I haven't watched this in years.

Good lord. Has there ever been a better - or fitter - bit of casting than this?

Much as I love Richard Armitage in North and South...

Darcy's hair alone has me going weak at the knees though the wine may have something to do with that too

Is it? Why did I think it was Chatsworth? Must have been the KK version.

Oh. I forgot. I watched Persuasion under my mozzie net too.

I did other stuff too. But the evenings were very long and dark.

Waltermittythesequel · 08/08/2014 22:27

YABU but only because Rupert Penry-Jones is the only Captain Wentworth.

But you are very much not BU about Firthy as Darcy.

QueenOfThorns · 08/08/2014 22:28

Yep, definitely Lyme Hall. The KK one did use Chatsworth.

Here is Lyme Hall with the giant scary Darcy statue they put in last year Hmm

Oh my god, that is terrifying

That's not a statue of Colin Firth, that's Lou Ferrigno who played the Incredible Hulk.

Chuckle!

OscarWinningActress · 08/08/2014 22:39

Love, love, love Toby Stephens as Mr. Rochester. Just perfect. Michael Fassbender a close second though.

And the version of persuasion with RPJ and Sally Hawkins...absolutely dreamy. That picture makes me weak at the knees.

MarthasHarbour · 08/08/2014 22:40

Georgiana plays the pianoforte. The evil sisters mention Whickham Georgiana faulters. Lizzy jumps up to help her 'how can you play when you have no one to turn the pages'

Cue adoring melting lingering glance between Lizzy and Darcy

LuluJakey1 · 08/08/2014 22:40

Thurlow Susannah Harker looked like she had no shoulders ( sloped away to nothing) and a very thick neck and an odd shaped face. The styles did nothing for her .

Who played Lady. catherine and Lady Ann De Burgh? They were both fab.

januaryjan · 08/08/2014 22:42

Giant scary Darcy could do with a spray tan.

ALittleFaith · 08/08/2014 22:44

Barbara Leigh-Hunt played Lady Catherine

MaxineQuordlepleen · 08/08/2014 22:48

That Sally Hawkins version of Persuasion is truly dire. She manages to look worse rather than better by the end. The only good thing that can be said about it is that it makes me laugh my socks off, it's so bad.

QueenOfThorns · 08/08/2014 22:48

Here's a close-up. Don't have nightmares!

Colin Firth as Mr Darcy
Flipflops7 · 08/08/2014 22:49

I'm with isthisanacidtest, I find Colin a bit wooden ...

Jennifer Ehle well cast though. Don't find KK convincing in period roles, she is so NOW.

Going back a bit, Michael Jayston was a great Mr Rochester.

MaxineQuordlepleen · 08/08/2014 22:50

Susannah Harker is very beautiful but I think she was pregnant and then gave birth during filming and so looks different shapes at times!

microcosmia · 08/08/2014 23:14

I did this in school too and lived it ever since. Our teacher showedvos the film with Laurence Olivier as D'Arcy and it made zero impact on us. I wish we could have seen the Firth version but I'm not sure she could cope with 25 infatuated girls

microcosmia · 08/08/2014 23:15

I loved it not lived it (I wish)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/08/2014 23:18

I HATE Colin Firth as Darcy. In fact, I HATE that production generally.

I realise that I am in a minority here, but I can't stand it - except the guy playing Mr Collins, who is excellent.

januaryjan · 08/08/2014 23:18

The 1980's (I think BBC but not sure) version of Pride and Prejudice with Elizabeth Garvie was very good. David Rintoul was a brilliant Darcy (had to google his name as I forgot it) and E Garvie played the part of Elizabeth/Lizzie to perfection.

The water is obviously freezing if the expression of the giant scary Darcy doll is anything to go by..:))

bialystockandbloom · 08/08/2014 23:21

Ooh what a lovely thread! Yes marthasharbour the exchange of looks when she's at the piano is just melting.

But WTAF with that statue Shock Shock Really wish I hadn't seen that! Is that for real?!

Namechangearoonie123 · 08/08/2014 23:21

Martin Sheen as President Bartlett

Is AMAZEBALLS

Just watching one now.

ApolloniaVitelliCorleone · 08/08/2014 23:28

Yanbu I refuse to watch anyone else even try to do this part. I have the boxset and watch once a year every year. Pond scene anyone???

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 09/08/2014 02:29

Janes from P&P are never good looking enough.
Harriettes from Emma are never good looking enough.

HereBeHubbubs · 09/08/2014 02:58

Does anyone remember Firth very early on in Another Country, with a young Rupert Everett and Cary Elwes? It was supposed to be about The Guy Burgess spy affair but the film was all-treacle-for-public-schoolboys-fest in a Merchant Ivory stylee.

Firth played a grumpy Marxist student and seems to have been horrendously typecast ever since. Wasn't he similarly glum in that film about single fathers, The English Patient, Love Actually, Girl With A Pearl Earring, ... Etc

Usually brooding is highly tantalising, and on paper he would make a good Heathcliff, but he just seems a bit of a wet fish, all sighs and no substance.
I mean, I agree he was a perfect Darcy, but the chemistry seemed entirely sparked by Jennifer.

Having said that, my own boyfriend has that irresistible puppy dog eyed look about him which quite simply makes you want to be sternly reprimanded by him GrinBlush so I do appreciate how Firth would be considered attractive in that respect.
