to be really angry at Benefits House:Me and My 26 Kids

Discopanda · 12/10/2014 21:58

Is anybody else watching this on 5*? It's mainly focused on the bloke with 26 kids by 10 mums who is demanding a bigger house paid for by the government, most of his kids are old enough to work but only one does. His main complaint is that the benefits cap means they can't buy a playstation! I kind of understand the single mum who needs a bigger house, but there's another family with 8 kids, neither of them working but both drinking and smoking! AIBU to be absolutely reeling that the government makes it so easy for some people! I'm self-employed because we don't qualify for 15 hours of childcare yet and my other half has been doing 60+ hours a week recently to support us!

Looks like the programme worked its magic on you. It may be worth pondering the extent to which the people featured are representative of benefit claimants generally (clue: the answer is not at all).

ilovesooty · 12/10/2014 22:02

Well it obviously had the desired effect...

This sort of thing is unusual but highlighting it just gets people frothing.

TheBogQueen · 12/10/2014 22:03

Don't watch this shit

Then you won't get angry

gamerchick · 12/10/2014 22:03

They must be doing something exceptionally large and painful to the welfare system soon if they're pulling this propaganda put of the bag.

Makes me feel quite ill Sad

SaucyJack · 12/10/2014 22:05

Why don't you jack your job in and have eight kids if it's such an easy life?

Behoove · 12/10/2014 22:06

Yanu to be angry. They are leeches, but obviously these scroungers are the worst case scenario - makes good tv. Not representative of the majority though.

Smartiepants79 · 12/10/2014 22:06

Well I basically agree with you.
A lot of people will come along and it's been badly edited for shock value and this isn't in anyway representative of families ( even large ones ) who require benefits.
BUT these families do exist. Rare perhaps but still.
I realise that there are many possible scenarios where you could find yourself with a largish family and on benefits but WHY do people have children that they can in no way afford.
Both my husband and I work and bring in good wages. We are well off by many people's standards. We still wouldn't have a 3rd baby cos we couldn't really afford to provide for our family the way we want to.

ilovesooty · 12/10/2014 22:06

I think it was first screened on Channel 5 a couple of years ago.

Mumblepot26 · 12/10/2014 22:07

What the others said....

Discopanda · 12/10/2014 22:07

There was nothing else on the TV. Although it is an extreme, the amount of money that they're costing the system is going to have an effect on everybody.

Yanbu at all. We are allowed to have opinion on it!

LadyLuck10 · 12/10/2014 22:11

Yanbu. Tv editing can't change the fact he has 26 kids with 10 different women. That is far from normal.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 12/10/2014 22:12

It makes you angry, well no-one is forcing you to watch it.
They're quick to have programmes on about people on benefits, yet never have I saw a programme about tax evaders.
But ynbu. You feel what you feel.

raltheraffe · 12/10/2014 22:12

What annoys me about these programmes is the way in which they have chosen the most scummy scroungers to depict people on benefits.

I deal with people every day who are coming off JSA and ESA to work. They want to work and hate claiming benefits. There are a few lazy sods who turn up to my job interviews stating they do not want the job, just turned up to keep the dole happy, but these are a minority.

Both my husband and I claim DLA. I work 7 days a week and do not consider myself to be a scrounger. I feel I am entitled to that money and make no apologies for that.

Thanks to the scrotes on Benefits Street and this Benefits House show, people in receipt of benefits are being portrayed as lazy scumbags.

wooooosualsuspect · 12/10/2014 22:16

I bet you just loved getting angry, OP.

Give you a thrill did it? To watch the 'scum' on TV.

This

Behoove · 12/10/2014 22:17

Or maybe it's all about the ratings....

gamerchick · 12/10/2014 22:21

No it isn't, I noticed the pattern ages ago ... sting worthy welfare changes always follow some sort of froth inducing stuff.. programs, newspapers etc. It's to make us not care about what they do when they cause real pain to the most vulnerable.

It scares me somewhat tbh.

backbystealth · 12/10/2014 22:23

Sorry but anyone who allows their chains to be yanked by this kind of manipulative programme is a bit stupid.

Mintyy · 12/10/2014 22:23

Are you all saying that op doesn't realise there is a difference between the extreme scenarios featured on this show, and the vast majority of families who need benefits?

Discopanda · 12/10/2014 22:26

There is a huge difference between having some help from the government when you actually need it and relying on the state instead of making a real effort to get a job. If there is something really drastic on the way, it's going to be the vulnerable people in the country who get affected, not him!

gamerchick · 12/10/2014 22:27

I REALLY want to see an honest to god program on how much tax evaders and how much those in government cost the taxpayer to keep. On what they use their expenses credit card for compared to how much work they do.. their day to day lives.

Every time the spotlight points up towards corruption... its pointed straight back down on the scum with a little extra thrown in. It's easy to stamp on the heads of the people we see every day so their job is easy taking the heat off.

And as usual people suck it up.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/10/2014 22:27

"There was nothing else on the tv"

Downton, Our Girl, Homeland?

Are you fucking serious? I'd rather masturbate with a cuckoo than watch that shit.

Ffs

The channel 5 family is owned by Viacom (and American media company) What makes you think they have any say in what channel 5 or 5* put out?

No, 26 children is clearly not representative, but as teh programme showed these families do exist.
I think the replies on this thread perhaps show a split between tax payers and benefit claimants.

wooooosualsuspect · 12/10/2014 22:30

Really, Minnie?

Which one am I?
