Tomato ketchup?

Had lunch at a relatives house today. They gave us bacon sandwiches, but only supplied brown sauce (travesty!). When I politely asked if there was any tomato ketchup, I just got a blank look followed by "well, I suppose we might have some tomato puree in the back of the cupboard".

AIBU to think that bacon sandwiches need tomato ketchup and it's just wrong to not even offer any?

MAYONNAISE! Are you mad. Yeah, yeah if it's a BLT. But this wasn't a BLT. They aren't nearly so good anyway.

It was a bacon sandwich and they must have Heinz tomato ketchup on them or the world is knocked off its axis.

Bacon Jam? Bacon jam? It's weird enough that some parts of the world think it's a good idea to serve it with maple syrup. But bacon jam?

That's very, very wrong.

And now I want to know how bad it really tastes, although it is clearly the end of civilisation.

Crispy bacon with only good mayonnaise is definitely best. Brown sauce is the next best, but only HP (though I'm still pissed off that they moved production of it out of the UK). Tommy K is alright (Heinz only), but not ideal.

Has to be a little ketchup for me. And I'm not northern, or southern, just Midlands Grin

But it can be a nice home made ketchup.

Mushroom ketchup doesn't really work, the ones I can get hold of (usually from delis, not seen it in a supermarket for some time) are usually quite liquid. But it's really good for adding a meaty taste to casseroles & stews, etc.

Bugger. We have no bacon. I knew I should have got some yesterday.

Oh, meant to add that DS (aged nearly 11) loves a bacon roll, and has it no butter but some ketchup.

If it's bacon, I need one and a half sarnies (on thick white bread, off an uncut loaf). Thus:

One half - tomatoe ketchup
One half - just butter

Last half? Depends on which of the above was best.

Sausage sarnie? Brown sauce. Always.

This is the one and true and only way.

FACT.

But - oh fuck - a fried egg and bacon sarnie is undecided.

Shit.

If it is white sliced bread, nothing.

If it is a pita bread with lettuce then it needs a touch of creme fresh.

Ketchup and BS are just wrong, on anything.

I prefer a Bacon sandwich without any sauce but I think I might have to try it with mayo now I've seen it mentioned here.

In Scotland we are luckly to have rolls. Served in Newsagents from 6am and Supermarkets open 24/7. Sauce is nice but a fresh roll is 100 times better than bread.

A roll is hard bread, often burnt on top -comes in different preferences- a big dusting of flour, sometimes even hollow and won't keep a day.
Many of us in Scotland don't get the "soft bun stuff" -claggy, sticks to the gum type bread, sounds nasty.

Oh, and one more thing - the only proper bacon is that which has been smoked.

If you add a fried egg, no sauce must be added. People who allow sauce to mix with egg should be deported. Even worse are those who allow baked beans to mix with the fried egg yolk on a cooked breakfast. Those people should be shot.

I prefer bacon without sauce.

Fresh white roll, lots of butter, hot bacon with rind cut off and a fried egg if I'm feeling greedy. Maybe sometimes a bit of tomato sauce is passable but brown sauce should only go on a full English (which must have beans also) Smile

Brown Sauce - No
Ketchup - Huge No

Worcestershire Sauce - Yes! Lots of.

YABU.

Bacon sandwiches would be disgusting with tomato ketchup. Just bacon, white bread & butter is all you need.

Sausage sandwiches, now we're talking brown sauce. Good sausages and a decent brown sauce mind.

I seem to be a heathen, but both? Small amount spread on each half, to one, be the other. Not over crispy bacon. Bread put in bacon fat first. Crusty roll or baguette is optimal.
