They've Just stuck two names together and do some minimal looking packaging to fool people.
The quality isn't good and still people think it's posh. It's not!
It's in most supermarkets.
Who can guess which brand I'm talking about?

Yes! That's exactly it IlkleyMoor

There's a brilliant Christmas Men Behaving Badly episode where Gary and Tony buy each other all sorts if weird and wonderful crap, and then Deb and Dorothy open their presents and they've bought each other exactly the same boring basket of toiletries and they just glance at it once and dump it in the side.

Sums it up perfectly.

voluptuagoodshag · 05/01/2015 13:25

Crabtree and Evelyn exists because that was the poshest sounding Anglified names the American marketing company could think of at the time Wink

I buy whatever handwash is on sale in the supermarket. I prefer Carex translucent blue one as everyone knows that blue soap kills more germs than normal soap because it is blue. In the way that red pills will make you better quicker. Fact.

YoullLikeItNotaLot · 05/01/2015 13:37

Grin @ pta blues

While Lush is being mentioned I want to say I've just started using one of their shampoo bars and I can't remember my hair ever being this shiny and "clean" feeling.

I also picked up a tiny pot of skin tint stuff (i got the price wrong - I wouldn't have paid £12 for it but I'm glad I did) and it is lovely - my skin looks fab with it.

I can't believe this thread has over 200 messages in it. It's about soap people. Some people might buy B&H because it's nicely packaged and looks nice (irrespective of where you can buy it and also disregarding that MB and JM and Lush et all are more expensive) and it will make a nice gift. Soap, hand lotions etc were regular Christmas gifts in the past just as socks and gloves and scarves and hats were. They will remain gifts now and into the future.
It isn't posh it's functional.

I wonder whether someone who would buy B&H products would buy "GOSH" or "Wet & Wild" or "MUA" cosmetics? They are cheaper versions of well known brands and are just as good as their known counterparts.

It's not just about soap though is it? It's a discussion about branding and marketing and psychology - it's a very high value subject. We could discuss paint, chocolate, baked beans, gin or a hundred other household items in exactly the same way.

Paint - is Farrow and Ball better quality than Dulux, or do some people just think it is because it is more expensive. Can you tell it apart if you don't know which is which. Is it worth the extra cost? Same for Montezumas vs Aldi chocolate, small batch naice gin vs Gordons, value beans vs heinz etc etc etc. People write entire books, form companies, and do degrees in this sort of thing.

Sometimes people will think something is nicer, if they think it is more expensive. - this is common with wine - tell someone the wine cost 30 a bottle and they will think it is better than 3.99 plonk. I

I'm sure someone will have done a test somewhere where three virtually identical items have been compared and if people were told that one item cost 1, one cost 10 and one cost 50, some would have been convinced that the expensive item was better quality.

Slightly off topic but I bought a big bottle of method washing up liquid and when it ran out I've topped up with cheapo stuff:)

LoveVintage · 05/01/2015 21:30

You are absolutely right Ilkley, though l am quite happy with a glass of £3.99 plonk.

fromparistoberlin73 · 05/01/2015 22:24

I second the farrow and ball question

It's almost £ 50 a tin ! If you got the same exact colour from that paint wall chart would it make a difference

Sympathies to the many BH gift recipients !!!!

NorbertDentressangle · 06/01/2015 13:59

I thought of this thread today when I was shopping and saw this brand of hand wash .....another "pretend to be posh" one.

To think a lot of people are fooled by this brand
YoullLikeItNotaLot · 06/01/2015 14:02

Ooof that's very blatant isn't it? Even sounds the same.

Seriously though, is it only a problem when "cheap" brands do this? M&S have been at it for years!

I think it does make a difference actually. I've only used it once but there is just something lovely about the finish.

FallenAngel22 · 06/01/2015 14:50

Not sure if it's already been mentioned but beauticology is another! Philosophy copy and smells awful. Boots had a pile of it unsold today in the sale.

squoosh · 06/01/2015 14:54

I also think Farrow & Ball is worth the money. Trickier to paint with (hence why people say their painter decorators doesn't recommend it) but gives a lovely finish that you just don't get with Dulux.

thegreylady · 06/01/2015 15:06

I ask for Molton Brown shower/gel or shampoo for Christmas and birthdays because I really like it. If I run out I use Dove until I can get to a MB discount shop.
