Colin Firth as Mr Darcy

I haven't watched this in years.

Good lord. Has there ever been a better - or fitter - bit of casting than this?

Much as I love Richard Armitage in North and South...

Darcy's hair alone has me going weak at the knees though the wine may have something to do with that too

I agree with most of you, Colin Firth is the ultimate Darcy and Matthew Mcfadyen was a travesty!

Eric and Alcide in True Blood are amazing as well. Toby Stephens is my Rochester of choice, he made me come over all unnecessary stomping around in his big boots Grin

I'd like to throw in Sean Bean as Mellors in Lady Chatterley as a suggestion, but I think CF is probably the winner.

Thurlow · 08/08/2014 21:52

Definitely overdue. Am currently very happy that OH is on lates and nights for the next few days. I'm going to finish watching this, and then I'm going to watch North & South. Which wins with that "I don't wish to marry you to possess you, I wish to marry you because I love you" line. And that amount of staring out of windows he does.

Me too CatKisser

LEMmingaround · 08/08/2014 21:53

Colin is mine. I have concocted a plan and everything.

Thurlow · 08/08/2014 21:54

Queen, if we're throwing Sean Bean in then it has to be Sharpe.

I spent my teenage summer holidays reading P&P, Jane Eyre, shed loads of Mills & Boon, and Sharpe. I now have a rather strange idea of what my ideal man is like. Basically Sharpe with a bit more sex...

Lady Catherine is my heroine!

ImperialBlether · 08/08/2014 21:55

Oh I thought your thread was about how awful Colin Firth was and how unsuitable he was for Darcy.

I came on here to agree with you.

Grin
Thurlow · 08/08/2014 21:55

Martha, there is a look Lady Catherine gives Elizabeth during their first dinner which is just immense. Best look ever on telly. Little frowny side eyes.

Fassbender is a weirdy creep and I don't like him. Toby Stephens was a cracking Rochester and I loved the actress who played his jane.
Richard armitage in north and south is my runner up all time favourite costume drama crush but Colin firth is, and always will be, number one.

MamaMary · 08/08/2014 21:56

Surely William Hurt was the best Rochester ever despite his American accent

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 08/08/2014 21:57

I still can't believe it was TWENTY years ago!

I love Mrs Bennett and Lydia and Mary and Kitty in the JE/CF version too but agree with PP about Jane being much netter played by Ros. Pike. I want to watch all of them now!

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 08/08/2014 21:58

Jane was the only thing wrong with that adaptation. Too plain, too broad, too old, too simpering. No charisma.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 08/08/2014 21:58

Now. Who did we like better as Emma - Kate Beckinsale or Gwennie?

HermioneWeasley · 08/08/2014 21:58

1). You are all wrong about other Rochesters being superior to the Fassbender
2). Alexander Skarsgard is indeed perfectly cast as Eric
3) much as I love Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, the comic book character is short and stocky (not that I'm complaining)
4) Colin Firth as Darcy is dreamy
5) the entire cast of GWTW is perfect

Damn, we really need a "gavel" emoticon

LadyRubyPenhaligon · 08/08/2014 21:59

Beccajoh me! I do!
This is one of my absolute faves adored the book as a teen and couldn't wait for this to appear on bbc in the 90s there was a long wait for it and I loved it. Later on spent many a lovely weekend watching it all whilst pregnant and bed bound with bleeds.

Thurlow · 08/08/2014 21:59

The thing is, Susannah Harker is a gorgeous woman but the hairstyles and clothes didn't really suit her and made her face all funny.

DilysMoon · 08/08/2014 21:59

Firth is the only Darcy imoGrin Also agree re Toby Stephens as Rochester. I can feel a dvd weekend coming on....

Gwyneth was simply dreadful as Emma. And Toni Collette was a travesty as Harriet.

Romola Garai was the best Emma.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 08/08/2014 22:00

Or Alicia Silverstone from Clueless Grin

I used to have this picture above my desk at work. Had no shame.

I wanted to like that BBC Emma with Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller because, you know, it's Jonny Lee Miller. But it was utter shite.

OP posts:
HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 08/08/2014 22:02

Romola Garai - was that a BBC one?
