It seems we are not allowed to speak about anything negative elsewhere. Please do not speak badly of Tricky Dicky and co.

You weren't just referring to the private group, you specifically mentioned threads on Mumsnet.

Willferrellisactuallykindahot · 04/01/2015 20:58

Lol at the message from Lee and Katie!

So the money is to cover living expenses and clothes etc then? It's just not clear at all! And how will they be able to make a 'personal' donation to rmh if they are so skint? What a crock of shite.

Still, at least they said thanks in this message.

aermingers · 04/01/2015 20:59

It sounds to me like Lee and Katie may be putting a stop to things...

IAmOnMyBike · 04/01/2015 21:03

Read the GoGet site they say they want people to keep giving them money, if that is what they want to do.

I really hope so.

Okay they didn't ask for tickets on the Gravy Train but they've traveled quite a long way on it so far. Time to get off and let the charity take a ride instead.

AndreaDislikesScammers · 04/01/2015 21:10

On a side note, I really hope this is sorted out soon so I can have a name change. I'm sure my sense of self-inflated annoyance looks big in this one ...

don't flame me for my insensitivity, it's a light-hearted remark

I've just read GetFunding and they are asking people explicitly to donate to RMF now. I think they've done the right thing. They have plenty to cover their costs there now. The thing is they are now saying that it was to enable them to keep the family together - which may well be all Katie and Lee ever intended to do. But I wish Richard had been upfront about that in the first place, he would probably have saved them a great deal of embarrassment and kept public sympathy.

IAmOnMyBike · 04/01/2015 21:13

They must have edited it, or I misread it.

Well that proves I was wrong about not being able to update the primary information tab! Shame the fundraiser didn't do that instead of the 'sidebar' update.

Glad they are now saying this. Hopefully anything over and above what they collected after that announcement will be paid direct to RMH by the fundraiser and not included in the 'pot'.

AndreaDislikesScammers · 04/01/2015 21:22

Iam

It's a long way down the announcement but they say:

"So from now on we ask if you still wish to donate to us, kindly donatedirectly to the Ronald Macdonald Foundation at www.rmhc.org

Please remember guys we understand that you may feel you want to help us, but by helping them you are helping us. We live here now and take each day as it comes. With this in mind please please help us to help them help others that need support just like we did. We are so lucky to have you all"

Nerf · 04/01/2015 21:26

Andrea I was replying to nutsinwinter about FB - she/he explained why people moved over and I replied wrt to closed v public. You don't need to direct your dectivising (not a real word but I like it) at me, I'm not contradicting myself.

AndreaDislikesScammers · 04/01/2015 21:30

Not wishing to flog a dead/dying horse ....

If anyone here had any doubt that people were still under the impression they were donating to medical costs, here's the proof. yes he says 'keep the money' but that's not the point - many others donating may not have felt the same. And this is why people were uncomfortable about the situation. Posted today, long after the update was finally made and probably via a media link:

"# Michaels saidPosted on 01:10 PM

Here is £10 for baby Dax and family. If insurers pay, then save this for baby Dax. I don't want any refund. Good luck to you all"

"Andrea I was replying to nutsinwinter about FB"

This is why clarity is the key otherwise there is confusion - as evidenced with this fundraiser Wink

GraysAnalogy · 04/01/2015 21:50

You know what I'm getting annoyed now.

I asked numerous times on that page for clarity regarding a number of issues. This was AFTER I donated and wanted to know what exactly my money was going to!

After that I received abusive and racist messages as well as being banned from the page completely - despite me giving a substantial amount.

I almost wanted a refund - but I forgot, Richard likes to name, shame and threaten those who do.

So people harping on about leave them to it and all that malarky - no. Ive got every right to question what the money I donated in good faith is going to. I have every right to call out abusive and racist bullies.

ScotsWhaHae · 04/01/2015 21:51

No accountability whatsoever.

The McCanns set the bar pretty high when it comes to getting people to fund you.

vindscreenviper · 04/01/2015 21:51

Local BBC news report about social media backlash here.

That is disgusting quite honestly. Report the abuse and racist remarks to the Police.

I can fully understand why you wouldn't want to ask for a refund after the utter vitriol the other person got. Sounds like you have had enough abuse already.

iamtheeggman · 04/01/2015 22:01

Well the latest update seems to show that it is all done now. I'm sure baby Dax will do really well (and that, of course, is the really important thing). Lee and Katie will get to keep their £11,500 and claim all of their living expenses on insurance in the meantime. And Ronald McDonald house will get their donation of – and this is my guess – maybe 50 quid. I imagine we will hear very little publicly about what happens to the money, let alone baby Dax. I reiterate that I really hope he does well. I'm sure he will. Good night all.

LilMissSunshine9 · 04/01/2015 22:03

People might say why are people setting up pages on FB but look at what it has actually achieved those people kept asking legitimate questions in from what I have seen polite manner and it has now led to any further money being donated directly to a worthwhile charity. That in itself is to be congratulated. Since the majority of the concerns seem to be about lack of transparency regarding the costs and now we have this new update the concerns are addressed and that is the end of the matter.

MaidOfStars · 04/01/2015 22:05

Andrea Glad they are now saying this

They are saying exactly the same thing as always, packaged up differently.

  1. They don't know how much money they will need, nor will they declare for what.
  2. This undisclosed sum will come from the donated pot.
  3. Anything extra will be given to RMCH.
aermingers · 04/01/2015 22:26

I have to say I think this is a reasonably good outcome for all concerned. Dax's parents have enough money to enable them both to stay with him in America until he's ready to go home. But a reasonable amount and not silly amounts above and beyond what they needed.

I do think some of the online pressure has served a good purpose though. Richard appeared to be determined to raise absolutely huge massive amounts of money which were far in excess of what were needed and his intentions in doing so were never really clear. I have a feeling that had the online pressure not happened then there genuinely could have been a situation where an awful lot of people were fleeced with the intention of enriching people rather than helping them in a time of need.

I think it was the right call to end it where they did and it was a sound judgement, I don't begrudge them using the amount they've raised already in order to stay in the US with Dax. I have to say I take a pretty dim view of Richard Crow's role in the whole saga though.

Did you donate via PayPal or credit card as could you dispute it with them directly saying you have been mislead into believing what orgins of donation was for. Am sure someone could send you screenshots of the continuous changes that have been made
