To think it's odd to give other people's children advent calendar?

I know this is a first world problem. My 3yo (just 3) has received advent calendars from both the neighbours and my mil. I have already got one too. Whilst obviously these are kind gifts, aibu to think that it's a bit of a strange gift. I don't really want my son to have multiple pieces of chocolate every day for the whole of December. But what am I meant to do with the calendars?!

Donate to a food bank.

Save them for next year?
Send them to a women's refuge/shelter where kids may be who might not get one?
Food bank? Bit odd but chocolates chocolate
Take the chocolate out n save it for treats ?

Keep one for you and donate the others or pass on. It's sweet and no harm is meant by it.

Yeah I wouldn't dream of getting someone's child an advent calendar.

YANBU, it's weird. Either the parents want one (in which case they've probably already got one), or they don't (in which case nobody else should).

Possibly the grandparents could say in mid November "Can we get little Johnny his advent calendar this year?" But that didn't happen this year.

My children don't have an advent calendar, much less a chocolate one.We have an advent candle and an advent book instead. [smug] [lentils]

I'm with you on this one. In previous years my in laws and parents have bought the DCs Advent calendars, as have we (DH & I). Three is ridiculous. I haven't bought them one this year which makes me a bit sad because they're my kids and it's my job to buy things like this but hey ho, it's me who doesn't want them to have so many.

My mum did this, only she's got a personalised one for DS, with his name piped onto the chocolate. I haven't even seen her for her to give it to us, so I just don't understand the point.

DS has ASD so no way am I going to introduce a second advent calendar part-way through the month.

I can't donate the personalised one, or I would. I can't donate the one I've bought because DS chose it himself before my mum told me she'd bought one. It makes me all 'Argh!' because I feel like I should be grateful, but I'm not because it causes unnecessary stress.

Mine have 3 each - one each that they bought themselves with their pocket money, one each from their step-sister and one each from my brother and sister in law. There would have been some from my parents as well - but we managed to stop them in time. The extra chocolate is really not a problem with a two parents hovering nearby each morning

It is a bit odd, but doesn't have to be a big deal.

You can either donate the excess if possible, or melt down all the chocolates to make cakes

Why on earth is it odd? And why should parents be the only ones to buy them?

Nothing at all wrong with giving your child an advent calendar, it's entirely up to you what you do with it.

Yes! I got flamed last year for saying it but I think it's weird!!

Yes it's lovely that people think of them etc but they only need 1 and it's a nice thing for the parents to get/child to chose themselves.

That was before all the advent calendar food bank hype but if it happens this year I'll donate them. Some of them came half way through the month ffs!

I was mildly irritated because my mil sent ones to the DCs and I'd already got them one each so I wish she'd told me she was going to. But I think it's more to do with my issues with mil than about the Advent calendars.

Give them away if you don't want them.

It's weird, they only need one advent calendar at Xmas it's like turning up to a birthday party with a cake. Unless prearranged it's clear the parents will have done it.
And surely the whole point of the advent calendar is they only get one and have to wait until the next day to open another window, not move onto the next one.

God forbid someone's nice to your kid. Someone should really go round there and give that kind woman a word. Giving your child an advent calendar at advent! How very dare she! Anyone might think Christmas was about being kind to your fellow person. Who does she think she is?
