I am so angry!

ok sorry if this is long, but I just need to get this off my chest, and to know if I was being the unreasonable one.

ok so today I went to asda. parked in a normal space as no p&c available. I opened my car door, as wide as it could go, guiding it with my hand and resting it against the car next to me gently, to climb into the back and pull out DD (I only have a 2 door car)

in the middle of this, I hear a very angry woman shout into my car "move your door off my car" - I was about to explain that I hadn't let it hit off her car, but just placed it there instead of opening the door a little bit and chancing a gust of wind coming and slamming it against her car - but I'm a wimp so I just apologised and closed the door and waited for them to pull out of the space.

I was playing with DDs hair, waiting on them leaving, when I heard a massive bang against my car. the passenger had deliberately flung her door open full force and slammed it into my car.

i looked in at her and she just shrugged as if to say "what you gonna do about it?" like i say I'm a wimp, but I got out the car at this point, and checked my car - she has made a massive dent and scratch down the drivers side of the door.

they drove away while I was looking at this and I didn't catch the reg plate.

I just can't stop being angry at this, they deliberately damaged my car, for nothing! but now I'm thinking, should I not have let my car door touch their car? would you have a similar reaction if you seen a car door open and sitting against your car?

except the Audi which doesn't have one at all.

treacle I think it was to me. Wink

None of the cars I have owned in the last 10 years have had a buffer strip and they haven't been fancy expensive cars. A vauxhall, a Kia, a Nissan, a renault. One of them had a colour coded strip across the middle but it didn't stop scratches from other car doors.

I've only read a few pages in to this thread, but some of the replies on here are utterly ridiculous. People are cocks for not wanting you touching their property? Get a grip. Let's put it in a different perspective. Let's say I was out cycling, and I was was pretty tired so I decided I needed a rest. I rest my bike, SOFTLY, against your car, and lean up against the front door of your house taking a break. If you saw that, what would you do? Bare in mind there is no damage at all. I'm sure the people calling others 'cocks' in this thread wouldn't be best pleased. My car is still my property, and I don't really think anyone has the right to touch it, no matter how careful they are. A car is a huge investment, especially for me at my age with the car I drive. If I saw someone with their door against mine, bouncing around inside i would be absolutely fuming. What the other person did was still a huge over reaction and completely wrong, but it sounds like the red mist descended and they made an extremely stupid, spur of the moment decision. Can't wait to be called a cock by some self entitled parent who thinks the world should stop for them and their kids.

Hi,
I would wait in Asda carpark where the car was damaged armed with a digital camera then take a photo of the driver and her car. When they go shopping go to the car and look at the car door that slammed into yours paying attention to the damage on the area of the door for damage, your car paint marks etc then proceed to the local police station with your evidence. This is called Criminal Damage so you might get somewhere with it!

Totally out of order!

For What it's worth if I'm ever in that situation I put a blanket/muslin over my car door where it will touch the other car so there is definitely not gonna be damage to paint while i wrestle the baby/car seat.

The women in the other car is obviously a nutcase but i do agree, you shouldn't have touched the car. i understand its frustrating but you shouldn't be touching other people property.people spend a lot of money on their cars, and while you may think it was a harmless act, in their eyes it isn't.

Of you can't manage to get baby out without doing that, consider getting a different car.

yesyesyess · 12/10/2018 06:06

I'm surprised how many people think its Ok to rest their cat door against people's car. I'd be furious and would be inspecting for damage as well. I have scratches on my car door already not a dent. I work hard to buy my car so yes I'm entitled to be pissed off. What she did is crazy but you were unreasonable too.

yesyesyess · 12/10/2018 06:11

Someone blithely said upthread "it's acceptable to rest your door on another car". Well, maybe to you, but not to me. And it's my car, so I have every right to have an opinion on what is and isn't acceptable in the way it's treated by random strangers.

This! The real cocks are PPs who think its Ok to potentially damage people's property.

IAmAllAsttonishnent · 12/10/2018 06:23

I used to work in car claims - even if the passenger said it was an accident the driver/ vehicle is still liable for any damage caused and nobody would bat an eyelid at you claiming for it.

Also, you really need to stop being a wimp and stand up for yourself. You don’t need to start fights but an ‘Excuse me- I was VERY careful not to damage your car and you’ve just flung your door into mine! I want your insurance info’ and if they said no a nice loud ‘ no problem I’ll get it from the ASDA CCTV’

IAmAllAsttonishnent · 12/10/2018 06:30

🤔 to those of you saying it’s unacceptable to rest your door against another car (without causing any damage)

5 years working in car insurance claims and a full understanding of exactly what is/ isn’t allowed - ITS FINE AND NOT LIKING IT IS YOUR OWN PROBLEM!

Your car is far more likely to be damaged by a door being opened a small way and then blow the rest of the way. Also if a door is ‘blown’ open and slams into your car it’s MUCH more difficult to claim as it’s not a person doing it it’s an ‘act of god’, well it’s a grey area that will result in a long argument or your claim being dropped because your insurance company simply CBA with it.

In insurance/ claims/ legal circles its generally accepted that parking spaces are not big enough and people do have the right to enter/ exit their vehicle whilst parked. You have no legal right to stop someone resting their door against yours and tbf you probably stand less chance of damage that way - so sit back down!
