If I describe my job, could you tell me what you think my pay might be/what would be fair remuneration?

Highly specialised role within a not-for-profit sector
Most jobs in London/south of UK, so had to relocate to get into the industry
Required to travel overseas 4-6 times per year
Manage a small team, which is the department for the whole company
Present our product to international clients; most of our business is in Asia
High level of expertise and 8 years of experience in the industry
Take part in several senior committees within the company
Daily international meetings via conference
Originate, authorise, and sign contracts
Report on trends, achieve a set target revenue (increasing every year despite a difficult market)

High academic qualifications are required and many colleagues are Oxbridge/Ivy League educated.

And... out of curiosity, what is your profession and do you feel adequately compensated for your time?

That basically sums it up!

Plenty of not-for profit orgs pay a lot more than that for that type of work. My dh has always worked in the third sector and earns way more. You need to change jobs.

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 21:29

So you stay put.knowing this make you feel undervalued, underpaid
Or you look for another better paid job in corporate publishing

Marylou2 · 24/07/2014 21:35

100k? May a bit less as Not for profit.

upyourninja · 24/07/2014 21:37

Now you're just teasing marylou

Just heard my brother (completely different industry) has taken a new job with a 50% pay rise. I think it may be a sign :D

I am going to trawl through the job boards now.

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 21:47

Join recruitment agy
But don't just rely on ads, network in industry,up your linked in profile
You've been complacent too long, time to consider your skills, competencies and move

PrimalLass · 24/07/2014 21:51

I also work in publishing. I had a semi ok salary but there are no jobs here now (Scotland). I work freelance but want a move into something different.

upyourninja · 24/07/2014 21:53

Agreed. I have been working on LinkedIn for a while. I also have some contacts who have said they'd love to find me a job with their new companies but I've never investigated how serious that is. I should at least test the water there I think.

Perhaps look into bid/tender writing? Better paid, and values commercial sense and editorial skills.

RickyDinkPanther · 24/07/2014 22:25

That's why I left publishing. There are so many people who want to work in publishing so they get away with paying peanuts. Sad

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 22:32

Ive always thought if publishing as full of nice mc grads, dint need money
Like saying they work in publishing, vaguely literary.in fact bulk do sales
And pays hee haw because so many will work for the salary.

MissDuke · 24/07/2014 22:46

I have decided its not all about money. I was on £32k in the public sector, doing a very boring job with little responsibility - far less than you have. I have left and am at uni studying midwifery - a career that will see me on a much lower salary for a long time until I get up the scale. Ah well, I flipping love it! As you enjoy your job, I wouldn't get too worried about the salary but you are right to negotiate - good luck!

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 22:56

But duke, you'll end up in a career with structure, progression, chance earn well
Op in job with minimal prospects, shes been languishing 8yr.not totally happy, badly paid
Money does matter.you've taken career change, but will quickly exceed wage you gave up. Op is stuck not earning well,no chance salary increase

bubalou · 24/07/2014 23:05

I often get the usual 'is there something better out there' feeling.

After reading these I am very grateful and clinging on to my at home job that allows me to make my own hours, earn good money on a per hourly basis with no free overtime expected and involves only a laptop.

No I'm not a porn site hostess. Haha

Scottishmummy, I might have given the wrong impression at some stage - I've been in my company for 8 years, but I've had three promotions in that time and moved from one dept to another. But there have been promotion and pay rise promises for a while now which haven't materialised. Fresh promises were made this time around, and indeed there have been a lot of changes lately, but I have resolved that I need to start shaking things up a bit so I don't find myself with the same complaints in 12 months.

upyourninja · 24/07/2014 23:13

Good luck with your new career miss duke - how wonderful Smile

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 23:17

Oh apologies for getting it wrong

upyourninja · 24/07/2014 23:30

Tsk, how could you not keep up with the minutiae from the hundreds of posts I've made on the thread Grin

Lots to think about. Thanks MNers.

Desertrunner · 25/07/2014 00:16

What sort of job would you ideally like? I have a recruitment business and we cover media and publishing. Mostly newspapers and magazines tho, not books. Pm me if you like.

RainbowB7 · 25/07/2014 00:30

That sounds really low and I think you should be able to get a better salary elsewhere as you have so many years of experience! I know grads in publishing sales with maybe 3 or 4 years exp and not as much responsibility as you who are on around £30k.

geekgirl78 · 25/07/2014 00:36

Erm, I retrained at 30, and now earn 60K in the public sector, albeit in inner-London, at 35. It's stressful but I do get lovely long holidays...., if you are oxbridge (and I was merely Russell Group - with a doctorate) they will rip your arm off I'd imagine

LeoandBoosmum · 25/07/2014 00:46

I've not looked at the other answers but I'd have guessed between 40 thousand plus expenses.... Haven't read whole thread, did you tell us?

OneLittleToddleTerror · 25/07/2014 04:59

geekgirl but London salary is much higher. The colleagues who left for London (ie the banks) usually go from £30k to £60k. We are in the outer south east, and I believe the OP is outside the inner commuter belt too.
