Colin Firth as Mr Darcy

I haven't watched this in years.

Good lord. Has there ever been a better - or fitter - bit of casting than this?

Much as I love Richard Armitage in North and South...

Darcy's hair alone has me going weak at the knees though the wine may have something to do with that too

Colin Firth as Darcy is the beginning and the end of delight Wink. I still have the box set and re watch every year! As a disclaimer - I was of the age that studied Pride and Prejudice for 'O' Level and re-read it every year until the Colin Firth drama series version was released. It has always been my guilty pleasure since I was 14 with a growing understanding of the social politics and subtle nuances as I got older.

If they made a new version, who would you choose for Darcy?

Think you might be isitanacidtest Grin

beccajoh · 08/08/2014 21:33

It's 20 years ago now, isn't it? I was in my teens when CF played Mr Darcy. Nothing can beat it!

believeintheshield · 08/08/2014 21:33

I love the casting in that version - not a single person wrong IMO. I watched it when it first aired in 95 when I was 8, and it's always been perfect to me. Love the chemistry between JE and CF.

londonrach · 08/08/2014 21:33

Dh is taller than him. Saw him in street once and sent dh to stand behind him. (Proud). He seemed a really nice guy although didn't talk to him, just smiled... (And fainted)

beccajoh · 08/08/2014 21:34

I always thought Lizzie and Colonel Fitzwilliam would have been a better match.

isthisanacidtest · 08/08/2014 21:34

Grin I'll leave him to you lot then

MrsWedgeAntilles · 08/08/2014 21:34

I was only 17 when Mr Darcy emerged from the pond so I've been imprinted like baby duckling.
I'm of to check out Michael Fassbender as Rochester.

BrandyAlexander · 08/08/2014 21:34

What channel is it on? Every couple of years I used to do a whole weekend of watching the box set. He is just divine.

Thurlow · 08/08/2014 21:34

Lizzie and Colonel Fitzwilliam would have been a good alternative story.

I don't think I could cast it again now. Unless it was Richard Armitage Grin

I preferred Toby Stephens as Rochester

He is perfection!

And a very big yes to Viggo Mortenson as Aragorn. swoon

CatKisser · 08/08/2014 21:35

I felt so sorry for Fitzwilliam - he looked so sad at the wedding!

Muskey · 08/08/2014 21:36

Given the comments on here ithisanacidtest I don't think there is going to be much left of him

Andcake · 08/08/2014 21:37

Brilliant - I can't see any other version! I want to watch it now!

ALittleFaith · 08/08/2014 21:40

Oh yes. Just wonderful! His eyes are lovely. I watched it while I was in early labour, kept me occupied. Wonderful casting full stop.

beccajoh · 08/08/2014 21:41

Has anyone else watched it so many times they know most of the script off by heart Blush

FamiliesShareGerms · 08/08/2014 21:41

I think all the casting in the Andrew Davies P&P is spot on, especially Mr and Mrs Bennett.

Other perfect casting - Hugh Jackman as Wolverine; Alan Cummings in X Men; the bloke who plays Alcide in True Blood

Thurlow · 08/08/2014 21:42

So it turns out that women really do like a mean and moody man who just needs the love of a good woman Grin

Though if you had a man like Darcy, and you cheered him up, then he'd stop glowering at everyone, and that wouldn't be good, would it?

OP posts:
Thurlow · 08/08/2014 21:42

No no no, Families - Alcide may be good casting but Eric is much better!

I second Toby Stephens as a better Rochester...
Timothy Dalton is way up there too.

M. Fassbender as Rochester just didn't do it for me.

Don't get the swoon-a-rama with Colin Firth either to be honest. Liked him in Bridget Jones though.

CatKisser · 08/08/2014 21:48

beccajoh me! Blush

hamptoncourt · 08/08/2014 21:50

No no no! Matthew McFayden is easily the sexiest Darcy. Colin Firth doesn't do it for me at all I am afraid.

I am with muskey re Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn - SWOON!!

And I liked Rupert PJ in Persuasion - the kiss right at the end. Oh my dear Lord!

AtYourCervix · 08/08/2014 21:50

It's almost a year since I last watched P&P. In a very basic guesthouse. In the middle of Africa. Under a mozzie net. I'm well overdue a re-watch.

MaxineQuordlepleen · 08/08/2014 21:52

Yer all deluded. Matthew MacFadyen is much better. I like Colin Firth but he's like a tree in this. MM and KK have ten times more chemistry, they even manage to redeem the terrible script.
