Dd2 has been unwell for 3plus weeks.various symptoms including fatigue, sleeping all day, erratic blood sugars (shes diabetic), looks pale, memory issues, headache sore throat tummy ache and backache
Saw gp three timea this week and they couldnt find the cause.she was so sleepy and had very sore eyes yest so we went to a and e today.
They were absolutely fucking hateful to us.dismissed our worries and laughed in my face when I said I was worried dd may be anaemic
They looked in her throat said it was fine and declared she looked well to them when they have not seen her over the last three weeks ill and this week in particular.
I asked about a full blood count and they got agressive saying I was asking for a blood test for my own reassurance and proceeded to talk about bleeding a child and sticking a needle in dd just to reassure me it was horrendous.
Dd has to have procedures done reg due to her other problems and they were terrifying her and being rude and dismissing us.
Im so worried about dd and now so angry and upset.she isnt right and nobody will take it seriously

Good idea about the diabetes team...have you called them?

fillie · 10/10/2014 19:51

Apologies, can't see where op states child was unresponsive at a and e. A child being unresponsive is serious and I'm surprised they didn't admit her if she wasn't responding. Op, good luck in your search for answers for your dd, and soon she really sounds poorly.

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 19:52

The diabetes team have said they will do her bloods next week so I think its a case of us keeping a close eye on her, returning to a and e or ooh/gp if she worsens and hoping the bloods give us some answers next week.
The diabetes team spoke to the hospital this morning and actually told them it was inappropriate to try and say dds diabetes was causing her sleepiness etc and that they needed to test/treat her going by the history we had given rather than phoning them as it may not be anything diabetes related at all.

OP posts:
Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 19:54

Yes I had called the diabetes team when we got back earlier. It just seems a long time to wait when they could have done her bloods at hospital today.
Am I wrong in thinking you can check for anaemia with a finger prick type device or am I imagining that?

AnotherStitchInTime · 10/10/2014 19:56

She could have post-viral fatigue/chronic fatigue syndrome, some of her symptoms fit, here. I had a similar mix of symptoms after glandular fever.

They really do need to investigate thoroughly given her diabetes and the long duration of the symptoms. As someone else said there are other autoimmune conditions that can develop after an illness. My friend has lost part of her vision after a virus. Glad the diabetes team have got her booked in next week. If she gets worse than take her back to A&E. In the mean time can you offer fluids/nutrition in a more palatable/easily digestible form such as ice lollies for fluids and nutrient drinks/milkshakes/fruit and veg smoothies. She might be dehydrated and low on energy due to her loss of appetite.

plentyavino · 10/10/2014 19:57

They do a finger prick test before you give blood and I'm pretty sure it's to check for anemia.

Badvoc123 · 10/10/2014 20:00

It's a blood sugar test

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 20:03

It def wasn't a bg monitor or ketone monitor is all as dd has those it was before I had an op once I recall them doing a finger prick and telling me it was to check for anaemia.it was a few years ago though.

ipswichwitch · 10/10/2014 20:03

Like shit can you tell if someone's anaemic or not by looking at them. What an arrogant arse of a consultant! I would be complaint to PALS about her.

DS1 was only 10mo when he started refusing food, just screamed all the time, was pals but fairly active. 5 times the gp said there was nothing wrong. The HV took one look at him, rang the gp herself and said you need to examine him and do bloods. So I took him down and the gp still wouldn't believe there was anything wrong - even rang the paediatric ward to confirm he didn't need to do anything. Thankfully they said to bring him for bloods and he turned out to be so anaemic they seriously considered blood transfusion. It was only the fact he was as active as he was that made them manage it with oral meds. They couldn't believe the gp was so dismissive.
Is there a children's a&e near you because I'd be tempted to go there. Hope you manage to get some proper help.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 10/10/2014 20:04

Yes. They can finger prick to test for iron levels in blood - is done before giving blood

Pastperfect · 10/10/2014 20:05

I can't see where the OP said her DD was either non responsive or had been referred by the GP. If that was the case then of course you should go to A&E.

hedgehog I say this in the nicest possible way. You clearly need a lot if support and I get why you use MN, but your tendency to drip feed very relevant facts in AIBU do tend to mean your threads often end up in bun fights. Maybe AIBU is not the best location for them?

wanttosqueezeyou · 10/10/2014 20:20

Pastperfect, in the nicest possible way I'd like to suggest you RTFT.

hedgehog hope she's ok. Loads of good suggestions here and certainly no bunfight. Post wherever you like. I'm glad you've got the diabetes team involved.

SevenZarkSeven · 10/10/2014 20:24

I think you should complain about the hospital consultant / staff telling DD awful things about having blood taken / needles when they knew her medical conditon means a lot of bloods / needles just to make some kind of a point to you.

For the people saying you shouldn't have been in A&E and that was maybe why the people there were a little off - being a little off is one thing, scaring the shit out of a 4yo about having needles before you go to take blood and then holding her down etc is just so far out of line I don't even know where to put it.

My last post was meant to say I couldn't see in the OP where hedgehog had said her DD was unresponsive and the dr had referred them.

However my point stands: the fact that the OP had a dr referral completely changes the situation and was probably worth mentioned at the beginning not 15 odd posts in. But these threads are always like this.

And I still cannot see where the OP said her DC was unresponsive. Tired and sleepy is something else altogether.

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 21:07

I have just emailed off a very long formal complaint to the hospital stating very clearly what happened and how if anything happens to dd as a result of them not investigating her today I will take further action but in the meantime I want today's incident investigated so it never happens again to someone else. I'm fuming. Writing it all down in detail makes me realise just how horrendous it was.

OP posts:
MintyCatLeaf · 11/10/2014 02:46

As an ED doc, I am positively fuming on your behalf.

In my department, we would never, ever treat a parent, child or adult patient like that.

Badvoc123 · 11/10/2014 14:24

Glad,to hear it mint, but it happens, believe me :(

Badvoc123 · 11/10/2014 14:24

How is she today hedgehog?

phantomnamechanger · 11/10/2014 15:28

well done OP, you absolutely should complain.

I hope your DD is a little better today?

((hugs)) for you both

BustyCraphopper · 11/10/2014 15:35

It wasn't GL was it? I was accused of taking my child in for my own benefit on one of the many occasions I took her for breathing difficulties to be told "nothing to treat". On one occasion there they were so rude I didn't take her back for 4 more episodes of breathing difficulties, which I now regret :(

Edenviolet · 11/10/2014 15:59

Dd has eaten a little more today but her insulin requirements are staggeringly low which although its nice to see low numbers is odd as its not how things usually are.
She is still quite tired and I'm keeping a very close eye on her.

OP posts:
BustyCraphopper · 11/10/2014 16:16

Hope she gets better soon Smile

wanttosqueezeyou · 11/10/2014 20:58

My friend is too Minty and from the snippets she tells me, neither would she.

I hope she's on the mend hedgehog. Thanks

HexBramble · 12/10/2014 09:41

Hedgehog, I'm glad the letter is sent but am worried for your little girl. Only now catching up with thread. I'd be very tempted to show up at my GO/OOH's and state that something is categorically wrong with her and that you are being treated with contempt.

Stratter5 I'm horrified at one of your posts (am reading this all arse-backwards). The one re your sons
Impetigo and the "mother denies all knowledge" bit. Oh my god. It's like we're all automatically under suspicion.

FFS what's wrong with some people.

How did you get gold of the records Stratter5?
