To think you get "a side" in bed and that's that? There's no changing?

DH thinks that you can opt for either side.

Who is being unreasonable?

I'm a pretty poor sleeper anyway, so if I am going to sleep well (or at all actually) I have to have the right side of the bed. So anyone trying to trade sides at random would make me very unhappy. Fortunately, DH can sleep anywhere anytime and doesn't care at all which side of the bed he gets.

And even if I didn't need the right side of the bed, I wouldn't want DH's sweaty skinny pillows, and I wouldn't want to have to move my water bottle, medication, kindle etc around to the other side of the bed whenever he was overcome by the urge to swap sides. And my chest of drawers and wardrobe are on my side, and his are on his side. It would make no sense to play silly buggers and swap sides.

So your DH is wrong and very unreasonable.

SweetsForMySweet · 17/09/2014 23:55

I most sleep on the right/dh on left except when I'm pregnant in which case we swap so I can sleep on my left side as is recommended during pregnancy I hate it but do it anyway

morethanpotatoprints · 17/09/2014 23:55

I don't mind swapping but only if the sheets are clean Grin
We tend to keep one particular side for a while and then have a change for a while, then change again.
I think clean bedding is the biggest issue.

Rosecottage888 · 17/09/2014 23:57

We sleep one way at mine (me on left) and the opposite at his, never thought about it before! Suppose it's because I'm always closest to the door and he gets the wall Smile

MrsWinnibago · 18/09/2014 07:25

I asked this question because I always have the wall side and DH is jealous since we moved as my side is right by this big window so I have a nice breeze. HE thinks we should rotate! Shock

Grubber · 18/09/2014 07:38

Me - left side.
Him - Underbed storage.

Brightbutchilly · 18/09/2014 07:47

Interestingly I read something years ago that suggested that men often pick the side nearest the door as a kind of evolutionary throw back to when they had to protect the family. On considering this my DH and I realise that regardless of the sides we choose at home he always sleeps nearest the door in hotels, holiday cottages caravans etc.
at home we have'sides' and don't swap but if there was a 'preferable' side I wouldn't in principle have an objection to week about.

PiperRose · 18/09/2014 07:52

Up until 3 weeks ago (when I actually had a DP) I could happily sleep on any side. We mostly fell asleep where we landed after sex. Now I starfish in my own bed. After I've kicked the dog off.

LizzieMint · 18/09/2014 07:57

I hate having a side. I like to swap around, we've swapped a few times (usually when I've been pregnant) but h likes to be furthest from the door too. Which means I'm first line of defence when the children storm in. Envy
I've already said when we move house (shortly) that I'm being furthest from the door for a change.

GnomeDePlume · 18/09/2014 08:01

Change sides Shock

25 years of bed sharing and we have never changed. However, if staying alone in a hotel I sleep on the other side of the bed.

Sunna · 18/09/2014 08:05

I sleep nearest the door. Them's the rules.

Dh is U. The only 'side' dh and I agree to is he has the window side, whichever side that may be. Obviously at home our windows stay where they are. But when away dh sleeps nearest the window as he gets really hot.

WitchWay · 18/09/2014 08:17

I always sleep on the left (when lying on my back facing up), regardless of the door, window, whether DH is there etc

If I'm sharing with a girlfriend on a trip away, I feel really odd if I end up on the right Grin

batgirl1984 · 18/09/2014 08:17

I'm sure a comedian on telly did a bit a about this, although it would have been 3 years ago. Having both been happy with our 'side' Dh and I had to swap coz of the dealing with a breastfed baby thing. Occasionally we swap back to our 'real' places for a cuddle but have been in our 'wrong' places for 3 years. Just gotta get the no longer new baby night weaned...

eltsihT · 18/09/2014 08:22

When we moved house we decided to swap sides as it was more practical.

For a fortnight neither of us slept well, we were moaning we swapped back and slept perfectly.

It doesn't matter particularly where we sleep when we are away from home.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 18/09/2014 08:34

LTB!Grin

No swapping allowed. I sleep my side even though dh works away. It's just the law.

Musicaltheatremum · 18/09/2014 08:37

I still sleep on the right and always have. Even though my husband died 2 years ago I still sleep on the same side and the other side has magazines, books and pictures of him. And I do steal the Downie too.

IckleBird · 18/09/2014 08:51

Drives me mad as my dp does it regularly too on the basis that he hasnt been sleeping well on that side so I must swap with him.
Currently like being nearest to the door for dealing with wakeful dc4 rather than stumbling around the bed.

MTBMummy · 18/09/2014 08:51

Nope never swap, even if I go to a hotel on my own I sleep on my side.

So sorry for your loss Musical

Plateofcrumbs · 18/09/2014 09:42

I've heard that theory about men sleeping by door to protect his woman too. It has always worked out for us that DH takes door side wherever we live/stay.

Although with new baby have reluctantly swapped sides now to make night feeds easier although mostly sleeping in spare room with co sleeping baby

Ididntseeitsoitdidnthappen · 18/09/2014 09:46

We swap if one of us has a bad back because our sciatica affects opposite legs and we are both outwards sleepers

Otherwise no. His side is his side and I can't swap sides until we've had a change of sheets due to man grease on the sheet and pillowcase (I change sheets weekly but still...Bleugh)

chrome100 · 18/09/2014 09:49

We have sides in our own bed but DP has been away for a couple of weeks and I've started sleeping on his. I rather like it. He might have to fight me for it on his return.

cherrybombxo · 18/09/2014 09:50

Urgh, is he a farm animal? No? Then he sticks to his side! LTB! Wink

Christinecagney · 18/09/2014 09:51

No swapping at all. Ever.

Man nearest door for dealing with axe murderers.

Same as man puts rubbish in wheelie bin if after dark also because of axe murderers.

it's the law, innit?

Apart from these two rules I am a massive feminist!
