AIBU?

wibu to kick off in tesco?

jellybelly701 · 01/09/2014 16:18

Ordered my weekly shop yesterday, just groceries and baby food, nothing that is age restricted. The delivery guy wouldn't let me sign for it as I have no proof I'm over 18. I am almost 22 with a 10mo baby. We have no food at all so I can't even cook his dinner.

I am furious!! Why on earth do I have to prove I'm over 18 to buy a chicken and some veg? Especially when I could go in store and purchase exactly what I have ordered and wouldn't even need to be 16 never mind 18! So thanks to fucking Tesco both me and my son will be going hungry tonight. Arseholes.

I'm in two minds of carrying ds to Tesco to kick off a bit, how can they let a baby go hungry like that for no logical reason? I'm actually in tears I'm so bloody angry!!! Ughhhh!!!

the driver is following the rules. He could get fired otherwise.

sorry, OP, but you need to get a citizen card or similar. And I know babies are time-consuming, but find that birth certificate or order another!

Tesco didn't turn up a couple of weeks ago. I rang and calmly ranted, and mentioned howembarassing it was ( supposed to take some food to cubs that night) and how I was minded to ask them today for a takeaway. They refunded £10.

Don't you have a utilities bill to offer? Or did he specify photo id?

Report

As delivered the next morning.

So who exactly is going around checking that these drivers are checking ID? No one I'd suspect.

Utterly stupid rule as there were no age restricted items in the order anyway.

well, firstly I would get some ID and secondly I would make sure I always have something, even if it's beans or a can of soup and some bread in the freezer, in your cupboards so that you and your baby won't go hungry.

If this is Tesco's policy then, daft as it may seem, you can't blame the driver or the staff in your local store - and presumably if you can get to your store to kick off, you can buy some food when you're there?

It is a ridiculous policy. I can't see any reason why a 14 yr old couldn't accept shopping if it wasn't filled with knives and gas cylinders.

That said - I can't believe you have got to 21 without having to provide ID. You can't move without someone asking you for ID these days.

Grin at "had a rough paper round."

My 16 year old DS has taken delivery of our online food shop before now. I vary where I shop so I can't remember which supermarket it is, but one of them clearly states that someone over the age of 18 must be available to sign for the delivery if ordering alcohol or other age restricted products.

I read that the first time I needed to plan a delivery for a time when only DS1 would be home - I remember thinking "so it's fine as long as we don't order any booze".

Sounds like it wasn't Tesco then!

I would totally understand if I had brought alcohol or knives. But meat and veg? Really? What harm can be done?

We stayed at mils for 8 days and only returned last night so the cupboards and fridge are completely empty. We have some chips in the freezer but they are not really suitable for my 10mo olds dinner.

My pushchair base is in the boot of my partners car. Carrying DS to the shop and back would be a struggle but doable, carrying DS and shopping back is just not possible.

My £4 delivery charge will not be refunded and they said it will take around 3 days to get my £90 back for my shopping.

I've never been asked for id by Tesco delivery drivers, even when I ordered alcohol, so either they do have some discretion in the matter or every driver I've dealt with was bending the rules. I think they should apply these rules fairly rather than arbitrarily to avoid confusion.

Gemma if I had ID I would have shown it to him! The shopping was paid for via my partners bank account. I have a savings account that was opened when I was little and was put into my name before my 18th birthday. I did NOT need to provide anything other than my birth certificate.

My baby IS going hungry because the cupboards are bare. we can't afford to have an ever lasting stock of pantry foods, we can only buy what we absolutely need to feed ourselves for the week. Good on you for being able to afford a pantry full of 'back up' foods but I cant.

Im just shocked that a 21 year old has never been out to the pub or nightclub?!

also, chips will be fine for a 10 months old dinner as a one off.

that being said, i think it is a stupid policy and i would be really pissed off if i were you! But its really not the stores fault so ywbu to kick off at store staff.

I didn't need a birth certificate to set up my bank account, just bills in my name at my address. And my old bank details from my child account.

No drivers license, passport has been out of date for years.

And most places want photographic id not a paper birth certificate, I have my short birth certificate, not the full one, tatty scrap of paper!

So you're stating you have no banking access apart from a savings account?

Which btw you'd need id to access the funds...

Sorry, I've served tonnes of people like you when I worked in a bank. I've had the 'but my baby' emotional blackmail spiel far too many times. I once said to a girl to spending her benefit money in GAP if it meant her baby hot fed. Heard it before far too many times.

To stop spending her benefit money in GAP

That's how it should've read

The thing is tesco will have charged OP's account. And it will take about 5 days for it it to go back in! So if that was all the money they have they certainly will go hungry.

Gemma I also work for a bank and you don't need photo ID to open a bank account and some savings accounts have cash cards, so no ID needed to withdraw.

I also have a bank account that was opened by my parents when I was 11 and I had no photo ID to open that either. When I was 16 they upgraded it automatically to a normal bank account, again no ID needed.

So lay off the OP.

Pantry? Laughable...

How about a few half eaten packs of pasta and random sauces.... That's more an accurate description

Jesus Christ, some of you are nasty bastards.

I've never been ID'd. Even when I was young.

The driver was a bloody jobs worth.

Hope you get something sorted OP. I know what it's like to have no money for extras.

Try and get some form of ID sorted. The citizen card sounds ideal.

I'd have ben pissed off too, but now you know it's going to be a problem, you have to get something sorted out.
ID for you to prove you are over 18 (DD gets carded all the time and she's almost 24)
Always have the makings of a couple of days meals in the house. Yes, they were being a PITA but it will happen over and over again in all sorts of different ways. You need to think ahead if you have a dependent.
Short-term, borrow from a friend or neighbour, get someone to go with you to the shops to carry, borrow a buggy...

Which bank? I'll happily take a look at the identification requirements...

You can open up a cash card account without photographic Id. But no debit card permitted...

My sister opened hers without photo ID. She has none has never been abroad and doesn't drive.

However OP are you seriously saying you have no milk for your baby? Hmm

No family or friends or neighbours that could lend you some money/baby milk/food?

Even if I didn't know my neighbours I'd still ask them before letting my baby go hungry.

Also, a ten month old is presumably being weaned in which case I'd try them with the chips.

I've been to pubs clubs, I have even worked in a few but have never been asked for ID because I look older than what I am, I could get into clubs when I was just 14.

I can't give him just chips for dinner, he's got an awful cold and has been off his food for the past few days so I need to get as much goodness in him as possible. Even if he wasn't ill I wouldn't just give him chips alone as a main meal if he was 6 maybe but not at 10months.

I just can't Understand why its fine for me to buy these things in store but not online. A 10yo could do that shop in store with no problems, what a stupid policy.
