Thanks for the useful advice Irn!

Sallyingforth · 04/09/2014 18:35

Serious question

If the referendum result is very close either way, half of the electorate are going to be overjoyed and half will be disappointed.

Would it be possible do you think for representatives of both sides to thrash out a compromise, devo max with powers to be agreed?

grovel · 04/09/2014 18:35

IrnBruTheNoo, aren't you a bit concerned?

I'm English and the accepted truth down here (at least among my friends and acquaintances) is that Scottish education has been better than English education.

OP posts:
IrnBruTheNoo · 04/09/2014 18:36

Sorry that was in response to Roseformeplease.

IrnBruTheNoo · 04/09/2014 18:36

Why should I be concerned grovel??

WildThong · 04/09/2014 18:37

But Rose is a teacher irn she is telling us what it's like from the inside

IrnBruTheNoo · 04/09/2014 18:37

I went through the Scottish education system and DC are doing the same. I don't have an issue with it all.

frankie80 · 04/09/2014 18:37

i think we should all do the survey MN emailed us out as I presume they'll discuss the results in the webchat

Iggi999 · 04/09/2014 18:39

Roseformeplease Health &WB time will include any time spent on PE, FCT, personal/social education and also elements of courses in all other subjects. It either hasn't been explained well to your dc or they have picked it up wrongly.

Criseyde · 04/09/2014 18:40

"Would it be possible do you think for representatives of both sides to thrash out a compromise, devo max with powers to be agreed?"

This was actually exactly why Iain McLean (quoted in the TG article LCF linked to) recommended taking devo max off the ballot paper: because it would have been possible, depending on how the questions were ordered/tiered for there to have been a majority vote for yes, and a majority vote for devo max (double peaking). So it was thought better to go for a yes/no question and a clear outcome.

Iggi999 · 04/09/2014 18:40

I don't think Rose can be a teacher or she would know how cfe works surely!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/09/2014 18:45

No. Devo-max was taken off the ballot paper. The options are independence or status-quo. There will be no mandate for any other option on the 19th. It will have to be one or the other.

Sallyingforth · 04/09/2014 18:57

Yes I'm well aware devo-max was taken off the paper and it's far too late to change that now.
But with such a close result it seems that half the voters are going to be unhappy. A pragmatic agreement after the vote might result in something that would please a lot more people.
Just a thought from a non-voter who doesn't want to see it all go wrong up there.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 04/09/2014 19:02

IrnBru, you're attitude is bizarre - plenty of people don't agree with CofE in our community and are unhappy. None of them expect to have to move country for having a legitimate opinion.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 04/09/2014 19:03

urgh, CforE Grin plenty folk don't agree with CofE, that's for sure Grin

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/09/2014 19:03

A pragmatic agreement after the vote might result in something that would please a lot more people.

What I meant was I don't think legally they can, because no-one will have voted for devo-max.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 04/09/2014 19:05

Sallying I agree it's a shame there seems to be no room for compromise if the result is 49/51% - that's a lot of unhappy people either way

Sallyingforth · 04/09/2014 19:13

The vote asks if Scotland should be an independent country, not must.

If both parliaments agreed on something different, I don't see why that couldn't happen.

I think that engineering a 'compromise' after a democratic referendum with a majority result, would smack of 1979 rules.

Sallyingforth · 04/09/2014 19:16

Well then Neville according to the polls it will be a nightmare.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 04/09/2014 19:17

Sallying, are you a lawyer Grin?

Squatting, I agree - my father is muttering already there'll be rioting in the streets if there's a No. I think there might be demonstrations if there's a close vote either way.

OOAOML · 04/09/2014 19:25

What I meant was I don't think legally they can, because no-one will have voted for devo-max.

If there is a No vote other options can be considered. Personally, were I in charge, I would do this via a second referendum, I don't think it should be rushed into and I don't think it should be dependent on the general election.

OOAOML · 04/09/2014 19:26

I don't actually fear riots. I think tensions will be high and there might be a few incidents, but not the massive consequences some expect.

DoctorTwo · 04/09/2014 19:28

That means setting up a central bank, with billions of a recognised stable currency in its accounts (or gold in its vaults).

We have billions in a recognised stable currency and/or gold backing our Scottish notes already.

The pound is backed by nothing. Independence is a perfect opportunity for Scotland to move towards a currency that retains its value by backing it with either something finite or something tangible. One economic commentator jokingly suggested backing it with whisky. My suggestion is to back the Scottish pound with a finite cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin. Coins and notes embedded with unique numbers devised by mathematics can be issued and scanned, any numbers not recognised instantly recognised as fake.

The best thing about using these alt. currencies is you can't fake a mathematical algorithm, and as long as you keep your security up to date they're difficult to steal. Plus, when the pound/dollar, actually just about every FIAT currency either goes tits up or the banks go bust in a couple of years time your digital currency will be the only currency, other than Bitcoin , gold or silver worth anything because of its exclusivity.
