Tomato ketchup?

Had lunch at a relatives house today. They gave us bacon sandwiches, but only supplied brown sauce (travesty!). When I politely asked if there was any tomato ketchup, I just got a blank look followed by "well, I suppose we might have some tomato puree in the back of the cupboard".

AIBU to think that bacon sandwiches need tomato ketchup and it's just wrong to not even offer any?

My mother in law doesn't have ketchup in her house. I bought a small bottle once but it had disappeared the next time we visited. She's from the New World so could be excused but FIL is Irish so should know the sauce rules, surely?

YANBU, as long as it's tomato ketchup and not "red sauce"!!

YABU. Brown sauce is a must.

I'm another no sauce for bacon sandwiches person. The only time I use tomato sauce is when making marie rose to mix with prawns.

YABU!

Bacon sarnies - brown sauce only

Sausage sarnies - ketchup only.

HTH!

YABU, I like ketchup but bacon sandwiches do not need sauce, in fact it ruins them. No butter either, just fresh white bread dipped in the pan.

Yes, WhoKnows, put any sauce in a bacon sandwich and you lose the bacon taste. Sauces were first introduced to hide the taste of rotting meat. Garlic and hot spices were for the same purpose. I suppose gravy is a sauce, too.

Butter? BUTTER!

No that is wrong on so many levels. You need the bacon fat to be lightly absorbed by the bread.

Butter is ok on some hot sandwiches eg chip butty, but not on bacon

YANBU
Bacon sandwich, white bread and tomato ketchup is a given.

Sausage sandwich needs brown sauce though, while fried egg or omelette sandwich should have mayonnaise!

Butter/spread completely spoils the taste. If I forget to say when ordering one, the disappointment knows no bounds.

Got to be brown sauce, also on full Englishes.

I'm in bed waiting for one to be brought to me now. Hope you are all Envy

I agree with you Bouttimeforwine - butter in a bacon sandwich is rank.

No, there has to be butter. Not any other kind of spread, though.

there has to be butter. No. No. No.

All you need is the bacon juice soaking into the bread. Butter just interferes.

Dip - DIP? For a bacon sandwich?? Dip is for raw vegetables, breadsticks, crisps and pitta bread.
Piccalilli?
Philadelphia?? That is yummy with smoked salmon on a bagel. But for a bacon sandwich??????????

Sorry, I have to go and lie down. I'm just swooning in horror

Butter in a bacon sandwich - Mmmmm lovely. Makes the bread moist (and buttery) - brings out the flavour of the bacon, and adds soft texture to the bread. Any sauce drowns out the flavour of the bacon. Grin

I do BLT with mayonnaise, though - that's nice!

Ah, that's the thing, OnlyLovers - the bacon needs to be crisp, crumbly even, so not a lot of juice to soak in.

My mantra is 'bacon should not bend'....

Damn. I now want a bacon sarnie (but with HP sauce). Will have to make do with fish finger, hope we have mayo

I looked up bacon jam.

It appears to be a sort of bacon chutney, rather than jam, with onion and vinegar and brown sugar in the ingredients. I would imagine it should appeal more to brown sauce afficionados.

I have a jar in my cupboard. I think it's a sort of chutney. Looking forward to trying it, with some cheese and crusty bread. Smile

We don't have ketchup in the house. If someone asked we would look blank too. I eat brown sauce occasionally, so you might get some of that if you were lucky.

Russ, for bacon on a plate as part of a breakfast, yes. But in a roll I like a bit of give to my bacon. Crispy edges but a bit soft in the middle, and just enough juice.

Bacon jam is vile, BTW. It's the kind of thing you buy on impulse at a lovely farmers market, seduced by the idea that it will turn you into someone who's got a kitchen like Nigel Slater. Then you get home and try it and come to your senses.

Oh, for goodness' sake! Not everyone can be responsible for all of the world's problems all of the time. A lighthearted thread is just what it is. I'd take a guess that the majority of the posters on this thread contribute to a charity or charities of some sort.

We're talking bacon sandwiches here, not diamond-encrusted rings!!
