To think some people are overreacting about the new mobile site?

I appreciate it is not perfect but I think some posters are being a tad over zealous in their criticism. Someone, probably some people, spent a lot of time working on the layout, and whilst I am sure they appreciate some of the feedback, it can't be pleasant to have tons of posters writing about how awful it is/ how much they hate it/ how they think it's ruined MN for them because they simply HAVE to be able to customise their view in a particular way.

It's a different website layout that doesn't work as well for you - in the big scale of things, how serious a problem can that be?

OP posts:
mausmaus · 21/08/2014 08:08

I don't like it. ghe view is really small anc it's difficult to scroll due to the 'buttons' on bottom and fixed advertisement on top.
I have less tgan an inch between those!

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 08:18

YABU. It may be free to use but that doesn't mean people cant complain. MN make money through adverts - if users desert the site in large numbers then advertising revenue will inevitable go down. The mobile site just now is a complete joke - its more than a simple "not working for you" as you state - it is impossible to read and follow threads properly - surely the point of reading a forum! Lots of people just use their phones and not a PC.

The designers should be working on making it usable on a mobile phone - not difficult since the old site worked and flowed fine,

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 08:20

Kitten, the customise button is not working. It only highlights OPs first post and not subsequent posts.

Writerwannabe83 · 21/08/2014 08:29

What I don't like is that when you want to see the threads you are either on or are watching it only gives you the titles as opposed to previously also being able to see the last few replies. It's so annoying having to click on a thread and go to the 'last page' to see if anything new has been added since you last looked - and it's made even more annoying when you see nothing has!!

Also, next to the titles if threads I'm on or watching there is a little feet circle with a number in it - does anyone have any idea what this is meant to be?? I initially thought it was how many pages are in the thread but it isn't.

OwlCapone · 21/08/2014 08:30

I agree, there is a lot of over reaction.

Just like every time they change something (and I include myself in the over reactors at times :o)

GalaxyInMyPants · 21/08/2014 08:35

I've always had the desktop site on my phone but now its changed automatically to this new thing. How can I get it back to the desktop site please?

Cheby · 21/08/2014 08:35

So glad it's not just me who can't get the customise button to work. It's making reading threads much more difficult. And I hate the advert at the top of the screen. It's awful. :(

Balaboosta · 21/08/2014 08:37

I really really don't like it. It's a mess. It looks outdated before it's even begun. Horrible font. Reduced usability. Lose-lose.

Balaboosta · 21/08/2014 08:37

Argghhggghh

(Now THAT's hysteria)

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 08:38

This isn't just a small change or a few glitches in a new system though - its made the mobile site completely unusable.

Galaxy, when I scroll right down the bottom there is usually a bit that says "desktop site" or "mobile site", clicking on that changes it for me.

nannynick · 21/08/2014 08:38

I am actually starting to like it.
I will agree that the font type and size are not quite right, seems harder to read long posts. Though maybe font is down to which mobile browser is used.

ramrod757 · 21/08/2014 08:39

It's absolute gash. One of the worst mobile sites I've used.

houseisfallingdown · 21/08/2014 08:41

I've been a bit confused as mine is still exactly the same as it's always been on iPhone
Why haven't I got a new one??

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 08:41

Why has it changed things customised on desktop site to, dont get it?

I'll try it again later, but I reserve the right to say I don't like it if I don't.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 21/08/2014 08:42

I'm on my PC, it's highlighting posts and is lovely and familiar Grin.

When they smooth out the finer points it'll be ok I hope.

I hate change! Confused

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 08:43

Speak for yourself Kitten - I am finding it impossible to read and follow threads, I dont just read one, flicking back and forward between threads isnt taking you to last posts but the top of each individual pages, thats making it impossible for me.

magpiegin · 21/08/2014 08:43

The hysteria is the same as when they change any website- people are creatures of habit.

They will iron out glitches and sort out the features and in a few weeks everyone will have forgotten what the fuss was about.

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 08:45

I hope so, I just want to be able to read threads on my mobile phone...not too much to ask for. Im not "hysterical", just personally feel its more than a few "glitches".

nannynick · 21/08/2014 08:48

Anyone worked out how to bookmark a message? I can add thread to Watching but can't find bookmark. Maybe by using I'm Watching and Bookmarks it would skip to last read post. I notice that it shows number of unread posts next to thread title.

snoggle · 21/08/2014 08:48

Does anybody know how to get quickly to the end of a thread without scrolling and scrolling?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2014 08:51

Re the advert at the top of the screen. Beta testers were told that MN. needed more advertising revenue and they were testing different ASD placement (no ads just not an option)

I remember we were asked if we wanted the floating ad at the top or the bottom of the page - I said top as because you read down the page much less visually distracting there, as for the fixed ad at the bottom of the page that's easy to ignore.

There are a couple of features missing that shouldn't be, and some things aren't working properly but I too like it.

I agree with the OP that all the posts saying people don't like it, its horrible , change it back, with no useful feedback are both hysterical and pointless. And there is no way MN are going to turn the new site off !

If you have an issue list device used, operating system and version and browser and version with a cvleae description of the issue - that might actual help in getting issue resolved.

I'm also pretty sure that if you accidentally hit one of the social media buttons you will have to confirm.

wannaBe · 21/08/2014 08:52

I am a voiceover user on iPhone and the new layout really messes with accessibility. Mn already has an inaccessible app which they show no interest in fixing, so breaking the site as well isn't going to endear them to me.

Mn is a business. If the customers don't like what they're doing then as a business they've got it wrong.

Mrsjayy · 21/08/2014 08:57

I thought I had broken mumsnet yesterdsay they lay out was all over the place the text was tiny and the tab at the bottom of the screen I couldn't work out what was going on, I switched to desktop site after working out it wasnt broken I use a tablet I can imagine its more of a pain on a phone yabu if folk hate it they hate it.
