If I describe my job, could you tell me what you think my pay might be/what would be fair remuneration?

Highly specialised role within a not-for-profit sector
Most jobs in London/south of UK, so had to relocate to get into the industry
Required to travel overseas 4-6 times per year
Manage a small team, which is the department for the whole company
Present our product to international clients; most of our business is in Asia
High level of expertise and 8 years of experience in the industry
Take part in several senior committees within the company
Daily international meetings via conference
Originate, authorise, and sign contracts
Report on trends, achieve a set target revenue (increasing every year despite a difficult market)

High academic qualifications are required and many colleagues are Oxbridge/Ivy League educated.

And... out of curiosity, what is your profession and do you feel adequately compensated for your time?

£55k you work in retail or sales

WickedWitchoftheNorthWest · 24/07/2014 19:31

30k

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 19:32

I mean retail/sales for charity. Piching campaigns, travelling to see vendors

mcdog · 24/07/2014 19:32

Come on!!!!!!!!!

Grumpyoldblonde · 24/07/2014 19:32

Are you a member of the Royal family?

JaneParker · 24/07/2014 19:34

£25k. You only go into the not for profit sector if you want very very low pay even in London or you have a private income or you are not attracted to or unable to get jobs which pay better.

bigkidsdidit · 24/07/2014 19:34

45k I reckon in not for profit

macdoodle · 24/07/2014 19:35

It comes down to responsibility imo, does the buck stop with you, if not then not more than 30k.

FidelineAndBombazine · 24/07/2014 19:35

Wind up

SleepRefugee · 24/07/2014 19:35

25-28k is my guess.

Viviennemary · 24/07/2014 19:35

Is it anything to do with water or global warming. This is like what's my line!

upyourninja · 24/07/2014 19:36

Ok. I shall confess.

Publishing sector, so competitive but not generally very well paid.

I earn just a fraction less than the national average, though it tips over with my bonus. Not London, but some very expensive house prices here and cost of living is expensive.

I asked because I do think I'm underpaid. I'm addressing it with our director and I will have a salary review next year. Every salary study for my industry I've ever seen puts me at the bottom of the range for the role, particularly with my experience. I forgot to mention that it's generally expected that I will be available outside working hours for queries, but that's a company culture thing which we are trying to redress.

And I threw the Oxbridge/Ivy League thing (it is true though) because in my experience it certainly doesn't come with pay benefits, but probably does help with getting interviews in the first place. I may be taking on a lot more next year and I want to be in a position to negotiate. Or figure out if I should move industry.

From what some of you are saying, I really think I should! You have some interesting experience there folk Wink

FidelineAndBombazine · 24/07/2014 19:37

But what's the salary?!

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 19:38

JD isn't accurate reflection of ability or worth
Ive seen some JD in press that big up things.like the apprentice contestants do
Theyre masters at embellishing the ordinary

mcdog · 24/07/2014 19:38

Well that clears it up totally Hmm

LRDtheFeministDragon · 24/07/2014 19:38

Good luck asking for more. Smile

People do say women tend to be underpaid partly because we don't ask for more.

The only reason I mentioned about the Oxbridge/Ivy league thing not necessarily meaning lots of money is that I think there is a certain kind of person who assumes if you push your child to apply there, they will walk into a 25k job straight out of university without lifting a finger and, frankly, it annoys me! It's no reflection on you, though.

My mate is in publishing and sounds similar to you, and I think she earns about 30k although I am getting that from casual conversations rather than her stating the figure, as we don't usually talk about it. She is in London, though.

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 19:39

You work in publishing sales?

upyourninja · 24/07/2014 19:39

And to answer a few cross posts, yes, I'm almost maddeningly left to my own devices and problems are mine to deal with.

I love my job but I think it's time to negotiate up a bit.

Grin Grin Grin At the idea I 'chose' to get into not for profit. Love my job and it has its perks, but when I started working jobs were very very hard to come by. Even harder now.

OhMyArsingGodInABox · 24/07/2014 19:39

But what's the salary?

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 24/07/2014 19:39

Are you going to look for another job then?

upyourninja · 24/07/2014 19:40

LRD I agree completely - at 18 when I got in to Oxbridge I had some very lofty dreams for myself!

Sorry, national average in in UKand it is £26.5k this year.

OP posts:
fanjobiscuits · 24/07/2014 19:41

Scottishmummy, it's a branch of sales. Subsidiary rights, so intellectual property.

Oh finally
