To think some people are overreacting about the new mobile site?

I appreciate it is not perfect but I think some posters are being a tad over zealous in their criticism. Someone, probably some people, spent a lot of time working on the layout, and whilst I am sure they appreciate some of the feedback, it can't be pleasant to have tons of posters writing about how awful it is/ how much they hate it/ how they think it's ruined MN for them because they simply HAVE to be able to customise their view in a particular way.

It's a different website layout that doesn't work as well for you - in the big scale of things, how serious a problem can that be?

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 21/08/2014 00:55

Bread I think that's rather interesting.

Whatever has been done to the site probably has revenue at the forefront of considerations.

If people end up with intrusive adverts and clicking on things unintentionally due to changes in functionality the revamp has probably served its purpose.

Snapespotions · 21/08/2014 00:56

Not if it loses users, sooty.

Suzannewithaplan · 21/08/2014 01:15

mumsnet is a business, the site owners don't run it out of the goodness of their hearts, they do it for profit.
It needs traffic to make a profit, if people don't like the new mobile site they'll not use it, revenue will drop.

BreadForBrains · 21/08/2014 01:15

Sooty, it possibly has served its purpose. But they could have been upfront about why they've done it in that case, rather than "ta-daaaahh, here it is, isn't it great?!" - I haven't had a disappearing keyboard in 12 days until this evening. Actually 13 days now really.
Anyway, whatever. I guess most people will get used to it.

Snapespotions · 21/08/2014 01:18

I don't actually see a major difference in the advertising. I just hate how difficult it is to get around. Angry

ICanSeeTheSun · 21/08/2014 01:24

I don't like it and i doubt i will get used to it. I use the mobile site when my DC are awake. the reason is that with pics being posted i don't want to open a thread and for them to see a pic that is not suitable.

I will just not come onto MN unless I can pry my pad from DD hands < doubtful> or they are in bed.

Marrow · 21/08/2014 01:33

Am I being dozy? Everything looks the same to me. I'm using the phone app.

Morloth · 21/08/2014 01:41

The thing is, I really don't like it.

So while I don't get all over excited and upset I just stop using it and wander off elsewhere.

Much better for MN for people to complain than do that.

HeartShapedBox · 21/08/2014 02:51

mines looks the same as it always has Confused

FastWindow · 21/08/2014 03:11

Oh I just found the box for replying. Oh, I don't like it. Everything is just white, and the poster name barely blue. Why change, when the mobile site was user friendly?

LoxleyBarrett · 21/08/2014 03:25

It's migraine inducing for me - too much with the flickering adds on a small screen.

I've reverted to desktop for now, but will probably not bother to use MN on the phone at all, as desk the desktop font is too small for my aging eyes!

mrssprout · 21/08/2014 03:27

I changed over to the desktop site. I really couldn't get on with the new one. I liked to be able to highlight the op & my posts. The new one just didn't seem as easy to use & as I come on here when I have a little bit of time to just sit & relax the last thing I need is to get stressed by not being able to comfortably use the site. Sorry I don't like it Sad

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 21/08/2014 04:19

I've pointed out on the main thread that there doesn't seem to be an option to hide the social share buttons anymore. This will stop me from using it - it just looks so easy to hit one of those buttons now and inadvertently post a thread to FB or Twitter. Given the sensitive nature of some posts on here, it's not an overreaction to say that could be disastrous for some people.

The developers do seem to have abandoned a lot of functionality and no answers are immediately forthcoming on how that will be fixed so that's why they're getting a lot of angry criticism. They haven't done a very good job.

todayisnottheday · 21/08/2014 04:52

Oh don't worry op, this happens every time hq make a change. Everyone gets all shouty and pouty, hq fix a few bits whilst quietly sticking to their guns, most people spend so much time whining posting feedback they start getting used to it, a few get super, extra cross that hq aren't bowing down, life goes back to normal (haven't you seen the "MN isn't like the good old days" threads? ). Some posters will even name change leave!

Hq and all who sail in her are a pretty tough bunch after being battered by us lot for years, they're used to the hysterics by now Grin

Happyringo · 21/08/2014 06:31

I'm using desktop, which has a ridiculously small font on my phone! But is still easier to use than the new mobile site lol...

NickiFury · 21/08/2014 06:32

I agree OP. Those who say "I will leave!" No you won't Wink

ilovesooty · 21/08/2014 06:45

My last post wasn't meant to be a defence of the changes. I agree that it's not helpful to HQ if people leave. I meant to observe that the revamp probably was done with advertising as a priority and not the views of the users Given the patronising assertions that "given time we'll all grow to love it" and "no tears, it's swanky and new" it seems clear to me that they simply expect to tinker with a few things and expect the vast majority to complain for a while then put up and shut up.
TES moderators' response was similar and it killed the site in terms of readers and traffic, but perhaps MNHQ think this site is big enough for similar not to happen. They're probably right, sadly.

Having been encouraged to email HQ recently to follow up a report which was ignored and having received an automated response but no reply I've come to the conclusion that they think they're too big to listen.

ilovesooty · 21/08/2014 06:48

Oh, and the dishonesty of pretending last week's problem was something they were working to put right while not letting on that it was part of testing this is really disappointing.

FreudiansSlipper · 21/08/2014 06:53

I can not work out how to flip the thread hope can still do this as do not always want to read every reply

Seriouslyffs · 21/08/2014 07:00

I liked typing [ and ^ and all the words for symbols. Grin
Which made me think of Mrs Doyle when presented with a new tangled modern alternative to the old mobile site tea making:
Average Mumsnetter's reaction to change

CoreyTrevorLahey · 21/08/2014 07:14

It doesn't seem to work on my phone at all Sad Lots of the images are just not appearing. I can't see an All Messages button and I'm never entirely sure if I've actually posted or not.

Osirus · 21/08/2014 07:38

I'm using desktop as I can't post on new mobile version. Shame, as I do like it!

cosysocks · 21/08/2014 07:49

I just want to be able to customise it so the OP and my posts are highlighted. The ad is still on my iphone, no bouncing around here.
