Dd2 has been unwell for 3plus weeks.various symptoms including fatigue, sleeping all day, erratic blood sugars (shes diabetic), looks pale, memory issues, headache sore throat tummy ache and backache
Saw gp three timea this week and they couldnt find the cause.she was so sleepy and had very sore eyes yest so we went to a and e today.
They were absolutely fucking hateful to us.dismissed our worries and laughed in my face when I said I was worried dd may be anaemic
They looked in her throat said it was fine and declared she looked well to them when they have not seen her over the last three weeks ill and this week in particular.
I asked about a full blood count and they got agressive saying I was asking for a blood test for my own reassurance and proceeded to talk about bleeding a child and sticking a needle in dd just to reassure me it was horrendous.
Dd has to have procedures done reg due to her other problems and they were terrifying her and being rude and dismissing us.
Im so worried about dd and now so angry and upset.she isnt right and nobody will take it seriously

Take her back to A&E. Sit there, for as long as it takes, and refuse to leave until they investigate more thoroughly.

CulturalBear · 10/10/2014 16:35

I'm surprised they haven't done a blood test already tbh. Three weeks is s along time to be that poorly at any age.

Could you get some back up from your daughter's diabetic nurse/specialist?

Stratter5 · 10/10/2014 16:37

Complain. Forcefully complain.

I had a similar experience with DD2 and whooping cough, the Dr we saw at A&E was hateful; rude, dismissive, didn't listen to either DD2, who was 15yo at the time, or me. We complained, the hospital took it far more seriously than I was expecting, we had an official meeting with the Dr, and other relevant staff.

The Dr admitted he'd been wrong and rude, and DD2 received a letter of apology which she treasures as she loves a good grudge.

Drs should always listen to pare us. We know our children best of all, and can often spot small clues that wouldn't be otherwise noticeable.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 10/10/2014 16:38

Type 1 I assume, as she's a child? Could she also be coeliac? There is an increased risk - if you any autoimmune condition, that you will develop another.

I think you need to see another Dr, the way you have been dismissed is not on!

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 16:38

We did insist we were there from 8am till 3pm they argued with us andeventually said they would do it but it was going to be out as for my reassurance and that ds was well
After what they had said dd was screaming and fighting they got the blood test stuff but we couldnt keep her still and they wouldnt help as said it was against their better judgement anyway so in the end it couldnt be done due to them petrifying dd

Do you have another A&E nearby? Or not much further? Or a Children's A&E?

A friend got similar treatment to you and went to another place (about 10 miles away) where she was taken seriously and her child was diagnosed, admitted and treated very quickly for a very serious condition. Not necessarily the case for you of course Thanks

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 16:40

Ive phoned her diabetes team who have said they will do fbc coeliac and thyroid test next week but they have emailes the play spec as ob now dd is terrified of blood tests
Im justvworried that something is wrong that needs treating now and im worried

Or you could try a walk-in?

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 16:43

Sorry its hard to type as on my phone and its not working as well as computer at home.
I cant believe they laughed at me for suggesting anaemia it was awful.

Gileswithachainsaw · 10/10/2014 16:43

Oh god what absolute arse holes your poor dd.

Complain to anyone and everyone that's disgraceful treatment. Sad

PandaNot · 10/10/2014 16:44

This isn't really what a and e is for though is it? I understand you're worried but the blood tests are something your gp should be doing.

HexBramble · 10/10/2014 16:44

YANBU.
Get yourself to a different A&E.
I've had 3 different medics tell me over last 5 years that a Mothers instinct needs to be followed.

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 16:44

Im just going to wait till next week as theyvwill do her tests then but im going to be on edge till they are done as shes just not right

RawCoconutMacaroon · 10/10/2014 16:45

It's great that the diabetics team is on the ball... It must be a very worrying time. You know your DD best, keep a close watch and take her back to A&E if you think that's needed. Don't let their poor attitude put you off.

whois · 10/10/2014 16:45

:-( sorry hedgehog. Hope you get somewhere with finding out what's wring with DD

Stratter5 · 10/10/2014 16:45

I can't believe they treated a diabetic child, and her mother, with such distain; no wonder you're fuming.

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 16:46

We have seen the gp three timesvthis week and they said to go they cant do blood tests at the gps

OP posts:
periperisun · 10/10/2014 16:46

Have you been there much, hedgehog?

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 16:48

Nobody can see anything wrong withher at gp or today at a and e but she has been so ill. I dont know if its related to the diabetes or a completely sep problem but they were dismissive and not willing to investigate at all

OP posts:
Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 16:50

Dd has never been to this particular a and e before but ds2 has with utis in the past.

OP posts:
wanttosqueezeyou · 10/10/2014 16:53

Where is your nearest paediatric A&E?

ithoughtofitfirst · 10/10/2014 16:53

That's infuriating. As if you don't know your own child. Absolutely hate being laughed off as well there's nothing worse when you're really worried.

I agree with a pp about going to a&e to try and see an out of hours. Maybe a different person will be more sympathetic cause this doctor sounds like they're being pretty unhelpful.

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 16:59

We have her blood tests arranged for next week and have decided at the slightest hint of her being any worse before then we will go back to a and e.a lot of anxious days and sleepless nights ahead I think

How old is your DD? The hospital staff sound horrible, and there's no excuse for that, but having doctor friends who work in A&E I'm a bit on the fence about this. It doesn't sound like an A&E issue, but on the other hang, if your GP won't listen Sad

deakymom · 10/10/2014 17:06

be careful what they put in your childs notes though i knew my 18 month old had a urine infection as did the nurse on the phone i went in the next day because she fell asleep while i was on the phone (first time for two days) so we let her sleep i got there he was nasty refused to look at her nappy (full of pus) said her temperature was normal he said she was fine it was a virus i insisted on a urine test he said no i refused to move he said fine printed off a sheet and put in my daughters notes i was suspected of having munchausen syndrome by proxy and needed close watching he didn't dip test the urine just sent it off

i struggled on for a couple of days eventually i had enough and rang the doctors complaining i had not had the results back she said oh she must be fine then hang on i will check and ring back she rang back with she needs antibiotics NOW! it took two lots of antibiotics to clear it was a very severe infection apparently the usual thing is to dip test first for indications of infection and if they are there give antibiotics the lab assumed this had been done and all they were doing is confirming it so no one thought to ring

i refused to take her to the doctors alone for the next five years
