AIBU, to be concerned about increasing anti-semitism throughout Europe

Yesterday's Sunday Times had a number of articles about increased anti-semitism in the UK. Same is happening in the Netherlands and even more so in France and Germany.

There isn't this enormous great gulf between anti-zionism and anti-semitism that so many posters on Mumsnet seem determined to pretend.
Why would you NOT believe in the state of Israel YET believe in a Palestinian state, unless you didn't have problems with Jewish people having a state?

(FWIW I believe in a two-state solution)

Green Eggs and Ham
I think it is interesting that your number 1 point as an issue is the rise of extreme Islam being a possibly contributing factor to attacks on Jewish people and your point number 3 being the actions of Israel. I think I would really be swapping these points around!

Really? I see - the 150,000 recent dead in Syria (as human beings I expect you and Mumble are deeply concerned about this), the bloody revolutions and the rise of Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and Libya, the rise of ISIS, the Taliban, all down to the actions of Israel?
Fucking hell.

"There isn't this enormous great gulf between anti-zionism and anti-semitism that so many posters on Mumsnet seem determined to pretend."

Are we allowed to criticise the actions of the State of Israel?

JohnFarleysRuskin · 29/07/2014 16:30

Yes, (when I'm in charge,) yes. They should be criticized. I want them to stop this.

You agreed with other posters that those seeking a more balanced argument are Hasbara trolls. this is what you find on a quick google of the term. And I don't want your money, thanks.

Another thread derailed by a change of subject.

Anti semitism is exactly why Israel does exist and indeed why it defends it's boarders so harshly - it is the only country where Jews are not persecuted and the rise of anti semitism will force more Jews to Israel. I believe in Israel as a home for the Jewish people, all 20,000 sq km of it (about the size of Wales).

JohnFarleysRuskin · 29/07/2014 16:40

Re. On the question of criticism, I er rather like my post of 10.46. am.

To call long term mumsnetters Hasboro(?) trolls is pretty low I think. I'd never heard the term, had to google it, and was linked to a very nasty David Icke site full of how evil Jews are and that this is one of their dirty tactics.

PigletJohn · 29/07/2014 16:41

And I will pay TWO thousand pounds to anyone who has ever seen me post, or recommend, or even view (until 30 seconds ago) Thunderbummums disgusting link.

To return to subject of thread, YADNBU

ThunderbumsMum · 29/07/2014 16:42

Don't pretend now that you think it's disgusting. You were agreeing about Hasbara trolls before. Perhaps you would prefer this one instead

Backinthering · 29/07/2014 16:47

Thunderbum you need to get a grip.

LastTango · 29/07/2014 16:49

3. The actions of Israel.

Don't you mean Hamas trying to wipe out Israel?

Backinthering · 29/07/2014 16:51

I would imagine she means Israels killing of civilians.

LastTango · 29/07/2014 16:53

I repeat.......'Hamas trying to wipe out Israel' !!

Mintyy · 29/07/2014 16:55

Yes, you really do.

Yes, Hamas exists to wipe Israel off of the face I the earth, doesn't recognise Israel as a country. No hope
For peace until Palestine had a government that is willing to talk - and now I'm derailing the thread, sorry

Backinthering · 29/07/2014 16:59

Right now, Israel is doing quite a good job of wiping Gaza off the face of the earth. But that's perfectly fine apparently. Because of what Hamas might do.

JanineStHubbins · 29/07/2014 17:02

I was going to post the same thing - if you look at the changes in boundaries since the 1940s, Israel is doing a pretty good job of wiping out Palestine.

IceBeing · 29/07/2014 17:03

good grief.

So can someone clear up for me whether or not it is possible to criticise the actions of the Israeli government without being anti-semitic?

I seems that everyone can agree that violence against British Jews committed because people are against the actions of the Israeli government is completely inappropriate and racist to boot.

How is it not then equally racist to assume that any criticism an individual may have of the Israeli government is in fact directed at all Jews and hence anti-semitic?

SolomanDaisy · 29/07/2014 17:11

Of course it's possible to criticise the actions of the Israeli government and not be anti Semitic. It's just that coincidentally some of the critics are also anti Semites, and it shows.

PigletJohn · 29/07/2014 17:15

how do you think you can recognise the difference (if at all)?
