When did they start with all the merchandising ?

I really think its gone down hill the last few years and I hated the one with the child who looked really sinister, the freaky snowmen silently moving about, and last years really grated on me.
Hate this years - its so bloody dull.
Loved the dog out in the snow one- but loads of people complained.
