Welcome to indyref 6

Spidergirl8 asked close to end of last thread:

What impact would independence have on fiscal policy and economic stability
What impact would the ageing population have on the future
Is the predicted future a positive one, based on fact

If the bite goes no, what has actually been achieved? Does that not just put Scotland on the back foot?

Let's try and give not too biased answers please!

Ahh sorry, I did skim back through the last few pages and couldn't spot anything. Apologies!

grovel · 07/09/2014 19:01

I'm rUK (SE England). I'm still undecided about the referendum but, if there is a break, I want it to be a clean break. So my MP will get an earful if there is any move towards currency union. I simply don't want any residual contingencies (or excuses for Scots to complain about rUK intransigence). If you go it alone, do it properly!

No worries - these threads move incredibly quickly and repetitively

How very dare anyone wave flags of the country the Tennis player at Wimbeldon is from. Shocking behaviour! Biscuit

Polonium, are you thinking of Wimbledon? Wink

Tbh, I do identify as Scottish more readily than British. But I have a Scottish accent, both parents are Scottish (though not all their parents were) and I tend to think of Britain as less of a 'country' and more a union of countries. For me, 'Britain' is too broad a church when it comes to personal conception of nationality. When I open my mouth, I'm clearly Scottish, not English, Welsh or Northern Irish.

I work with some students from Kurdistan who absolutely do not identify as Iraqi. On our records, they are listed as Iraqi and that's what their passports and visa say. They have no problems with Iraq (lots of Iraqi friends in their group) and put 'Iraqi' on their university applications etc but their own culture is so strong - they speak Kurdish, not Arabic, different food, traditional dress etc - that they identify as absolutely Kurdish, even if others don't agree.

wimbledon

frankie80 · 07/09/2014 19:32

I can't see a politician in front of them fannyfifer, think you may be missing the point.

PhaedraIsMyName · 07/09/2014 19:35

Those flag wavers weren't making a cheap political point unlike Salmond.

FannyFifer · 07/09/2014 19:37

I've seen Salmond at many sporting events waving a saltire, that's what a lot of Scots do when they are cheering on someone from Scotland.

frankie80 · 07/09/2014 19:40

but they don't admit to 'smuggling it in', do they? which says they knew it was wrong and knew exactly how it would be perceived.

FannyFifer · 07/09/2014 19:42

Loving all the Yes flags & badges at the Scotland game. Grin

deeedeee · 07/09/2014 19:48

Grovel, regarding currency union did you read crisyede's post?

"And if hostility to a currency union is based simply on public opinion then it seems that a lot of posters on this thread would feel that those actually making the decision should enter into a currency union anyway - because the short-term consequences of spooking the markets should trump all other considerations "

Would you oppose currency union even though it could cause economic wobbles for both counties if you do?

PhaedraIsMyName · 07/09/2014 19:48

Oh Salmond knew exactly what he was doing. And Wimbledon wasn't a Scotland game so that's a poor comparison.

I do! And I think the letter is great too.

Of course they are creative types so obviously don't really understand what they are voting for...Wink

Ahh that list - those were the 80's musicians of my youth Smile. They were cultural nationalists. Deacon Blue, Hue & Cry, The Proclaimers, Fairground Attraction and the poetry of Liz Lochead. They were of a political time, seems a long long time ago...

deeedeee · 07/09/2014 20:18

sorry its all goingtobefine :-)

Never! ShockWink

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2014 20:32

I think there is far more political activity now than for decades. Community halls standing room only. Street stalls every weekend. Concerts, plays, music, poetry. Ordinary folk getting out and going canvassing. Ordinary folk organising flash mobs in town centres. The hills have ayes movement (one of my personal favourites)...

Politics has never been less dead or more exciting!Grin

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/09/2014 20:33

Honestly, I wish celebrities/cultural figures/sportsmen would stop trying to influence people. In either direction. I find it immensely irritating. Sorry Deedee I know you've been involved with it so it's not a reflection on you personally but I think it's a reflection of a celebrity culture that politicians are spending time trying to get "big names" out to support them.

A bit like the prat on Radio 4 who said something about those in the arts having the imagination to see the vision of an independent Scotland which those not in that sector can't. This was in response to JK Rowling and Denise Mina supporting. His name escapes me.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2014 20:34

Excellent article in the FT.

Behind pay wall for meSad
