Yy to sour speech. Salmond could do with a bit of humility and graciousness now. He needs to acknowledge that 55% of his countrymen didn't share his vision - he makes it sound like he only cares about the 45% who did.

I am genuinely sorry for those who are disappointed. I feel particularly sorry for those who were sold the promise of a silver bullet and who will feel genuinely bereft.

SirChenjin · 19/09/2014 06:27

RJnomore - thanks for the summary Smile. Pretty much as I expected from him.

Bear hugs for stats Grin

My DD is awake- time to get on with life!!!

Off to bed for me. Thank you all!

PhaedraIsMyName · 19/09/2014 06:29

MN done good. And if I were a politician of any party looking for a researcher/speech writer I'd hire StatisticallyChallenged

rootypig · 19/09/2014 06:30

But none of you is talking about this vote, this no vote, as the beginning of a momentous process. Salmond hasn't achieved independence but he has achieved some version of devo max and there is plenty of work to be done. His speech frames that. He cannot let Westminster off the hook.

EarthWindFire · 19/09/2014 06:30

Good night to those going for a sleep Thanks

StatisticallyChallenged · 19/09/2014 06:32

Rootypig, we've all said on previous threads that there is work to do afterwards if it's a no. Most of us have been up all night - can we have a few hours sleep before we go back to working on the future?

I'm responding directly to criticism of AS's speech. If you have time for that, you have time for the proper context.

TillHammerZeit · 19/09/2014 06:33

I'm very pleased with the result. I don't feel at all triumphant, just very relieved. I am however very proud of the county I live in,East Dunbartonshire, with 91% turnout, and 61% voting No.

RJnomore · 19/09/2014 06:34

Callmedave is due to make a "very significant statement"

Moira salmonds in for a long day.

StatisticallyChallenged · 19/09/2014 06:35

I made one comment right at the start of his speech that he wasn't being very gracious. But no, I won't be holding a substantial discussion right now

OP posts:
SirChenjin · 19/09/2014 06:37

Rooty - at the moment I'm just delighted that the Union is safe. What happens as we go forward is a matter for discussion between the Scottish Govt and WM, not just Alex Salmond.

Tinkerball · 19/09/2014 06:38

I'm gutted to. But will just get on Ruth things and hope these " promises" happen which I doubt. English Tory MPs aren't happy and it's not all going to be plain sailing for David Cameron now .

Tinkerball · 19/09/2014 06:38

Ruth?? With!

GrouchyKiwi · 19/09/2014 06:38

Jeremy Vine's graphics are hilarious.

AnnieGetYourTazer14 · 19/09/2014 06:39

Ditto - not triumphant, just very relieved
Well done to all you wonderful women who stayed the course and don't underestimate what influence you may have had.
Thanks

tadjennyp · 19/09/2014 06:39

Thank you stat for fantastic threads and all the posters who have spent so much time explaining why they felt as they did. I am excited for the future! Sorry to all the yessers who will be the catalysts fore greater change but I am relieved we are still united. Night all. Thanks

rootypig · 19/09/2014 06:40

I'm not asking you to, SC. Try to imagine I'm not speaking only to you Grin

Sir I don't say it is. Merely that his speech is terribly important for peace keeping. He isn't saccharine, and nor is the mood in his camp. Response to his speech here is just daft.

GrouchyKiwi · 19/09/2014 06:42

This is a gracious speech.

cedricsneer · 19/09/2014 06:42

I don't want wm off the hook. I think you would be surprised at how many of us on these threads would've taken devo max. I know I would have. Stop generalising!

Spiritedwolf · 19/09/2014 06:45

The establishment, with all its might, has only just beaten him.

Or you could put it another way. 1.9 million people in Scotland did not think the case was made for independence and/or that the plans were not good enough.

My vote is not a 'deferred yes' denied to Salmond because of the British establishment. It is my vote, my opinion that Scotland is a fantastic country because of the union, not in spite of it.

There is a huge sense of entitlement in the Yes camp. Why can't you understand that ordinary people disagree with you about the right way forward for Scotland. Accept that 1.9 million people thought about their vote just as much as you. Respect it.

I respect yours and other Yes campaigners who must be absolutely gutted this morning. I hope we can work together to make Scotland a better place within the UK.

Direwolf · 19/09/2014 06:45

Words absolutely fail me this morning. I'm a highlander. Waiting for the result from them. If it's a yes that will at least be some tiny salvation. But I also feel ashamed to be scottish this morning. I hope to god the no voters have made the right vote. Time will tell.

EarthWindFire · 19/09/2014 06:46

AD is giving a well balanced speech.

Give us a little time rooty it has been a very long night/weeks for us.
