Tomato ketchup?

Had lunch at a relatives house today. They gave us bacon sandwiches, but only supplied brown sauce (travesty!). When I politely asked if there was any tomato ketchup, I just got a blank look followed by "well, I suppose we might have some tomato puree in the back of the cupboard".

AIBU to think that bacon sandwiches need tomato ketchup and it's just wrong to not even offer any?

I assumed it was UK law. I am quite shocked citizens of our country would deviate from the bread/bacon/ketchup triadic route. Are they forrin?

ClashCityRocker · 24/08/2014 17:54

Brainwashed, you have it totally the wrong way round! Everyone knows it's red for bacon, brown for sausage.

What exactly is brown sauce made of?

I recently had to describe it to some one, the best I could come up with is brown and sauce-y.

ClashCityRocker · 24/08/2014 17:55

Woah, hold on, mushroom ketchup? What on earth is mushroom ketchup?

Pasithea · 24/08/2014 17:56

What exactly is brown sauce made of?

According to wikipedia, HP Brown Sauce contains malt vinegar, tomatoes, dates, tamarind, sweetener, and spices. It sounds...interesting.

YADNBU. Another Northerner here and I definitely agree that tomato ketchup and bacon sandwich is a classic combination. Brown sauce? Yuck!!!

OnlyLovers · 24/08/2014 18:00

I'm sorry but the phrase 'tommy sauce' makes my toes curl.

ClashCityRocker · 24/08/2014 18:00

Hmm, where might I purchase some mushroom...? Ketchup...?

feeling like Peter Kay with garlic bread

ChippyMinton · 24/08/2014 18:01

The arbiter of taste that is Greggs offers red or brown sauce with their bacon rolls.

In my house you will be offered Daddies, Heinz tomato, mayo, mustard or anything else you fancy - piccalilli, mango chutney, gherkins, pickled garlic - from the top shelf of the fridge. Sliced white, poncey wholegrain stuff, baps, baguette or anything else that's around.

The one constant is the crispy bacon Smile

ClashCityRocker · 24/08/2014 18:01

steff

That does sound interesting..who on earth thought that up?

Shock

Sweet Jesus!

iklboo · 24/08/2014 18:12

Brown sauce with pork pie or a sausage roll is nice though. With a big chunk of cheddar & a packet of salt & vinegar crisps.

Elledouble · 24/08/2014 18:13

Might I quietly suggest wholegrain mustard, or will I be cast out?

WitchWay · 24/08/2014 18:15

Tomato ketchup or fruity sauce for me and the juices from the pan

Grin
Pasithea · 24/08/2014 19:01

Most supermarkets now do mushroom ketchup. Or dellies

RobotLover68 · 24/08/2014 19:04

am I the only one that puts vinegar on my bacon sardines then?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/08/2014 19:05

White bread, lightly toasted or fried in the bacon fat
Crispy bacon
Accompanied by either
Brown sauce
Mushrooms
Or
Lettuce , tomato and mayonnaise

Meow75 · 24/08/2014 19:06

Northerner here.

I loathe tomato ketchup, and I can't get over excited about tomatoes generally.

My DH has all sorts of food based rules - ketchup with bacon, but never with eggs and so on.

I think he's just mad. I don't think I always/never have x with y. If I feel like x, I may have it with y sometimes and sometimes not. No hard and fast rules for me.

ShadowStar · 24/08/2014 19:16

RobotLover - vinegar? Surely that's a typo? Wouldn't it make the bread horrifically soggy?

Incidentally, I spotted some Bacon Jam the last time I was loitering in the condiments aisle in Tesco.

It looked very intriguing, but I wasn't feeling quite adventurous enough to throw it in the trolley. Has anyone here tried Bacon Jam and willing to tell me if they think it's worth a try?
