to think friends staying shouldn't have two twenty min showers a day

If got some friends staying and they keep having 40 wish mins of showering a day. A part from anything this can't be great for their skin but this is costing 1.60 a day in water with the meter and 1.40 in electric per person. Should I say something? Staying with for a week

What do you all do in the shower for 20mins? Even with long hair it only takes about 10 and surely your not washing your hair twice a day?

OneCabbageTree · 10/08/2014 10:04

TBH if you are paying this much attention to their habits in the bathroom, I wonder if you are cut out for hosting at all, or if you, deep down, don't want them staying anyway?

SirChenjin · 10/08/2014 10:05

They shag jelly - either with someone or by themselves Wink

wheresthelight · 10/08/2014 10:05

2 showers is perfectly normal in this house and if my stepkids are here my stepson can be in the shower for upwards of 40 mins. Not arguing as there will come a day when the shower is considered a foreign object mind!!

Get a grip!!!

Fairylea · 10/08/2014 10:06

Normal here too.

I don't think you can say anything. You'll come across as very tight and weird!

wowfudge · 10/08/2014 10:06

Presumably the OP can hear it. You can in our house - I know DP does it and he is fully aware we have a water meter, but does it anyway as it's his annoying habit.

Salmotrutta · 10/08/2014 10:06

Even with hair washing I never spend more than 10 minutes in the shower!

It's not like a bath where you can lie back and relax with a nice book and the radio and wine.

Flipflops7 · 10/08/2014 10:06

YANBU.

suziepra · 10/08/2014 10:06

The house is small can hear the hissing of the water as one if them leaves the tap running as she cleans her teeth. Yes I don't like it as its a total waste and I have the mist expensive water in the UK and she is unmetered!

OP posts:
wowfudge · 10/08/2014 10:07

To clarify, my pp was about running water whilst cleaning teeth!

Pico2 · 10/08/2014 10:08

Are you sure it costs that much? I'm sure we use more water than that, but our bills aren't that high.

CrocsAreJustPlainUgly · 10/08/2014 10:08

I spend 20 minutes in the shower when I'm not washing my hair!

Maybe ask her to put the plug in so you can use that water to flush the toilets or water plants etc, then that might make you feel better Grin

HappyAgainOneDay · 10/08/2014 10:09

I stay overnight with a friend occasionally. She is a pensioner and has a water meter so I do not run the washbasin hot tap until it becomes hot because it would take at least 2 whole minutes. I timed it once. I don't know how much water that would waste but I can't waste it for her (no indoor plants in the bathroom to top up).

Guests should use their brain (if they have sufficient cells) whenever they stay with friends or relatives. The OP's guests are being greedy IMO.

So £3 pppd and they are there a week? £42 total?

On the face of it, it seems like you are bu. When you add it up, it seems they are!

I dunno

Vinomum · 10/08/2014 10:12

YANBU. Even on the mornings I wash and condition my (longish) hair, shave legs and armpits, cleanse my face, wash my body and then rinse everything off, my shower never lasts more than 5 mins. 20 mins is ridiculous and totally unnecessary.

Thenapoleonofcrime · 10/08/2014 10:13

If you are in the SW I am somewhat sympathetic, the water is very expensive, friends of ours recently lived there and for their first month, their bill was several hundred pounds, they had no idea they couldn't all take 20 min showers a couple of times a day (there were five of them)!

slithytove · 10/08/2014 10:13

turn the water off at the mains after 5 minutes

I sympathise Suziepra

Water very expensive in south west.

suziepra · 10/08/2014 10:15

Yes I live in the sw and water is very expensive. Just because I can afford excessive water usage, doesn't mean I'm happy about it

I was very short of money. Now have a job and living as frugaly as possible to save money so I don't end up in the same state I was in last year when I lost my job

SecretWitch · 10/08/2014 10:17

If it bother's you this much, perhaps you should have a small chat with them. If you say nothing then your visit with them will be ruined while your frustration mounts. I think I agree with Penguin, I would be mortified to know I caused my host such discomfort.

naty1 · 10/08/2014 10:18

It is wasteful though.
Have to say once in the shower i stay in there a while (i dont like getting out if its cold)
But twice a day for no reason.
Have to say it is hot at moment though.
We end up with hosepipe bans or worse if we waste too much water

CalamitouslyWrong · 10/08/2014 10:20

I would feel quite rude insisting in two long showers per day in someone else's house. It's not even just the water and electricity thing; clogging up the bathroom means no one else can use it.
