In schools, local communities, pro ISIS demonstrations etc. with Muslim leaders remaining silent.

Is this something new or was it always there right under the surface?

Have we been to tolerant to people who openly reject our values and want to overthrow our society?

*95% I can argue, I however cannot count. Grin

greeneggsandjam · 02/08/2014 21:17

I am also keen to know why you find it hard to believe that Muslims are the main givers of charity in the Uk when compared to other religions/non religious people such as atheists.

Pumpkinpositive · 02/08/2014 21:17

I think its ridiculous if we went to their country and practiced Christianity we would probably be hung drawn and quartered!

Really? Where? You might find an isolated one or two but it's hardly the norm in Muslim countries.

SqueakySqueak · 02/08/2014 21:27

It's like the people who say "I think we should prevent benefit claimants from having children." Strangely enough this is absolutely impossible without an eugenics regime to rival 1920s America or 1930s Germany. Kicking UK citizens out for their politics being wrong is equivalent and as impossible and stupid.

They are very "subtly" doing that in the US by offering free birth control, and encouraging women to take it that make below a certain amount.

ConstantCraving · 02/08/2014 21:39

Poor Dik - Zaz is getting all the attention and no one's rising to the torygraph links.

MistressMia · 02/08/2014 21:48

It seems to me on any thread about Islam that there's always a rush of posters willing to confront the Western bigots (and some of them are, although by no means all) and a decided unwillingness by those same defenders to confront Islamic bigotry and intolerance.

Consequently Islam has had and continues to have a free pass. This thread looks to be going the same way.

andsmile · 02/08/2014 21:53

I wishmore confrontation included a bit of education

Justanotherlurker · 02/08/2014 21:57

Ok as my name suggests I'm a lurker who would be considered a troll, with regards to the op I don't think it's more prevalent it's more a case of the media finding the latest bogey man and gas lighting minor issues, however...

When the initial school Trojan report was reported there where many posts at how abhorrent people where for believing this, calls of racist and not thinking of the parents who have been dragged into it, since it has been proven the Trojan horse was real and some of the parents where complicit there has been no comments or threads across the board.

Islamaphobia is a scourge on society as is any form of racism, but to try and downplay the fear of extremists as racist is juvenile.

sarahquilt · 02/08/2014 21:58

Nancy no offence but I don't think catholic priests have been the only paedophiles in the last 50 years and you are incredibly naive if you believe that. OP there is not a massive increase in extremism. Stop falling prey to fear mongering.

maddening · 02/08/2014 22:08

Part of the problem when discussing this topic is that all muslims seem to be categorised under the same banner so it becomes an argument re racism - but surely any religion taken to it's extreme is worrying - eg Christian cults. But when the religion taken to it's extreme or to a fundamentalist level where the message is that no other religion should be allowed to exist and advocation of violence to enable this then surely that is against "our values" in that as a society we have freedom of speech, the right to practice whichever religion you wish and to do so peacefully etc etc - fundamentalism and extremism is scary in any religion but globally fundamental islamism holds very violent and intolerant views.

and this does not mean that all the downfalls of any other nation or religion on the globe are irrelevant - surely they are mutually exclusive - because other religons have their problems it does not mean that this can not be discussed

MistressMia · 02/08/2014 22:33

OP there is not a massive increase in extremism. Stop falling prey to fear mongering

..... but there is. The muslim community have been seeing it since the 80's when extremist first started targeting moderate mosques.

I have friends who became what we called 'fundos'.... fundamentalists who started to believe in the idea of a global Islamic Caliphate.

It's the young who adopt the face veil, not my mothers generation who never even wore a headscarf. Those early adopters are now school governors pushing for Islamic curriculums and separatism.

They are the main aggressors in the current wave of anti-Semitic attacks in Western Europe. The ones who go abroad to fight with ISIS. The ones who see nothing wrong in calling for killing or actually killing their critics or anybody else that they feel has insulted Islam such as Danish cartoonists or Dutch filmmakers. The ones who are emboldened to butcher a soldier in broad daylight on the streets of London or blow up a tube train.

They are attempting to drag the country I originate from Pakistan, back to the middle ages by daily violence and terror, just like they did in Afghanistan.

Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Syria, Kenya, Somalia, Nigeria and many others... all blighted by ever increasing rising Islamic extremism.

zazA09Jane · 02/08/2014 23:56

ok so what about the muslim march through Luton two years ago where hundreds of muslims marched through the streets shouting British police burn in hell? and when Stacey Dooley questioned them they were calling her a whore because she was wearing a summer dress and not covering her ancles? I suppose thats okay aswell is it? comming into england and judging everyone just because they dont live like they do?

greeneggsandjam · 03/08/2014 00:08

Firstly, the group of people marching up the street shouting 'British Police go to hell' and the likes were a very small amount of people all things considered. I think they were part of al muhajirun but I could be wrong. They are a fairly extreme group so it was quite likely that Stacey Dooley wandering alongside them would get some kid of comment.

The average Muslim does not act like that and would not be coming out with silly comments like that. The girl saying all of that to her was obviously from England so she hadn't 'come into England and started judging people'. I would even go so far as to say she was probably a revert, listening to the way she spoke on camera.

Don't judge all Muslims by little snippets like this, just as we wouldn't judge 'English' people by a march by some National Front group.

MorphineDreams · 03/08/2014 00:16

People need to stop shutting down valid debates by claiming islamophobia

I think it certainly seems to be on the rise, partly with ISIS coming forth and causing mayhem.

MorphineDreams · 03/08/2014 00:17

Funnily enough, we can have debates about Catholics preaching outside anti-abortion clinics and that's fine. We don't get all this 'not all Catholics are like this'. Of course not all Catholics are the same, nor are all Muslims, but we can still speak about what extremists do.

greeneggsandjam · 03/08/2014 00:23

ZazA09 seems to have issues with all Muslims, whether they are buying baby clothes with Eid written on them in Asda or marching down the street shouting a load of nonsense. They are all the same to her, coming into England to change its ways.

And the rise of Muslim extremists is terrifying the muslim community. They are acknowledging it, so why can't we.

These extremists infuriate me because don't they actually realise they're making the lives of innocent Islamic folk so much more difficult and more likely to experience prejudice.

"I would even go so far as to say she was probably a revert, listening to the way she spoke on camera."

Slightly off-topic but just had to comment on this term. It is so hugely offensive and typifies the arrogance and supremacy of Islam. To regard everyone as having been born as Muslim such that when they change their religion to Islam they revert rather then convert....... WTF !

greeneggsandjam · 03/08/2014 01:24

People who become Muslim, who chose Islam generally refer to themselves as reverts. I have no idea why you are offended by that.

MistressMia · 03/08/2014 01:31

They get told to refer to themselves as reverts because of this:

The Prophet Muhammad said, "No babe is born but upon Fitra (as a Muslim). It is his parents who make him a Jew or a Christian or a Polytheist." (Sahih Muslim, Book 033, Number 6426)

It is one of the first things I remember being taught by the maulvi.

Really surprised that as a muslim, you didn't know the background to this.

greeneggsandjam · 03/08/2014 01:35

I am more than aware of the reasons for calling oneself or referring to someone as a revert. I still have no idea what you find offensive about it.

I am more surprised that you are choosing to make an issue about it.

greeneggsandjam · 03/08/2014 01:37

What would you like someone who chose Islam to refer to themselves as out of interest? Other than a Muslim obviously.

redrubyindigo · 03/08/2014 01:56

Just read through this thread with such sadness.

All these arguments over which God is right.

I am an agonist.

Is there only one God? I am confused. Or many?

I just think we are a few fleas arguing over who owns the dog we live on.

Have I just offended someone?

Probably.
