Actually I don't believe I am being unreasonable. But wanted to bring it to attention.

MN seems to be a quiet on this today but I think the fight should still go on. I can't link to it as I am so not tech savvy enough but it is on change.org. (Same person whk set up the Sheffield Weds one so of you sogned that one it is pretty easy to locate).Already has over 9000 signatures so please please please continue to sign and share!

I agree with you, Andrew- I was horrified at the racist attack thug getting back into the game, but iirc, it was quite a few years ago now and before we could access social media to protest as vehemently and effectively. Also (I like to think) we are less tolerant now as a society of rich players being able to do whatever they damn well please and still be feted as kings among men. To a certain extent, of course, the behaviour of the players themselves has contributed to the public feeling quite sickened- there was a time before about 2006 when I doubt the term 'spit roast' was common parlance. We've had a big economic downturn since then too, of course, and I don't think people are quite as ready as they used to be to overlook the vastly inflated wages in football, at least not without holding those who receive them to some kind of standard, and not exclusively on the pitch. In that way, I think ones have started to change a bit.

BOFster · 06/01/2015 19:11

I think things have started to change- excuse autocorrect typo.

ILovePud · 06/01/2015 19:18

I agree with the social media thing BOFster, I'd hope that a successful campaign to prevent Evans' being signed by another club would help rather than detract from other cases as it would set a precedent.

YonicSleighdriver · 06/01/2015 19:18

SportsDirect is probably worth more because it is a £2bn turnover company in thrall to its majority holder and CEO, Mike Ashley.

Sub-brands are:
Sporting and fashion brands owned include Donnay, Slazenger, Dunlop (in most markets), Everlast, Kangol, Karrimor and Lonsdale.
Other retailers owned by the company include USC and Lillywhites.

LineRunner · 06/01/2015 19:20

Do they not realise that a lot of the buying power rests with parents?

iamtheeggman · 06/01/2015 19:20

andrew - it's his official site the AG is looking at ie chedevans.com, which is definitely "his" - see below from the site:

The official Ched Evans website
This website is the only official representation for Ched and the content is managed by his friends and family. The majority of information contained on this site is already in the public domain, the evidence, having been given in an open Court of Law. Where information is referred to that was not admitted in evidence at the trial, the individuals providing the information gave sworn signed statements to the defence solicitors acting on behalf of Ched Evans during the trial and the appeal process. The only other dialogue is on Ched’s Facebook site.

YonicSleighdriver · 06/01/2015 19:21

The article says is this one, Andrew.

The attorney general's office could order the chedevans.com website to be taken down.

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 06/01/2015 19:22

Sports Direct feel so strongly about wanting CE to be given a football contract that they will remove their sponsorship if he is not?

That's an incredibly strong stance Confused

PuffinsAreFictitious · 06/01/2015 19:22

One positive thing I hope will come out this is that football will have to take a long sober look at itself and decide whether it wants to be associated with men who have committed serious crimes.

YonicSleighdriver · 06/01/2015 19:23

Omni, I don't think they've said that, clam was hypothesising.

LineRunner · 06/01/2015 19:25

Sports Direct look dreadful over all this already imho.

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 06/01/2015 19:26

Ah OK

iamtheeggman · 06/01/2015 19:26

SD have said nothing so far. They are by far the most powerful sponsor in this, being a national retail business.

clam · 06/01/2015 19:27

No, that was me surmising! I haven't read that SportsDirect have actually said that!

LineRunner · 06/01/2015 19:28

I do feel that there is a lot of the wrong kind of posturing going on now.

LineRunner · 06/01/2015 19:30

Sorry, I mean posturing in a way like freudian upthread said - the football big boys will show what's what, and the women better get back in their place.

Quite chilling.

clam · 06/01/2015 19:34

I did actually read a comment on one of the online newspaper articles today, where a bloke said that the only people objecting to this were those who ought to get back to washing pots and that they (we?) had "no right" to be commenting on such things.

It would be funny if it weren't so shocking that there really are people out there who think like this.

BOFster · 06/01/2015 19:34

I definitely think there's an element of "Why should we be pushed around by s bunch of stroppy women who probably don't even like football?" Which apart from being a shitty misogynistic attitude, misses the point that plenty of men don't want rapists on the pitch, and that mothers who do a lot of buying of kits etc are entitled to hold a view about who their kids are given as heroes.

ilovesooty · 06/01/2015 19:39

I'm female, passionate about football and don't think Evans should be signed by any club.

ilovesooty · 06/01/2015 19:40

And my male, passionate about football colleague thinks Evans has no place in football too.

LineRunner · 06/01/2015 19:40

Women control a lot of the buying of the football kit, run kids round to football matches, and wow even talk to their families about shit like Ched Evans and his fucking web site.

Women have economic and cultural agency.

Andrewofgg · 06/01/2015 19:46

egg and yonic Thank you and I stand corrected.

ilovesooty · 06/01/2015 19:59

There are now over 58000 signatures and there is another petition calling for the FA to put in place automatic sanctions against those convicted of crimes of sexual violence.

BOFster · 06/01/2015 20:03

Sky News are saying that the Board are going to meet again tomorrow as they have been unable to reach a decision.
