My friend kept dds money and used Tesco vouchers

Hi, ds had inservice yesterday and a friend (a mum from school) offered to take her, her own dd and 2 others to an amusement park, entry fee was 25 pounds. When ds got back in the afternoon, we chatted about the day and it turns out the mum paid for my dd and the 2 other children with Tesco vouchers, ie, she had redeemed her Tesco points to pay for the 4 dcs and then kept 75 pounds form my dd and the 2 other dc. Surely she could have told us that this place took in Tesco vouchers and I could have used my own points and saved the money? I'm grateful that she took dd but surely she should have been upfront about her intention of using vouchers....AIBU?

Oh, ok, that's what I was getting confused about! (Don't have CC, and read about friend would have had to send off for the vouchers).
I suppose the point of all the discussion is whether people view the worth of these points on their cost, or value (and even harder in this case as value is different in different places). That seems to be the crux of this issue.....
I also think it's relevant how close of a friendship you have, because in my opinion I would share my points and their benefits with my sisters or close friends and not think anything of it, but wouldn't for a parent of my DCs friends if that makes sense.
Ultimately I think OP should discuss with friend one way or the other, but doesn't seem like she will, which I doubt will bode well for the friendship.
And seeing as she's bowed out, we won't know one way or the other.
Thanks for being so gracious Smile

I've just realised that when I've treated people they've probably taken it for granted and not appreciated it, because they haven't realised it was a loss to me of something else I could buy. They just think it's free, so no loss to me. Confused

whatever5 · 05/09/2014 18:47

But clubcard boost means a voucher for 1/4 gate gets a full price entry ticket.

People keep saying that but I know of no theme park where the entrance would be 6.25 in clubcard vouchers.

slithytove · 05/09/2014 18:55

Yes bouttime, that is probably the case when I've done it too.

Rocket - not a problem, I don't think there is necessarily a right or wrong here, it does seem to be how one views the value of the vouchers.

Whenever - I can't find that exact amount either, but on tesco website there are various day passes available for different theme parks ranging from £4.50 - £12.50 in clubcard vouchers. No idea what that is as a % of gate entry cost though.

slithytove · 05/09/2014 18:57

whatever not whenever. Sorry!

whatever5 · 05/09/2014 19:01

I've just looked some Theme Parks up. Surprise, surprise- nothing is 6.25 ....
In club card vouchers, Alton towers is 12.50, Chessington's World of Adventure is 12, Drayton Manor is 10.50, Legland is 12.50, Thorpe Park is 12.

So in reality OP's friend used approximately 10.50 to 12.50 pounds in clubcard vouchers rather than getting 21 to 25 pounds off food in Tesco.....

Bouttimeforwine · 05/09/2014 19:11

So no real benefit to ops friend then and no sly cheeky motives...

Well it's been fun arguing over nothing. A good thread Grin

NewtRipley · 05/09/2014 19:14

It is a good thread.

I think, i wouldn't do what friend did, but also, I don't think I'd bitch and moan of a friend did it to me. I'd be squeamish about doing it, but I don't actually think it is wrong, and certainly my gratitude about friend taking my child out would override anything else.

AgaPanthers · 05/09/2014 19:15

That's not true at all.

Adventure Island
Adventure Wonderland
Brean Leisure Park
Crealy Adventure Parks
Flambards
Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach
Lightwater Valley
M&Ds
Ocean Beach
Pleasure Island
Pleasurewood Hills

all operate on the 4 for 1 scheme.

And, Adventure Island is specifically £25 on the gate

www.adventureisland.co.uk/openingtimes.html

So it would be exactly £6.25 in vouchers for 1 child at Adventure Island for a ticket that costs £25 on the gate.

Notso · 05/09/2014 19:19

Whatever none of those cost £25 to get in unless you book in advance.

mewkins · 05/09/2014 19:20

Eh? If you use the vouchers in store eg. £ 12.50s worth then you get 12.50 worth of groceries. However if you use 12.50 of vouchers to buy a 25 quid ticket and pocket the 25 quid of actual money from the child then you have in effect doubled your money.

Was the op's point that the wkman shoukd have said up front that she was gping to use the vouchers and given the op and other parents the opportunity to use their own vouchers if they had them. Or offer to 'sell them the vouchers perhaps.

There is no way I could say to someone that I have days out tokens and they should give me the cash for them like for like. They are just not worth the cash equivalent.

DamnBamboo · 05/09/2014 19:20

Ha slithy Smile

I thought it was a 'Whatevvvver!

My bad! (just to get down with the lingo although I actually has this phrase)

DamnBamboo · 05/09/2014 19:22

What a thread eh?

I think we've been round in circles about 15 times now

I will however bow out and now and go and find a good Friday night thread.

Laters all!

Peace and love Smile

Very poor form. Sounds like she planned the outing as a way of making a quick few quid. If I had vouchers and took a friend's child I wouldn't dream of taking the money to "reimburse" myself.

whatever5 · 05/09/2014 19:28

AgaPanthers I missed Adventure Island as I didn't really consider it to be a theme park and I assumed the OP's friend would have bought tickets online (if not using vouchers). Drayton Manor is £25 online and £10.50 in vouchers.

whatever5 · 05/09/2014 19:31

Eh? If you use the vouchers in store eg. £ 12.50s worth then you get 12.50 worth of groceries.

Not at the moment (you get twice the amount with clubcard boost)

AgaPanthers · 05/09/2014 19:32

The OP actually said 'amusement park'. Not theme park. And you can't buy tickets online unless you book in advance, and even if you do, it still costs £21.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 05/09/2014 19:36

Lovely to see most of you still here :)

whatever5 · 05/09/2014 19:37

I missed the fact that she had said "amusement park" rather than theme park. I assumed that OP's friend would have booked in advance online (if not using vouchers) as she obviously had time to get the tickets via Tesco Clubcard in advance.

whatever5 · 05/09/2014 19:38

I think I will leave this thread now as have wasted far too much time looking up prices!

Notso · 05/09/2014 19:39

I assumed the OP's friend would have bought tickets online
Why, when OP has said she knows the friend used clubcard vouchers at the gate?
Drayton Manor is £25 online but you can't use clubcard points to book online.

mewkins · 05/09/2014 19:43

Ah I see! I only ever exchange for general days out tokens and use them for zoos and the like. The groceries double value exchange is not usually on is it?

vrocket · 05/09/2014 19:44

AgaPanthers, the entrance fee shown on the Tesco site are what you would pay if you booked in advance, if you check the actual website of the theme parks they will tell you the price of paying at the gate.

This is where I was getting confused, whether the OP had already benefited from the friend by only paying the cash equivalent of the discounted voucher rate, or whether the friend had just used the vouchers to pay the gate rate.
And I doubt that the OP will be back to clarify the situation so it's all guess work really.
That is also a really interesting point regarding people's gratitude when they have been treated with vouchers...

whatever5 · 05/09/2014 19:49

Why, when OP has said she knows the friend used clubcard vouchers at the gate?

She didn't use clubcard vouchers at the gate because you can't do that for any of the days out. You have swap vouchers for tickets or clubcard tokens in advance. For the places you list the tokens take up to five days to arrive.

whatever5 · 05/09/2014 19:51

The groceries double value exchange seems to happen quite often.
