Welcome to indyref 6

Spidergirl8 asked close to end of last thread:

What impact would independence have on fiscal policy and economic stability
What impact would the ageing population have on the future
Is the predicted future a positive one, based on fact

If the bite goes no, what has actually been achieved? Does that not just put Scotland on the back foot?

Let's try and give not too biased answers please!

"Community halls standing room only."

Our local one tonight was crowded out the door. Huge queue so I have been told by DH who is attending. He was thirty minutes early as well...says it all.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2014 20:36

Of course they are creative types so obviously don't really understand what they are voting for.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2014 20:38

And Irvine "I live in Amsterdam" Welsh. Yes that persuades me

So the referendum eligibility rules also apply to commentators?

PhaedraIsMyName · 07/09/2014 20:40

I know this is ridiculous but seeing that King Creosote is a no has cheered me up no end. You're more than welcome to Ricky Ross and The Proclaimers.

Now I really want to know what Stuart Murdoch and Stevie Jackson think.

IrnBruTheNoo · 07/09/2014 20:40

Surely Irvine Welsh is entitled to express his opinion on the matter since he's Scottish?

PhaedraIsMyName · 07/09/2014 20:41

No the rules don't apply to commentators but why should I give any credence to people like Welsh and Connery pontificating?

I love King Creosote's recent From Scotland With Love album.

PhaedraIsMyName · 07/09/2014 20:43

I didn't say he can't but why should his view persuade me?

IrnBruTheNoo · 07/09/2014 20:44

Welsh's views don't persuade me either if it makes you feel any better though Phaedra, I just see it as another POV made by a celebrity. I was a Yes long before all these celebs started putting their tuppence worth in.

squoosh · 07/09/2014 20:46

Stuart Murdoch started as a No and is now a Yes. He wrote an article recently.

Ricky Ross has become so holier than thou on his referendum 'journey'. It's almost comedic.

deeedeee · 07/09/2014 20:49

I know what you mean stat, I could have swang for Bowie and Alsop, but this letter wasn't gathered by politicians, it was gathered by National Collective. It has been partly my involvement with National Collective that has inspired my determination to vote yes. The majority of the people signing it aren't celebrities, but they do make up a significant part of Scotland's creative and cultural sector.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2014 20:50

Itsall, there is a lot of very interesting stuff in the FT. You can sign up to the website for free and read quite a lot.

I know. I used to access it loads. Lots of good articles that helped to inform my view. Something seems to have changes in last couple of months though, maybe I will try signing up as you suggest.

Polonium · 07/09/2014 20:50

Do you think the publishers of the FT would forgive me cutting and pasting the entire article? Is infringement of copyright more important than the union?

How about it you google 'scots who dally with separatists invite a bitter divorce' ?

That might work?

Polonium · 07/09/2014 20:52

Rupert Murdoch would love it if the BBC was broken up.

deeedeee · 07/09/2014 20:56

polonium, thanks for that... ooh George Robertson or Irvine Welsh? good counter. and what a choice. Both total cunts!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2014 20:57

That did work! Thanks for the tip Thanks TBH though I prefer more data and analysis than opinion pieces like that. Thanks for the link though, it was good reinforcement Smile

I wish the Yes campaigners would get their heads out of the sand (or the clouds) and realise the economic realities of their vote. We are cushioned at the moment but' under independence there will be mass cuts across Scotland. So many of the policies are paid for at the moment as a way of buying votes. Once they have a yes, they will have to balance the books and there will be swingeing cuts. I can't link as it is behind a paywall but David Smith made interesting reading in today's Sunday Times. Might be able to cut and paste tomorrow when on a computer and not an iPad.

He's certainly stirring plenty on Twitter...

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/09/2014 21:00

Not a fan of him but interested in whether any Yes voters are concerned about the points he's made about the economic outlook of an iScotland? Or is it just more scare mongering pish in your opinion?

PlasticPinkFlamingo · 07/09/2014 21:04

x-posted - Rose I posted the article or a version of it as he linked to it on his blog.

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/09/2014 21:04

This is the David smith article Rose, I was about to link to it! www.economicsuk.com/blog/002045.html#more an interesting but very economic argument heavy opinion peace. I haven't fact checked it, but I do recognise a lot of the numbers in it as being correct
