To not have allowed a workman to use my loo?

Poppyhat · 12/11/2014 14:40

Sorry ,I know this has been asked before but I've forgotten what the answers were .
A rep for a company was here measuring up in the living room , took about 10 mns .
He then asked if it would be ok if he used the loo.
I said sorry but there was a load of kids upstairs playing so I would have to say no .
I am not normally so rude ,but I just wasn't comfortable with him going upstairs when all the kids were there .wibu?

I never understand these threads. I would never refuse someone the use of my loo.

What on earth did You think he was going to do Op?

Nanny0gg · 12/11/2014 15:05

Is that really so weird? I didn't think it was.

I do. If you were that worried about the children (and to be honest, with 3 under 4s I'd be more worried about the bloke!) you could have gone upstairs to see what they were up to.

And he wasn't a workman as such, he was a rep who probably had to go to lots of other houses so no opportunity to find a loo.

Never heard the like of it!

StealthPotato · 12/11/2014 15:05

I bet he went outside and pissed on your flowers instead.

(much better than stealing / abusing the children)

Sheitgeist · 12/11/2014 15:05

Not this again! YABVVVU
... and rude.

I hate this "assume all unaccompanied men are paedophiles" crap.

youareallbonkers · 12/11/2014 15:06

Perhaps the end of the sentence was ...because I'd left them unattended for hours and didn't want people to know.

Thebodynowchillingsothere · 12/11/2014 15:06

Do workman have special working men's type poo? Or pee?

Clutch those pearls

BitchesGetStuffDone · 12/11/2014 15:07

Only on mumsnet are people told they are being unreasonable for not letting strangers upstairs to use their loo.

Maybe if the guy had been there for hours I could perhaps understand it but he was only there 10 minutes! Presumably wherever he works has a bathroom he could use! If not then there always coffee shops or fastfood places dotted around with toilets for public use.

Pipbin · 12/11/2014 15:09

Newsflash Not all men are out to abuse children!

Why didn't you just take him upstairs to the toilet then go into the room where the children were playing until he came out.

And as for the people who won't let workmen use their toilets at all, I do hope someone does the same for you one day. How would you feel if someone refused to let you use the toilet in their house?

Pagwatch · 12/11/2014 15:10

No, not only on mumsnet.
I don't know anyone who would say 'no, you can't use my loo' in real life. And if I did I wouldn't like them because they'd be a cunt.

ACheesePuff · 12/11/2014 15:11

Weird.

How do you get work done on tour house if workmen can't be left unaccompanied?

We are having work done on our house and they have been here all day every day for the last 2 weeks. Where else would they pee except in our toilet? And where else is my child expected to go if the workmen can't be let near them? It's impossible to have them in sight 100% of the time.

OhReallyDear · 12/11/2014 15:11

Wow. Of course you were Unreasonable (and paranoid, precious, rude and not smart).

That poor man.

KitKat1985 · 12/11/2014 15:12

YABVU. Poor bloke. You practically insinuated he was a paedophile. Not to mention he is probably on the road all day so doesn't have easy access to many toilets. Could you really not have just let him use the loo and check on the kids whilst he was up there if you were that paranoid worried? I'd be far more concerned about the young children up there unsupervised to be honest.

Godcreatedcricket · 12/11/2014 15:12

Mind you, our loo has never been the same again after 18 months of workmen urinating and defecating in it. A full English everyday dosen't exactly produce the most pleasant poo...

Smartleatherbag · 12/11/2014 15:12

Good lord, of course you wbu op! That is very rude.

Pipbin · 12/11/2014 15:12

Only on mumsnet are people told they are being unreasonable for not letting strangers upstairs to use their loo.

No - only on Mumsnet do people not let other people use their loos.

Winterbells · 12/11/2014 15:12

"How would you feel if someone refused to let you use the toilet in their house?"

If I was working in their house for 10 minutes I would not even ask!

Thurlow · 12/11/2014 15:12

I don't know anyone who would say 'no, you can't use my loo' in real life. And if I did I wouldn't like them because they'd be a cunt. Grin

I cannot for the life of me understand why the majority of people have an issue with someone using their loo.

There aren't loads of public loos out there. They'd probably have to pay £3 for a lukewarm coffee they don't even want in order to use a cafe loo. They might be out visiting clients all day.

I also can't for the life of me understand why, in this position, the OP couldn't have wandered upstairs to point the man in the direction of the bathroom and then stuck her head into the children's room to chat to them for a few minutes.

Canshopwillshop · 12/11/2014 15:12

I think you were unreasonable and paranoid. Poor bloke. If he's out and about all day where is he going to be able to use the loo? He may have only been 10 mins at your house but maybe he had been desparate to go before then. You could easily have escorted him upstairs to show him where the bathroom was and then gone in to see the children what he was upstairs.

mousemates · 12/11/2014 15:13

Bitches Not necessarily, no. DH is a builder so doesn't have a specific 'place' where he works- he's on different sites week to week. If he's lucky they have a portable loo but most often not. If he's then sent off to go measure up someone's house for, say, an extension, he'll ask them if he's okay to use their toilet because he hasn't been near one all day.

Places like Starbucks and McDonalds get very sniffy about a crowd of big dirty men in hulking jack boots and muddy fluorescent jackets tramping in and out all day for a piddle. There can be up to 50 workers on a site so it's not necessarily the case of one or two popping in a couple of times.

StealthPotato · 12/11/2014 15:13

thebodynowchillingsothere To be fair my DH is a 'workman' / tradesman / insert other label here and sometimes I wish I could give him his own outdoor loo.

Nothing to do with what he does for a living, he's just a bloke with bloke toilet habits. Grin

Canshopwillshop · 12/11/2014 15:13

Whilst not what!

Pipbin · 12/11/2014 15:16

If I was working in their house for 10 minutes I would not even ask!

Why not? Everyone pees and poos. Therefore everyone needs to use toilets.

Legionofboom · 12/11/2014 15:16

I really can't imagine actually saying no to someone who was already in my house and asked to use the loo. I keep trying to imagine it and I sound like a twat.

and if you were so worried then I agree with Pipbin

Why didn't you just take him upstairs to the toilet then go into the room where the children were playing until he came out.

HearMyRoar · 12/11/2014 15:16

I have never considered that it would be anything other then awfully rude to refuse in this situation.

Surely if you were really concerned about the kids you could have simply shown him up the stairs to were the toilet is, chatted to the kids for a bit and then shown him out the front door again.

fourwoodenchairs · 12/11/2014 15:16

You are unreasonable and cruel.
