Welcome to indyref 6

Spidergirl8 asked close to end of last thread:

What impact would independence have on fiscal policy and economic stability
What impact would the ageing population have on the future
Is the predicted future a positive one, based on fact

If the bite goes no, what has actually been achieved? Does that not just put Scotland on the back foot?

Let's try and give not too biased answers please!

That's a great article Statistically Thanks

PhaedraIsMyName · 07/09/2014 21:05

Ross has spent his entire artistic career out of being holier than thou about something. Lorraine McIntosh always reminds me of Regine Chassaigne - women who wouldn't be allowed near a microphone if they weren't married to the bloke who runs the band. Petty I know but they are both deeply irritating.

Interesting and slightly worrying article plastic

"Every independent assessment of Scotland’s fiscal position points to the need for bigger spending cuts than the UK government’s austerity programme and tax hikes. “If an independent Scotland wanted to achieve a sustainable medium and long-term fiscal position, further tax increases and/or spending cuts would be needed after independence,” the IFS says.

triple x post going on, lots of minds thinking the same!

I just signed it to post the same article, but I see it's aleady been noticed. It's grim reading and I hope that deedee, wetherall, etc will read it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2014 21:15

The problem is, it is again an opinion piece and it makes assumptions which may or may not be correct. No-one really knows how things will be until after a Yes vote and negotiations are concluded.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2014 21:15

It is also worth noting that WM has barely started its cuts, and they will hurt.

CoreyTrevorLahey · 07/09/2014 21:17

'Mon Phaedra, poor old Lorraine did go it alone with some sterling performances in River Shitty! Wink

Another opinion piece I'm afraid, but it does have some numbers in itWink Would be interested to know what the economists think?

In fact this looks like an interesting site in general - plenty of reading!

Statistically, Wild et al. There is nothing you can say, no article or piece of research that you can link to that Itsall, weatherall etc will pay any attention to if it doesn't conform to their view. All they are really interested in is independence for its own sake.

I can't speak for the others but I read most of the links posted on here. I have read very widely, and additional articles add to that body of knowledge. I am very grateful for all of the links you post, they are useful, and they do help me form my views.

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/09/2014 21:28

Reading the BC article now ItsAll

Jesus himself could tell them that it will be a disaster, but they will take no notice whatsoever.

Well no, but I am an atheist.Grin

deeedeee · 07/09/2014 21:29

indeed lady c, all 51% and counting of us are complete dafties. Sorry! Either that or we disagree with you.

Interesting articles everyone, thank you. Good to know the worst case scenarios

Ok. Thanks. I found it laid things out really clearly (and made me worried as public sector cuts are the first thing on the table during a time of austerity). I worry about schools a lot, both as a teacher and a parent. I also feel that free tuition will go - Nicola Sturgeon left herself plenty of wriggle room while seeming to pledge to keep free tuition. In the tiny school I work in, cuts will mean not just teachers, but entire subjects as most departments are single teacher. I also think Salmond will want to strut on the world stage and that doesn't come cheap.

Polonium · 07/09/2014 21:36

deeedee - Classy language. Hmm

WildThong · 07/09/2014 21:36

Not 51% of the population though, 51% of the people surveyed. It was mentioned on the news that there may be some Yes groups registering for these polls in order to skew the results. I'm not saying that is true btw, don't know how these things work.

Polonium · 07/09/2014 21:38

Sterling fell about 1% today after news of the poll favouring separation.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2014 21:42

It was mentioned on the news that there may be some Yes groups registering for these polls in order to skew the results.

As far as I know the "proper" pollsters (ie not Mumsnet) only poll people who signed up with them before the whole referendum thing to avoid this - dodgy results make them look bad.

I'm going to leave you to your self congratulatory reading
Thanks! You enjoy yours too Smile

AnnieHoo · 07/09/2014 21:45

Even bleaker outlook for an Independent Scotland than I'd thought previously from David Smith there.

I'm depressed Hmm.

Politicians will say anything in the run up to voting day. People want to believe the warm fuzziness but in the cold light of day we will be stuck with Holyrood calibre politicians scrapping over where to cut next.

frankie80 · 07/09/2014 21:49

oh so you've got to sign up for the polls? I thought they just phoned people.

FannyFifer · 07/09/2014 21:53

Why do you really think sterling fell.

Bank of England will have to come out in favour of currency union to save the markets.

Sterling without Scotland's oil, Whisky etc to back it will go into free fall.
