To not have allowed a workman to use my loo?

Poppyhat · 12/11/2014 14:40

Sorry ,I know this has been asked before but I've forgotten what the answers were .
A rep for a company was here measuring up in the living room , took about 10 mns .
He then asked if it would be ok if he used the loo.
I said sorry but there was a load of kids upstairs playing so I would have to say no .
I am not normally so rude ,but I just wasn't comfortable with him going upstairs when all the kids were there .wibu?

Why are these threads always about workmen? Why not "my accountant came to discuss my tax return. AIBU to tell him he can't use my toilet". " AIBU to tell HM the Queen to wait until she gets back to Buckingham Palace"?

I wouldn't let some stranger knocking on the door use the toilet because they could be a burglar, but someone working in my house can use the toilet. These threads are weird.

Poppyhat · 12/11/2014 16:17

Insulted him ? because you he jumped to the conclusion that I assumed he was a peadophile?

ATeaPleaseBob · 12/11/2014 16:20

Very unreasonable.

I hope he peed in your garden on the way out.

BeCool · 12/11/2014 16:20

I'd be pretty insulted if anyone said no you can't use my toilet. Just for the reason that they would feel OK denying me a basic human function, for any reason at all.

I would be insulted, and perplexed.

Pagwatch · 12/11/2014 16:20

Hmm, its dificult as they are both so unreasonable that i want one to be worse than the other but I have to say it really is both equally
Unreasonable to say no
Unreasonable to cite unattended children within a 10meter radius as the reason.

youareallbonkers · 12/11/2014 16:22

why else would the children upstairs be an issue if not because you thought he was going to molest them?

Pagwatch · 12/11/2014 16:22

Yes GoodArvo

"George Clooney and brad Pitt were filming in the street and asked if they could use my loo
Good god no! I shuddered.
There were children upstairs!"

Mammanat222 · 12/11/2014 16:22

My OH is a "workman" (decorator) so I am immediately biased, some of the horror stories he has told me over the years have really annoyed me [think a month long job on a massive house, the customer refused to a) let OH and his 3 colleagues use their loo or b) allow them to hire a porter-loo to be put somewhere discreetly at the back of the property Shock]

I can understand that the guy wasn't there all day but even the fact he was 10 minutes from his office doesn't mean that he wasn't heading off somewhere an hour away? Or he could have come from somewhere an hour away?

As I say I am biased and I always try to be very respectful of workmen, even I'd have thrown out the carpet cleaner piss taker though Grin

RiverTam · 12/11/2014 16:23

you told him that he couldn't use the toilet because there were DC upstairs. Obviously inference is that you didn't trust him around DC. Further obvious inference is that you think he can't be trusted around DC. And you're surprised that he was a bit put out by that? Holy cow.

And how very dare he get on with the job quietly, instead of chit-chatting with you. Very unprofessional Hmm.

Poor guy! Some people really have to go quickly, maybe he has prostate troubles, and as for saying the kids are up there, the poor poor man. He must have been mortified.

How RUDE not to let someone use the loo. It's so Hyacinth Bucket.

Worst. Manners. Ever.

mousemates · 12/11/2014 16:25

Good I totally agree with you. My DH was working at some horrible snooty woman's house once for about two weeks and wasn't offered one cup of tea or glass of water in the whole time.

During the two weeks, she had her financial advisor around twice and happily got the percolator out for him.

Horrible bitch.

notfromstepford · 12/11/2014 16:25

When the neo-natal nurse used to come and visit DS when he was very tiny, she used to come straight in and ask to use the loo. She said it was because she was going from house to house all day and there were some houses you just didn't want to use the loo or have a cuppa. So in that instance it was quite a compliment that she would use the loo and have a cuppa!

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 12/11/2014 16:28

Good point Arvo. Would you expect an accountant to be more
‘civilised’ in the toilet department than a manual worker? Would it make a difference if any of these tradespeople/visitors were female?

Making assumptions, you might assume that a woman would be less likely to make a mess in the toilet, but she would be more likely to judge if the toilet is not spotless?

I’ll admit to hesitating when a female colleague asked me to use my toilet when she picked me up from home recently because I knew it hadn’t been cleaned recently and definitely did not meet the mumsnet standard.

Obviously I said yes, but warned her it less than perfect. I have never been to her house, so do not know her cleaning standards but she said that it was fine and lifes too short to be constantly scrubbing the loo.

BlueberryWafer · 12/11/2014 16:28

Both. You were unreasonable to not let him use your loo, and were unreasonable for making him feel like you thought he was a threat to your children. If you are comfortable enough for him to be in your house doing a measuring job you should be comfortable enough for him to take a piss in your lol.

What did you think, realistically, was going to happen while he was up there out of interest? Run around your landing with his dick out inviting the children to come take a look? If it bothered you that much you could have just gone upstairs with. "Yes, certainly, I'm off up to check on the kids anyway so I can show you the way".

KoalaDownUnder · 12/11/2014 16:29

I don't understand the thing about the children. At all.

You keep going on about the fact that there were 'children running about' up there. So what?

The only possible implication is that he might do something to them on his way past to the loo. Otherwise it makes no sense to use it as an excuse. Confused

If that is what you meant, can you not see how it's a stunningly rude and horrible thing to imply about someone to his face?

If that's not what you meant, could you please enlighten us??

Poppyhat · 12/11/2014 16:29

Incase anyone is just speed reading through and have missed some points ,
I do allow workmen use my loo ,
I am even hospitable to them .
Not this one ,
And the fact that I didn't feel comfortable with him is significant to me ,as it not the way I would normally be.
He wasn't a guest ,he was here to do a job .
I don't always treat guests and workmen in the same way .
Sometimes guests get offered a glass of wine and put their feet up ,then get climbed all over by half naked toddlers .
Workmen/accountant /doctors/charity door knockers etc don't .
But I will now try to remember the mn mantra ...No is a complete sentence .... And use it when I don't feel like letting anyone upstairs to the loo .

Blimey.

I hope the neonatal nurse was reporting these sub-standard houses she would deign to have a cup of tea / take a piss in?

BlueberryWafer · 12/11/2014 16:30

Use your loo, not your lol.

Mammanat222 · 12/11/2014 16:31

*wouldn't deign to have a cup of tea / take a piss in

AdamLambsbreath · 12/11/2014 16:31

I am a 'workman'. I am also female, middle class and boast a hairless arse.

Am I fit to use my customers' loos?

Oh the confusion.

PS The answer is yes, by the way. To the OP and the above question. And would remain so even if I was male, working class and hairy arsed.

RiverTam · 12/11/2014 16:35

can I ask why on earth you're asking if you were being U when you are so very very certain you weren't? You just sound more and more horrible the more you post!

BlueberryWafer · 12/11/2014 16:36

Poppy if you're not willing to admit you've been incredibly unreasonable, then why the heck have you posted in AIBU?!

CheerfulYank · 12/11/2014 16:37
Shock

I have never heard of anyone refusing to let someone use their bathroom! Seriously?!

I hate letting people use mine because it's mid-remodel and an absolute bombsite of plaster and laundry piles, but it wouldn't occur to me to say no.

Lweji · 12/11/2014 16:38

YWBU.

You trust him to be in your house measuring up stuff, but not in your loo?

For all you knew he could suffer from urinary incontinence.

martinisdry · 12/11/2014 16:38

Incase anyone is just speed reading through and have missed some points

Nice. If anything, those points just make it odder that you didn't let this man use the loo.

Your question was really "WIBU to have a funny feeling about this workman and therefore not extend him the same courtesy I would to anyone else?"
