wibu to kick off in tesco?

jellybelly701 · 01/09/2014 16:18

Ordered my weekly shop yesterday, just groceries and baby food, nothing that is age restricted. The delivery guy wouldn't let me sign for it as I have no proof I'm over 18. I am almost 22 with a 10mo baby. We have no food at all so I can't even cook his dinner.

I am furious!! Why on earth do I have to prove I'm over 18 to buy a chicken and some veg? Especially when I could go in store and purchase exactly what I have ordered and wouldn't even need to be 16 never mind 18! So thanks to fucking Tesco both me and my son will be going hungry tonight. Arseholes.

I'm in two minds of carrying ds to Tesco to kick off a bit, how can they let a baby go hungry like that for no logical reason? I'm actually in tears I'm so bloody angry!!! Ughhhh!!!

You don't sound like the right sort of person for a customer facing job Gemma. Very unprofessional.

GemmaWella81 · 01/09/2014 17:32

Tortoise..

Tonnes of people as in the 'what about my baby' routine I used to get for their own mistakes.

The op now knows she needs Id, weird rules but that's what it is. I think it's not on these days to not have decent Id. Unfortunate in this case

tittifilarious · 01/09/2014 17:32

I didn't know bank staff were allowed to make personal judgements on their customers so thanks for that nugget Gemma. I'm sure you were as helpful as possible to the "stressy young mum".

You are mistaken though when you say you need photo ID to open accounts with debit cards though - I have 2 which were opened before I had photo ID, one of which was an account opened as a child and automatically converted to an adult account.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 01/09/2014 17:33

I said what I did in a calm authorative tone...

Except for you have no authority to tell people where or where not to spend their money, surely?

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 01/09/2014 17:34

And may I just add - I have a new (less than 6 months old) account with TSB, with a debit card, opened online.

ID was asked for, but not photo ID.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 01/09/2014 17:35

YANBU - complain now especially about the fact you won't get your money back for days so can't even get your shopping. Ridiculous to leave you without food when there were no restricted items in your shopping.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 01/09/2014 17:35

Based on your attitude towards customers and lack of knowledge of basic ID procedures I would ask for better training to do your job if I were you!

Nessalina · 01/09/2014 17:36

FYI you can open most bank accounts without photo ID, as long as you can prove you exist with paper ID, eg. council tax bill, benefits letter, doctor's introduction letter.

I've always used Sainsbury's for online shopping, and I've never seen anything about needing to be over 18. Never been IDed either. Perhaps time to give Tesco the boot!
I know the driver was just 'following policy', but seriously, surely if you can show the debit card that you purchased the shopping with, that would be enough? The shop's already got their money, there's no restricted items being delivered - what's the possible harm that could be done?!
I also think it's a bit bloody off to charge for the shopping and not refund it for several days.
Get a takeaway OP - keep the receipt and take it to Tesco tomorrow. Ask to see the manager and ask for a refund for the food you had to buy at short notice. Highlight the rubbishness of their system!

bauhausfan · 01/09/2014 17:36

I never had photo ID until a couple of years ago when I got a provisional driver's license - I am 43.

efishinsea · 01/09/2014 17:39

I've been asked for ID for a online delivery (no alcohol) and I'm 32 (and I look 32). I had ID to show but it still annoyed me because it seemed so ridiculous so I understand your frustration OP. I would have been livid if I couldn't find my ID and the shopping was taken away.

MsAnthropic · 01/09/2014 17:40

Gemma If a customer screams at you, you have every right to ask them to desist. As a customer adviser, you do not have the right to pass judgements. You can point out that their spending has exceeded their available balance, or their actions have resulted in credit ratings of whatever, but personal judgements on individual transactions are totally unprofessional. Senior bank managers don't even do that, no-one in banks speaks like that. And nothing you've said about your working experience has any relevance to the OP.

Fixerupperz · 01/09/2014 17:41

Ive just opened a new bank account with full debit facilities without photo ID.
The thing that would annoy me in this situation is you have to wait 3 working days for your money back.
A couple of years ago i ordered a big shop with asda but it snowed so they didnt turn up and i couldnt get my money back for days, its difficult when you are living week/month to month Sad

Hope you get things sorted OP Smile

MrsWinnibago · 01/09/2014 17:46

OP you need to get ID. You need to get a passport or a drivers liscence. You can't live like this! It's Victorian! Your partner's bank may fund things but you need something official of your own.

sparechange · 01/09/2014 17:46

I'm stunned at the reaction OP is getting on here.
Having photographic ID isn't a prerequisite of being an adult, and I'm pretty sure a birth certificate isn't proof without some sort of photographic ID.

Tesco are being beyond petty, and you should be angry, but you'll get a much better response from them if you are calm and rational. Might be worth putting something on twitter as well, but again, calmly.

Is there a corner shop nearby where you can buy some eggs and milk and bread for scrambled eggs on toast, or similar? Maybe take a rucksack so you can carry your DS back with the shopping?

FunkyZebraHat · 01/09/2014 17:50

I've never, ever been asked to prove my age. I'm 32. I don't have any (current) photo id either but I have other ID. Can't justify the cost of renewing my passport when I can't afford to go abroad. Not allowed to learn to drive so no driving license. I'm glad I haven't met people like so many of you on this thread who are acting like not having a photo ID is the crime of the century. Hope you get something sorted OP.

LisaMed · 01/09/2014 17:50

Gemma I am an old biddy, but have debit cards, credit cards and a mortgage. I have no photo ID and haven't had for at least twenty years. During that time I also was recruited as a temp, a civil servant and a legal secretary.

It is more cost effective for me to get a letter from my Doctor certifying my identity when I get around to making my will than getting photo ID.

OP are any of the neighbours okay to keep an eye on your little one so that you can nip to the shop? When will your DH be back? Good luck.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 01/09/2014 17:51

You're NHS card has date of birth so that might do. A provision licence is £50. That a lot if you're not actually wanting to drive.

Cornettoninja · 01/09/2014 17:56

Fuck me people are judgy. As it's been pointed out already there's no legal requirement to have photo i.d so it's ridiculous Tesco haven't got a back up.

Op, life would be easier with id, if you start looking for work in the future a lot of places ask for proof of residence in the country and a passport or driving license are the easiest way to do it. If I were you I'd fire off an email complaining and then see if a neighbour could spare you a bit of bread and eggs or beans to make supper.

Fletchermoss · 01/09/2014 17:58

My 13 year old son signed for my Ocado delivery but they wouldn't leave the alcohol, paracetamol and non-alcoholic beer. Fair enough (except for the non-alcoholic beer). Tell them that you will shop at Ocado in future, especially as they are doing free delivery Tuesday to Thursdays.

MaidOfStars · 01/09/2014 18:04

Don't most jobs ask for photo ID these days? And house rentals etc?

I have assumed the issue is not an age restriction for buying the goods but for authorising payment?

GemmaWella81 · 01/09/2014 18:05

As others have said... Good ID makes life far more easier irrespective of random Tesco rules. My earlier point was that the OP has some form of ID due to her bank account.

In the last month I've had to produce photographic ID for:

Cross channel ferry... Passport
Partners work car insurance... DL
New job.... DL

If I didn't have good ID then all would've been unavailable to me. I'm sorry I let myself get dragged into the banking debate even though my op asked for it.

MrsWinnibago · 01/09/2014 18:09

I think the OP is being recieved in an incredulous fashion because she has NO access to money. Her partner's bank account paid for the shopping and look...she has no other funds....no proper bank account of her own. That is Not Good.

If it were that they were a bit short but usually she'd have access then that's different.

Janethegirl · 01/09/2014 18:10

Gemma you are being exceedingly aggressive to the OP. You don't always need photo ID to open a bank account, utility bills are generally sufficient.

MrsWinnibago · 01/09/2014 18:11

Jane I must have missed Gemma;s aggression? Confused

YouTheCat · 01/09/2014 18:12

Not everyone has a spare £50 lying around to get photo id though.
