Actually I don't believe I am being unreasonable. But wanted to bring it to attention.

MN seems to be a quiet on this today but I think the fight should still go on. I can't link to it as I am so not tech savvy enough but it is on change.org. (Same person whk set up the Sheffield Weds one so of you sogned that one it is pretty easy to locate).Already has over 9000 signatures so please please please continue to sign and share!

Please, everyone, lay off his website - it is probably one of those which is booby-trapped to count every visitor as a supporter. So don't go there.

I understand why his mother and sister are supporting him - he's their kin - but can anyone explain why his gf and her father have not shown him the door?

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 04/01/2015 19:33

I thought he says he is innocent, which would exp!ain why he hasn't apologised I suppose.

I'm not on his side or anything, but the man does have to earn a living somebody, and his particular skill is football.

What would people say to a convicted electrician being employed by SWALEC or similar?

Idontseeanysontarans · 04/01/2015 19:33

Andrew I can only imagine that it's money related.

LineRunner · 04/01/2015 19:37

But he's not an electrician, is he?

GoddessWhoWalksEarthAsWoman · 04/01/2015 19:38

Lynette I've signed it because I don't want my daughter growing up in a society where it's ok for convicted rapists to hold high profile positions.

Andrewofgg · 04/01/2015 19:42

Idontsee Her father is rich in his own right. She won't go without if she never sees this apology for a man again.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 04/01/2015 19:43

The petition here needs 15,000 signatures.

Why??

What happens when 15,000 wise and wonderful people sign it????

LynetteScavo · 04/01/2015 19:44

Well, my thoughts are that if he was a carpenter, and had served time for a crime people wouldn't be signing petitions.

Or is it because he has a highly paid job, or because he will be playing for a club they support, or because he is famous and has supporters, which mean his victim is suffering from attacks from others?

Idontseeanysontarans · 04/01/2015 19:45

I didn't know that Andrew, god knows then, love is obviously blind and stupid...

The problem as I see it is that sports personalities can be heroes to young people. The last thing we need is for rapists to become heroes. The last thing my daughters need is that.

I'm going to sign this, and write an email to Oldam Althletic and all of the sponsors listed on this page: link telling them that I will not use their products, and will advise everyone I know or can contact via FB, twitter etc to also avoid their products if they sign this man.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 04/01/2015 19:54

Could this be good news for common decency???

petition update

timtam23 · 04/01/2015 20:05

Signed.

AWholeLottaNosy · 04/01/2015 20:10

Fairy, that's bloody brilliant!

AuntieStella · 04/01/2015 20:12

Fairy's petition update is to a DM article (for those who might not want to give them the clicks)

And it's already out of date. I've just looked at the petition and it has 14,029 signatories.

AuntieStella · 04/01/2015 20:19

And it's gone up by another 200 since I posted that!

cricketballs · 04/01/2015 20:24

I know I'm going to be flamed, but as a couple of other posters have said if he was an electrician, brick layer, accountant etc there would not be a petition stopping him gaining employment following a prison sentence (whether or not he pleaded innocence for this crime) for rape. His trade is as a footballer so therefore he will want to continue in this field

LineRunner · 04/01/2015 20:28

He can be a worker if he likes.

But as a convicted rapist, who has shown no remorse, whose victim has been cruelly hounded, he in my opinion has no place as a high profile role model in British or international sport or culture.

SuburbanRhonda · 04/01/2015 20:28

Have a look at posts upthread, cricket, for reasons why people object to him returning to a high-profile sport like professional football.

You're welcome.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 04/01/2015 20:30

The figures on the petition are going up every second - in fairness we can't expect DM to keep 100% unto date with figures that are so fluid.

The point is the public are expressing their outrage and that has to mean something to Oldham.

elfycat · 04/01/2015 20:31

If he was an electrician or a brick layer or an accountant he would not be in the public eye.

If he were a nurse, or a doctor or a teacher he would be looking for other employment about now.

So your point is convicted rapists should be allowed to return to their original skill set. The DBS services says 'No'.

So do I.

cricketballs · 04/01/2015 20:37

He's been out of the game for so long, he would realistically be sub at the most which no one wants to hero worship; these petitions are giving him a higher profile.

I have read previous posts/news/opinions but it doesn't change the fact he has served his sentence (protesting his innocence is not a reason for denying him employment)

MinnieM1 · 04/01/2015 20:37

He's done his time, he needs to work now, leave the boy be!
People would be kicking up a right old stink if he signed on wouldn't they, so let him earn a living!
Honestly what was the point in him going to prison to serve his time if he's still going to be punished when he gets out?!
