To think some people are overreacting about the new mobile site?

I appreciate it is not perfect but I think some posters are being a tad over zealous in their criticism. Someone, probably some people, spent a lot of time working on the layout, and whilst I am sure they appreciate some of the feedback, it can't be pleasant to have tons of posters writing about how awful it is/ how much they hate it/ how they think it's ruined MN for them because they simply HAVE to be able to customise their view in a particular way.

It's a different website layout that doesn't work as well for you - in the big scale of things, how serious a problem can that be?

OP posts:
MrsHathaway · 21/08/2014 17:32

There has been lots of bug fixing fiddling today so it already looks better - better background in Active, OP's posts highlighting properly, flip this thread reinstated, some disclaimers reinstated, white background slightly dulled down, username appearing above the text entry box, etc. Hurrah. And that's in response to feedback, so it's good that people are feeding back.

I agree with OP that "I don't liiiiiiike it, I'm leaving forever" is hysteria and unnecessary. "This format is giving me seizures so I daren't continue" and "my software is incompatible so I can't continue" aren't hyperbole.

Conclusion: get a proper Android phone. I'm wondering if the site was deliberately designed for Android given its market share. Also they tend to be cheaper and less buggy than their iEquivalents and MSEquivalents.

StrawberryMouse · 21/08/2014 17:41

I didn't been like the old mobile site and have always used desktop on my phone so I'm a real grumpy fucker. Grin

I do agree the new one is even worse though. And that the layout affects enjoyment of the site.

hiddenhome · 21/08/2014 19:48

What I want to know is, what am I going to do tonight in bed? I usually go I'm MN.

I'll have to read Hmm or have sex Confused

Please can you do something to at least stop the headaches? I know I'm not the only one.

ohmymimi · 21/08/2014 20:15

Hidden, multi task, you can do to things two things at once.Wink

ohmymimi · 21/08/2014 20:18

2 or two, I can spel, reely.

goldopals · 21/08/2014 20:24

I do not like it because I cannot work out how to view all pages at once.

Pseudonym99 · 21/08/2014 21:47

YABU. If they work, computer geeks should just leave it alone. I have noticed a sudden increase in typing/spelling errors since the new mobile site started in, where people are obviously having trouble interfacing with it. They don't have the courtesy to ask first, then they shouldn't be offended when people have a go at them.

meglet · 21/08/2014 21:51

yabu. It barely displays or works on my blackberry.

The old mumsnet was one of the few mobile sites that I could get (it crashed on BBC or guardian for example). Now I can't even surf MN without it being a big faff.

isshoes · 21/08/2014 21:59

pseudonym - you think they should have asked for permission to change it? How would that work?

They did beta test it.

Also - I don't think you can blame posters spelling mistakes on the new site. Nice try, but I think possibly some people just can't spell?

OP posts:
Nicola19 · 21/08/2014 23:08

I don't like it. I don't know, it looks a bit basic.

Pipbin · 21/08/2014 23:35

you think they should have asked for permission to change it? How would that work?

And if they did put a post on each section saying 'we are going to change the way it looks on mobiles'. Everyone would throw their hand in the air and say 'oh this is just like when they started putting the tights with socks in M&S rather than with the knickers'.
I don't know why they changed it, IMHO there was nothing wrong with the old site, but sometimes stuff needs to change.
As Henry Ford said 'If you ask people what they want, they'll just say 'faster horses''.

Pseudonym99 · 22/08/2014 00:06

What I am saying is, if they do not ask whether people generally think it needs changing, they should not be surprised when people complain. I was not trying to say they should ask individual people's permission!

Pipbin · 22/08/2014 00:28

I do think that they should have said it was happening though. Sudden change isn't good.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/08/2014 08:23

But if people had been prewarmed, poor MNHQ would have had to deal with the whinging and the moaning and threats and demands for weeks before the new site went live, as well as after...

Pipbin · 22/08/2014 08:40

Quite its. It's like when radio 4 say that they are going to change the schedule in some way. Everyone flounces then.

Cherrypi · 22/08/2014 08:47

It would be interesting to see of usage has actually gone down. There doesn't seem to be less threads than usual to me.

Pipbin · 22/08/2014 08:52

What I'm confused by is the number of people complaining about the white background. What colour was it before?

MushroomSoup · 22/08/2014 09:04

I'm on an iPhone and it keeps crashing. Too much scrolling. And there is not enough difference between the highlighted posts and the other posts - white/grey is no good for the fast scrolling.

We need a green back!

honeybeeridiculous · 22/08/2014 09:43

I'm getting used to it on my mobile, it's nice and clear, although I agree, the OPs highlighted colour could do with a bit more oomph

The thing I don't like is there used to be a 'top' button after each thread but that's gone. Do we literally have to scroll through everything now?

Also, I seem to have trouble actually posting anything on my phone, it gets jammed up most times and I just give up,

Maybe MNHQ could come and give us their thoughts etc, they've been abit quiet!

I don't hate it, it just needs a few tweaks in my humble opinion Smile

Pipbin · 22/08/2014 09:51

There is a top button.
If you scroll passed the reply box it is there just below the post and preview buttons.
Also, on an iPhone, tap the bit with the time on at the top and it will scroll to the top.

Mammuzza · 22/08/2014 10:07

I haven't seen it. Not sure why, I'm on an iPad.

However.... MNHQ is better off with a genuine, rather than polite and trying to look on the bright side, response because poor usability can kill even a King of the Market forum stone dead.

Look what happened to ivillage.com. back in ... god must be 7 or 8 years ago by now. One minute huge, thriving boards, then they changed to a new format that allowed them to maximise page views/ad revenue, howls of outrage from the users who now found the boards painful to read/post on. TPTB dug their heels in.... mass exodus. And I do mean mass. The place turned into a ghost town. If the point of the ivillage.com "fucked up new forum format" exercise was to murder their forum community and concentrate on their content pages... it worked. But I am not sure that is MNHQ's goal at all, so if people utterly hate the new for at they are best knowing that before it hurts their bottom line and allows a new kid on the block to take advantage and mop up members doing an exodus.

I am still pissed off at ivillage. My board was fab. And they RUINED IT!

Bastards.

Thank you to whoever explained to me what the number in the grey circle was Smile

What is now frustrating me is that in my lists of threads I'm either on I'm watching I want to delete some of them but can't work out how to do it. On the previous site there was a 'remove' option but it now seems to have disappeared??

bronya · 22/08/2014 13:43

Too bright for me and the advert banner is highly irritating - so I just switched it back to the desktop version for ever more! I don't mind scrolling around my screen a bit and Mumsnet isn't the only site where the desktop version is miles better than the mobile one (or where the mobile one has irritating adverts right in the middle of everything you want to read!).

jay55 · 22/08/2014 13:44

Working hard on something that is not fit for purpose is not admirable.
