Dd2 has been unwell for 3plus weeks.various symptoms including fatigue, sleeping all day, erratic blood sugars (shes diabetic), looks pale, memory issues, headache sore throat tummy ache and backache
Saw gp three timea this week and they couldnt find the cause.she was so sleepy and had very sore eyes yest so we went to a and e today.
They were absolutely fucking hateful to us.dismissed our worries and laughed in my face when I said I was worried dd may be anaemic
They looked in her throat said it was fine and declared she looked well to them when they have not seen her over the last three weeks ill and this week in particular.
I asked about a full blood count and they got agressive saying I was asking for a blood test for my own reassurance and proceeded to talk about bleeding a child and sticking a needle in dd just to reassure me it was horrendous.
Dd has to have procedures done reg due to her other problems and they were terrifying her and being rude and dismissing us.
Im so worried about dd and now so angry and upset.she isnt right and nobody will take it seriously

Thats dreadful
I fully exoect something in dds notes along the same lines as they kept shouting at me why did I want a well child to have a blood test and when I said she has been ill they kept saying she looks fine

This thread should be linked to in the main NHS thread.....

I had similar problems with my son, he was 18 months old. Tired, listless, no energy, sleepy, nauseous. I asked for blood test as I thought he could have iron deficient anemia. Doctor refused, saying I was heartless to suggest sticking needles in a small child. Hmm Eventually he got very sick in Poland, and my mother in law took her to see a pediatric doctor, who discovered he had severe iron deficient anemia. We got a full report to take to our GP. GP said, they dont seem to use the same values as us, so I will disregard this report. I insisted he send us for bloodtests, which came back showing that my son had depleted his iron reserves. He turned out to be unable to stomach ferrum, so we had to build up his reserves through diet.

Good luck finding out what is wrong with your dd. It is so worrying when we cant work out what is wrong.

Pastperfect · 10/10/2014 17:20

The way they treated you was obviously appalling but this really isn't what A&E is for and I can understand why the staff would be frustrated with you using them to seek non emergency treatment.

plentyavino · 10/10/2014 17:21

Either take her to your GP or back to A&E, refuse to leave until you are taken seriously. You know her best and although you're not a doctor (presumably) you obviously have a mothers instinct.

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 17:22

I just couldnt believe the dr chose to terrify a small child about blood tests knowing she has other conditions that require a cannula change ev two day a sensor change ev seven days, blood tests in clinic visits for her other conditions etc it was just cruel and heartless and to look at her and laugh and say she def wasnt anaemic as her gums were too pink and eyes were red (she also has conjunctivitis) was awful.

I feel for you so much, it is frightening - and it is not your fault there is a gap in her care but this really isn't either an Accident or an Emergency so I would be having stern words with the GP. Good Luck!

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 17:24

But I went there on gps advice after three visits to gp this week and dd still ill with no obvious cause?
Dd has had worrying symptoms esp the memory problems and sleepiness and as she is diabetic I assumed a and e was the right place to go?

You should be able to get an out of hours Harmony appointment if you ring your GP OP.

The sleepy, sore eyes etc could be allergies- trees are pollinating at the moment so can be bad. The rest doesn't add with it though, they should do blood tests, check for glandular fever etc.

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 17:30

Her eyes are really bad red sore and thick green discharge we went to the chemist and got some drops

IamOldGregg · 10/10/2014 17:30

Oh I am sorry I missed that the GP told you to go to A and E! In that case they should have treated you far better. Did the GP ring and refer you?? Or just leave you to it.

Poor your DD.

Stratter5 · 10/10/2014 17:30

Yes, do check her notes. I discovered to my horror, that DD2 had 'burns on her leg, mother denies all knowledge', with a note to keep an eye on her. I'd actually taken her because she had impetigo. I knew she had impetigo, and guess what, the swan results I insisted on showed that she had impetigo.

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 17:31

Tje sleepiness and weakness has been her lying on sofa ev day and being carried to toilet etc its that bad so I cant believe them dismissing us how they did

If your GP practice is closed, phone nhs24, they will give you an appt at your local hospital (usually within 2-3 hrs of your call) and you don't have to wait in a&e.

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 17:32

Gp had referref us faxed a letter

my dd had anemia when she was 4 , she was really pale , sweaty under eyes if walking , lifeless , sleepy and her hair went really thin , your daughter probably had red eyes from conjunctivitis , after the iron medicine she was a different person , hope you get something sorted op soon.

fillie · 10/10/2014 17:40

I think the problem may be that they don't see it as an Accident or Emergency, they are generally very over stretched in my experience. They should not be rude or dismissive though.
It's possibly something for your GP to address, keep going to the GP, ask to be referred to the paediatrician.

wantstolickwilliamgraham · 10/10/2014 17:44

Hedgehog80 That sounds like conjunctivitis in the eyes. Kids are prone to it- adults too- if severely run down. Get some eye wash and cotton wool to bath and buy some over the counter drops for her. You can get them from boots and superdrug. Are her eyes getting stuck together or are they worse in the mornings?

wantstolickwilliamgraham · 10/10/2014 17:45

Whoops saw you got some drops. Did you get normal hayfever or dry eyes or full on cloramphenicol?

Charitybelle · 10/10/2014 17:46

I agree its not an a&e issue but I think that its irrelevant. The op was obviously given advice to go, and the staff should have treated her with courtesy and respect regardless of whether she was given the wrong advice or nor by the GP. Its apparent that we have a gap in service provision between urgent care and everything else, but that's for another thread.

Personally, i would make a complaint about the treatment you received OP. Write it now whilst its fresh and you can remember names/comments verbatim. Submit to hospital PALs dept (if they still exist). At the least you deserve an apology, but more importantly it sounds like someone needs to address some serious staff training issues. I love the NHS, and appreciate the cazy pressure our health professionals are under but there's no excuse for what you describe. This is how stuff gets missed and tragedies happen.

Cake and Flowers for you. I hope it gets resolved for your ddd soon.

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 17:46

Its just since yest her eyes have been sore but was someghing else they dismissed.ive bathed them and started the drops she is very run down I think

OP posts:
wantstolickwilliamgraham · 10/10/2014 17:46

So longs as she's not allergic to penicillin that is

wantstolickwilliamgraham · 10/10/2014 17:48

Keep bathing them, especially morning and night. It's probably a side effect of whatever is making her so unwell. If she's good with you touching her eyes you could place a warm flannel over each closed one first to help ease the ache.

I'm disgusted that the GP didn't even bring up conjunctivitis- it's so bloody common.

Gileswithachainsaw · 10/10/2014 17:48

Surely being unresponsive is an a&e issue?

Edenviolet · 10/10/2014 17:50

Ive never seen dd like it before its been like every ounce of her energy has gone x
