It seems we are not allowed to speak about anything negative elsewhere. Please do not speak badly of Tricky Dicky and co.

IMO it's a bit misleading to say that nobody is feeling exploited. First of all, you don't know that. Obviously someone did, or they wouldn't have asked for a refund. And after the way that particular person was treated, I can fully understand why nobody else asked. If you need a demonstration of bullying, that was a classic.

I think at this point, as the parents and the employer are not going to call a halt to this, it will likely end up undergoing further scrutiny on Monday once more official channels are brought in.

crumblebumblebee · 04/01/2015 18:00

Why are so many MNers getting their knickers in a twist about where people choose to give their money?! Asking for funds for living expenses are very common in the US when a person has a seriously ill child. People don't query if the parents have an iPad or wear Juicy Couture, they help...if they want to.

LongDistanceLove · 04/01/2015 18:01

For me personally, if it was not rushed and the fundraisers were clear and honest from the start, there wouldn't be much scrutiny. People ask for donations to fund their weddings, honeymoons and holidays, but they are clear and honest from the start.

In this instance, the backtracking, lies, deleting and abusing of people asking legitimate questions, raises doubt.

It's pretty obvious this guy was trying to do a nice thing for his friend, but he's done it in a ham fisted, don't think about the consequences, if you don't agree with me you are a cunt kind of way. And I can't agree with it.

He needs to get help to sort it out, and become completely transparent with how much has been raised, and exactly where this money is going. And not change his mind, backtrack, and abuse people with legitimate questions.

AliceinWinterWonderland · 04/01/2015 18:02

You're saying people don't question it in the US?? They most certainly do! I've seen it happen loads of times.

Tyzer85 · 04/01/2015 18:05

I don't get why people are getting so wound up over a couple and their premature baby receiving donations.

The whole thing reeks of jealousy, especially when people assume that everyone who has donated is poor or misinformed etc.

Get a grip.

AndreaDislikesScammers · 04/01/2015 18:08

Nerf

What about the people who donated via the news reports thinking it was for medical bills and have never even seen the Facebook page? Many of the news reports just linked direct to the fundraising page which was still stating it was for medical costs many hours after they knew the costs were being covered. There is nothing in the update stating that refunds will be made to those who donated solely on the basis they thought they were helping with that particular bill.

Many of the comments make it clear people thought they were helping the couple in that respect. Americans saying they were ashamed of the way the couple had been treated by their system. Excuse me? A statement from the hospital makes it clear they went out if their way to help them (no doubt due to the media frenzy). They provided them with cheap/free accommodation (with food provided) and say they have facilitated contact with their families back in the UK. Direct contradiction to the 'scared to turn on their phones' and 'no wifi' buggery bollocks that the fundraiser was claiming.

crumblebumblebee · 04/01/2015 18:10

Alice Well, you don't have to donate, do you?! It's optional, no gun to your head.

bloodyteenagers · 04/01/2015 18:12

A lot of people who have donated have said themselves they don't have much to give, single parents, oap's, families with children in hospital etc. no one is assuming anything.

AndreaDislikesScammers · 04/01/2015 18:16

" Well, you don't have to donate, do you?! It's optional, no gun to your head."

Missing the point or what!

Yes it's optional and people can give their money to a multi-millionaire to fund his new yacht as long as it is made clear that's what they are donating to.

if it was made clear from the start that the funds would be covering lost income, bills etc. then this thread wouldn't even fecking exist!

crumblebumblebee · 04/01/2015 18:43

I am not missing the point. Hmm At this point in time, it is crystal clear that the money is NOT going towards medical bills.

Nerf · 04/01/2015 18:48

If I chose to donate in the grounds that there was a news story saying the insurance might not pay out, that would be my look out wouldn't it? I'm sorry all the annoying little 'huns' won't listen and keep spending their child benefit (as alleged by your group) on this family, must be really annoying that you all know so much better.

MaidOfStars · 04/01/2015 18:51

Argh, I want to be approved for the closed group.....

AndreaDislikesScammers · 04/01/2015 18:53

crumbel

I'm not talking about "this point in time" I'm talking about when they were fundraising giving the impression it was for medical bills. Big difference as I've already explained.

Nerf

My group?

wt actual f are you talking about? I already said I wasn't even a member of the TD group. Keep up.

AliceinWinterWonderland · 04/01/2015 18:58

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm not a member of the TD group either.

Operating on the "there is none so blind.." theory, however, I will not be engaging further on this thread. Those who get it, get it. Those who don't, choose not to. I think it'll be down to the appropriate authorities to sort it all out anyway.

Calling the police is pretty dramatic Fab
Expressing your opinion on Mumsnet, less so.

Can I be Sharon if this is an Eastenders episode? She gets all the best storylines Grin

IAmOnMyBike · 04/01/2015 19:25

The police have already had a report made to them.

crumblebumblebee at this point it is not crystal clear that the money is not going towards living expenses in New York, which are insured to exactly the same extent as medical bills.

AndreaDislikesScammers · 04/01/2015 19:37

Damn! My moment of soap opera, dramatic glory snatched away from under my nose.

weeps into next week's script

Ubik1 · 04/01/2015 19:46

So you are trying to save 'the Huns' from themselves?

WineWineWine · 04/01/2015 19:51

If they had set up a page to let people know that their baby had arrived early but was doing OK in hospital and their insurance would be covering most of their expenses and all their medical bills. That they had accommodation with RM and had done lots of shopping so were fine for clothes and their flights home were sorted. They had all the baby stuff they needed back home.
I wonder how many people would have sent money.

iamtheeggman · 04/01/2015 19:54

No one is saving anyone from anything.

If someone was shaking a poppy tin
In your local High street, and then going to the pub to spend the money, you would be outraged.

If the big issue seller next to him was going home every night to a comfortable three-bedroom semi, you would also be outraged.

How is this different? Money that is being raised to cover costs (medical and NY living expenses) that are already insured will instead be spent on nappies, a pram and God knows what else.

Ubik1 · 04/01/2015 19:59

The difference is that The Royal British Legion and The Big Issue are registered charities.
