Well?

firstchoice you seem to meet an unfortunate amount of bigots Sad Unfortunately you get ignorant numpties on both sides. Best to ignore. The vast majority of people do not see it as England vs Scotland.

StatisticallyChallenged · 04/09/2014 18:02

I thought it was very quiet - didn't realise thread 4 was full!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/09/2014 18:02

BOE = Bank of England where Scotland deposits GBP to the value of Scottish pounds printed.

Sallyingforth · 04/09/2014 18:04

OldLady you have the investment in BOE that currently backs your Scottish notes. I think you'll find that won't be sufficient to back a new tradeable currency. But by all means try - it will be fascinating to watch.

prettybird · 04/09/2014 18:04

Iirc, the SNP minority government tried to stop the Edinburgh trams project as it needed funds from the Scottish Government to continue - but was over-ruled Hmm - for those complaining about Edinburgh's maladministration

I'm happy to be corrected though - am on the iPod so difficult for me to check.

I too think that coalitions are a good thing - although I now almost have a preference for minority governments as at least you then try to get a consensus. One of the negatives about the Thatcher era was that the concept of consensus government seemed to take a hike: you might as well have an election and if a party wins a reasonable majority, send everyone else home for the next 7 years (Westminster) as everything will be passed anyway Hmm

Sallyingforth · 04/09/2014 18:05

crossed with the last, but my post stands.

Roseformeplease · 04/09/2014 18:05

Just back from school and more nonsense with the Curriculum for Excellence. Apparently, my children have to do 2hrs 55 minutes a week of "Health and Wellbeing" which is more time than they spend on either English or Maths or, indeed, any other subject. A friend who teaches Biology despairs because all examples of plants / animals etc have to be Scottish.

How is this preparing our children to go out into the world. I am astonished that it has not been more pilloried for the appalling bit of propaganda and social engineering that it is. Positively Orwellian.

Sorry. As you were. Interesting to find out, however, how many on here are unhappy with what is going on at their local secondary school. That is a full devolved policy and curriculum developed entirely by this administration.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/09/2014 18:07

Re the curriculum is there an online version somewhere?

Roseformeplease · 04/09/2014 18:07

Interestingly, this is spilling into classrooms as well. A lovely pupil, usually very quiet said to another, "I can't wait for the 18th and then the English can fuck off home". This was in front of my son in a school with no problems. My son is Scottish but I am English, as are a number of classmates. I will be reporting tomorrow and following up.

Roseformeplease · 04/09/2014 18:10

Try Education Scotland but the problem comes in the exams and methods of assessment for individual subjects and the huge list of things that have to be "experienced". Happy to answer questions by pm on my own subject (English) but only know about others from staff room chat and my own children.

I know that, in all subjects, if they fail an assessment they can have a chat with the teacher about the bits they got wrong and pass that way.

Rose my child has a list of daft topics as long as your arm. Then the advice is that we as parents need to practice sums a lot at home.Hmm

There isn't really a "curriculum" it's more of a ... the official word escapes me but an official did come up with something to describe it , maybe Rose can remember? But you make it up from school to school it seems to me.

WildThong · 04/09/2014 18:14

rose that is awful re the curriculum and the attitude of the child. Repeating what is heard at home perhaps? There can't be that many examples of Scottish plants and animals?

grovel · 04/09/2014 18:15

OldLadyKnowsSomething, thanks for your reply. I wasn't really referring to policy. It's all the nuanced stuff which goes with getting policy to happen.

A former Labour Defence Secretary once told me that Malcolm Rifkind (obviously a Tory) had invited him to lunch on his appointment. He said that Rifkind's advice on the relationship between the military, civil servants and politicians had saved him six months of faffing about trying to understand his Department.

Its not a curriculum - its a framework or something. I really like it, but then I'm not a school teacher :-)

Hopefully this time they can answer questions that we can hear the answers to, unlike their last televised debate which was impossible!

Indeed, I still want to know what additional powers are coming to Scotland with a No vote and how they plan to "guarantee" them...

BardarbungaBardarbing · 04/09/2014 18:18

I am telling my kids to SAY NOTHING!

WildThong · 04/09/2014 18:19

itsall perhaps the suggested additional powers should be listed in a white paper then we can all believe it without question Grin Wink

frankie80 · 04/09/2014 18:22

blimey 5 pages into thread 5 already.

Does it say anywhere how the 3rd debate will work? Will it be online or tv?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/09/2014 18:25

Just back from school and more nonsense with the Curriculum for Excellence. Apparently, my children have to do 2hrs 55 minutes a week of "Health and Wellbeing" which is more time than they spend on either English or Maths or, indeed, any other subject.

Isn't it just an idea that can be explored in many different subjects, or is it an actual standalone "subject" It must be pretty hard to put times on things as there is such much crossover...

A friend who teaches Biology despairs because all examples of plants / animals etc have to be Scottish.

I'm pretty sure that's not a requirement of the curriculum? Confused

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/09/2014 18:26

That's the problem isn't it. No one believes that anything everything a politician (of either side) says is guaranteed in any way at all.

IrnBruTheNoo · 04/09/2014 18:29

Watched Scotland Decides debate that was broadcast from Granite City last night. Nice to see Nicola having an answer ready each time the opposition tried to catch her out. She's too sharp! :)

frankie80 · 04/09/2014 18:29

ok its a webchat, I see that now, still confused about how it will work as we won't see them responding will we - unless there is a live video?

I'd like to see their body language.

The timing does suck though, as most of us are working.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/09/2014 18:30

I presume we'll be able to post questions beforehand as usual?

IrnBruTheNoo · 04/09/2014 18:31

Haven't got an issue with DC's education in Scotland. If you don't like it move away and get your children educated in a system that you do approve of. Simples.

I get mightily pissed off with people slating the Scottish education system. Really if you're not happy with it find another part of the UK to raise your DC, or another part of the globe.
