In EdinburghSmile

Yes I agree that the country seems to be 50/50 at the moment. There will be a national clenching of bum cheeks on the 18th/19th.

FannyFifer · 06/09/2014 19:07

Was that the mile of yes thing u were at in Edinburgh today?

Spidergirl8 · 06/09/2014 19:15

I'm an undecided and am finding it hard to get straight answers that aren't bias. My unanswered questions:

What impact would independence have on fiscal policy and economic stability
What impact would the ageing population have on the future
Is the predicted future a positive one, based on fact

If the bite goes no, what has actually been achieved? Does that not just put Scotland on the back foot?

Sorry if above already been discussed, I'm new to this thread.

Numanoid · 06/09/2014 19:20

This one was in Glasgow LovleyRitaMeterMaid, I wonder if it's a group of people who've unofficially taken it upon themselves to put stickers on people and just be generally annoying. Hmm

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/09/2014 19:22

Unfortunately none of those are questions you will receive a properly unbiased answer to. There are sources, counter sources, counter counter sources and shouts of bias. On phone just now but will post my take once on a laptop and able to link stuff.

Criseyde · 06/09/2014 19:27

Agree with Statistically - you are unlikely to get an unbiased answer here (or anywhere else) The best any of us can do is post you links to data (not op-ed journalism) and not offer our own speculative analysis.

Am also not able to link atm.

Perihelion · 06/09/2014 19:28

I had a very nice man from IPSOS MORI phone me last week. I only answered the land line because I thought it was my mum calling.

I wonder how/if the rise of mobile only households and people screening calls before picking up, have affected the pollsters.

PhaedraIsMyName · 06/09/2014 19:29

Well you won't get answers from the yes side as they don't know the answers. But don't worry it will all be fine.

Numanoid · 06/09/2014 19:32

What impact would independence have on fiscal policy and economic stability - I'm not an expert or extremely knowledgeable in this fields, but have been reading what I can. I think the following quote sums it up:

"...uncertainties over both future oil and gas revenues and over the continuation of the existing Barnett system make it difficult to predict with any great certainty whether Scotland would see a longer-term net fiscal gain or loss post-independence."

I don't think either side can say with certainty. Although I don't believe the economy would crash post-independence. This is a good, fairly balanced article from the Financial Times:

FT article

What impact would the ageing population have on the future
Is the predicted future a positive one, based on fact
- Again, no-one can say for sure. Yes supporters will tell you the future will be better post-independence, No voters will tell you it would be awful.

Although many seem to be planning to leave Scotland in the event of a Yes vote, there are equal amounts, like myself and DP, who will be moving abroad in the event of a No vote. Both could contribute to the problem of an ageing population.

My personal view is that a future involving Scotland being governed by its own citizens, and not including the possibility of a future Conservative/UKIP coalition, for example, is a good one. It can't be denied that the majority of the UK has suffered under WM, and a lot of people in rUK also want change.

If the bite goes no, what has actually been achieved? Does that not just put Scotland on the back foot? - I think it depends on who you ask, but yes, I think it would. It's unlikely we would get a chance to hold another referendum if we reject this opportunity.

BardarbungaBardarbing · 06/09/2014 19:33

Perihelion I had wondered about the polling methods.

Also a lot of newly registered voters and a high turnout all will add to the volatility, maybe?

I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it was a bad election for the pollsters.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 06/09/2014 19:33

No it wasn't part of the Mile of yes, slightly further out. It was two young (under 25 I'd say) guys. One was filming it, I'm a bit worried really don't want to be on you tube!

Numanoid · 06/09/2014 19:34

I took so long to post, but I can see other posters have said the same thing. We can only offer our own opinions and as many unbiased sources as possible. Although it is hard to find unbiased sources sometimes.

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/09/2014 19:35

Given that answers to spidersgirls questions are likely to involve proper information Grin and a fair amount of info should we maybe start the next thread now and leave this crappy one behind Wink - maybe start it with her qs?

Numanoid · 06/09/2014 19:37

If you do find yourself on Youtube (I don't think it's likely, I wouldn't worry!), just report the video - they can't keep it up if you don't consent to it.

Numanoid · 06/09/2014 19:38

Just saw your post Statistically, good idea, I can repost my answer laid out properly this time!

weatherall · 06/09/2014 19:38

So the conversation hasn't moved on much since I last checked in this morning has it?

There was a flash mob in Glasgow today- I wasn't there but saw the pictures and it was quite awesome. This mass movement of 'ordinary' people isn't going to disappear on the 19th.

I saw quite a few people with 'no thanks' stickers on today. Let's just say none of them looked like they were on £80k Wink.

A question I'd like to ask: what impact do people think a yes/no vote will have on the OECD happiness index both for adults and children, which I understand the UK doesn't fare well on atm?

WildThong · 06/09/2014 19:40

I hope the poll in tomorrow's Sunday Times isn't based on the mumsnet survey! 8/10 voters would prefer to bang Alex Salmond Wink

Thanks for quick responses, happy to post to a new thread if anyone interested.....

Was sent the 'wee blue book' by a colleague at work. Anyone read it, us it worth reading?

Numanoid · 06/09/2014 19:45

I say it is, although many people will say no. I would read if I were you, and see what you think. :)

Thanks for the new thread Statistically!

No, that's entirely wrong. There will always be another chance. Next time it will be better prepared, hopefully with some real answers, and there will be a big Yes majority.

WildThong · 06/09/2014 19:48

spider doesn't do any harm to read it, but it won't give you the unbiased view that you seek

WildThong · 06/09/2014 19:49

Woo hoo
