Last years bear and hare left me cold, but this years penguin one had me sobbing. I may be hormonal.

ColdTeaAgain · 06/11/2014 11:31

Was thinking oh this is a poor effort John Lewis this year. Then then penguins turned into cuddly toys. Welled up like a right tit.

Damn you JL!

SicilianOlives · 06/11/2014 11:32

I cried when I saw the price of the stuffed penguin they are selling in store.

MirandaWest · 06/11/2014 11:32

I watched it and cried.

I am now crying again reading this thread. I didn't really get overwhelmed by last years one but this one makes me much too over emotional. I think it's probably because DS and DD both have very special teddy bears and as they're 9 and nearly 11 now they won't stay as special for much longer and it makes me want to keep them just how they are for a bit longer. Like things when DS asked me to knit a sleeping bag for his bear when they went to Beaver camp together.

And at the end the penguin is all scruffy and loved and

I may need to get me a Monty the Penguin....

OwlCapone · 06/11/2014 11:32

But the penguin isn't a pet - it's a toy.

I know that - but you're telling me a child is going to get that?

Well, the stuffed toy at the end is a bit of a giveaway.

MirandaWest · 06/11/2014 11:34

For the boy the penguin is real. He undoubtably knows his penguin is a soft toy but it doesn't stop him being real. Like in the Velveteen Rabbit where only toys who have been properly loved are real.

I will have to watch it later with DS and DD and see whether they indulge my emotional state or whether they tell me I am daft Grin

WorraLiberty · 06/11/2014 11:36

I think they do do that, actually. They don't notice how small the portions are for the free school lunch then

Grin Grin

KatoPotato · 06/11/2014 11:37

miranda! a knitted sleeping bag!

MirandaWest · 06/11/2014 11:38

I could get a mug in a tin

Medium Monty

Although not a huge one as that is £95 Shock

fourwoodenchairs · 06/11/2014 11:38

It's ok, previous have been better.

WorraLiberty · 06/11/2014 11:39

Btw, where's the Mumsnet outrage at such a young boy travelling on a bus in the dark, with just his imaginary penguin for company?

IsabellaPong · 06/11/2014 11:39

His mum is on the seat next to them Grin

Purplehonesty · 06/11/2014 11:39

It's so lovely. I wonder how many little Children will want a penguin toy his year!
Such clever marketing and yet I sobbed when I watched it!

MirandaWest · 06/11/2014 11:40

Just to really pull at your heart strings, KatoPotato he liked stroking his bear's tail and so I had to knit the sleeping bag with a specially constructed hole so bear could be in the sleeping bag and tail was available Smile

WorraLiberty · 06/11/2014 11:41

Was that his Mum sitting across the aisle Isabella? Shock Grin

In that case, she should have seen to it that the imaginary penguin didn't hog its own seat Hmm

turn360 · 06/11/2014 11:41

how nice

he bought a girl for his mate

and of course she is willing right away

hideous

GerundTheBehemoth · 06/11/2014 11:41

That's it - uncanny valley of the penguins! Thank you TillHammer Smile

WorraLiberty · 06/11/2014 11:43

Penguin prostitution

That's what's wrong with this country

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 06/11/2014 11:53

For research purposes I've just watched all the JL ads since 2011. The boy with the present is definitely the best.

I'm off to get a life now.

AllThatGlistens · 06/11/2014 11:54

I sat through it with this face Hmm until the end when you saw the toys!

Sweet but I didn't well up.

AesSedai · 06/11/2014 12:03

Of course turn360 - penguin prostitution at its best - brought to you all the way from the Antarctic. *(How do you know the main penguin is male - or did you just assume?)

TillHammerZeit · 06/11/2014 12:04

I hated the advert with the boy and his present. When I first saw it, I honestly thought it was an advert for the NsPCC or Barnardos or similar. The boy looked miserable, and the parents seemed to be ignoring him,or irritated with him throughout.
I was expecting a message along the lines of 'The best gift you can give your children this Christmas,is your time/attention. And was very surprised when it turned out to be a John Lewis advert.

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 06/11/2014 12:08

Aes It's called Monty.

OwlCapone · 06/11/2014 12:11

he bought a girl for his mate

How do you know the mate is female?

ArcheryAnnie · 06/11/2014 12:11

And the trafficked penguin is called Mabel. But those names might just indicate their gender expression, not their gender or their sex, you bigots!
