To think that Saville was NEVER a "Much loved family favourite"???

Sorry to start a thread about this sick, awful animal but they just said on Radio 4 that he was a much loved family favourite.

I CLEARLY remember watching him on Jim'l Fix It and thinking "Oh he's HORRIBLE!"

I hated him...he was frightening and I could see that some children were very scared of him on that show.

Did ANYONE actually enjoy his "performances" and appearances?? I don't think so.

I think the establishment kept him where he was...on TV and in positions of power because he knew too much about THEIR activities.

And it's funny how it all came out once he was dead and couldn't name anyone else.

I challenge anyone to think back and remember how much they "loved" him at the time before his activities were known.

Well of course watching him back now he seems very odd indeed to say the least.

However, when I was a kid I loved Jim'll Fix it and everyone thought how marvellous he was with all the charity work he did.

But yeah, I think at that time a lot of people did love him to be honest.

I loved watching Jim'll fix it, I desperately wanted to go on it and meet Shakin Stevens but I never bothered to write a letter. Many many children did though and I don't remember watching it and thinking there was anything sinister going on. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth now but the show was very pulopular amongst me and my friends.

Really? I remember so clearly one particular episode where he rebuked a child who was acting a bit sullen..read scared.....and he told her off! the kid looked frightened and it upset me then as I could relate to the child...I never liked him even when I was small.

I used to love the "fixes" when people's dreams came true, but can clearly remember hiding behind a cushion when JS came on. He made me very uncomfortable, yet TV was full of people doing impressions of him, he was on lots of shows. All cringeworthy.

Never in my family. Even without the benefit of hindsight we always thought he was dodgy and cringesome and I'm surprised that wasn't the general consensus.

I love Jim'll Fix It too. And remember watching it with my sister!

I absolutely loved jim'll fix it as a child. I had no incline whatsoever there was anything wrong but then I only saw him on tv. He was certainly a household name and I think many people did really like him. He clearly used that to his vile advantage.

As a child i thought he was fine and was despertae to be on jim'll fix it.
it was only lots later i began to see how creepy he was and it was only after the Loius Theroux program he really started to turn my stomache.

I loved the show and the purpose of it, but didn't like Savile himself. Even then as a child I was aware that he made his audience, and me, uncomfortable. We underestimate childrens' instincts I think.

I never watched him as a kid but don't remember being scared as such, just thought he was weird and dull. I can't imagine how he became such a successful presenter - he wasn't remotely funny or witty or attractive or anything pleasant at all really.

The stories in the paper today are just stomach turning. It's beyond belief that he got away with it for so long

I always hated him. I contributed to a thread on here a couple of years ago about what a horrible perv he was, and was completely torn apart by the Savile fans who loved his charitable works more than the blindingly obvious truth.

I mentioned the darker reports - the morgue stuff - and some posters were apoplectic.

So I guess he was much loved by some.

MrsCakes you were like me then....odd that some children didn;t notice his creepiness and others did.

All these people saying they loved Jim'll Fix It reminds me of the stereotypical bad man luring children with bribes of sweets and puppies.

'Fraid I have to agree with Betty and the others. I really enjoyed Jim'll Fix It as a child and saw nothing sinister about it. It is easy with hind sight to say "Oo he always looked like a creepy git" but honestly at the time it would never have crossed my mind that anything was wrong.

I was a child of the 60s and I think he was seen as a bit of a national treasure in those days so I agree with Betty. I don't remember particularly liking or disliking him: he just was.

Looking back, you can see all sorts of creepiness but at the time I think a lot of people (those who hadn't had the misfortune to encounter him in person) just accepted him as that rather eccentric DJ bloke who did a lot of charity work.

I also think in those days people on the telly seemed more remote than they do now and were maybe less likely to have their motives questioned?

5Foot I couldn't have put a name on why I hated him...I didn't have the words or knowledge but in basic terms he frightened me....I thought he was scary....like the teachers at my school who shouted....I "knew" that he was bad in some way.

Nigella I don't think that poster was excusing him but pointing out why when he was alive, he had fans.

I do sort of get what you're saying, OP. I never liked the man although he seemed to be a continual presence on television as I was growing up - but I never picked up a sinister vibe, at the time.

It was only with the Louis Theroux documentary that I began to realise how very odd and creepy he was.

My parents liked him and used to have his radio show on on a Sunday afternoon as well as Jimll Fix It I was indifferent to him when I saw him on tv as a child.

Just heard on the news that a nurse complained about him as recently as 2002 and was told she was a "silly girl"

Agree with OP Savile probably knew too much about others.

I liked the concept of Jim'll Fix It but didn't much care for Saville. I think a lot of people admired his charity work & couldn't't reconcile that with the rumours that circulated even before his death. I don't think Saville himself was well-loved, more that people liked the high profile things he did.

he was protected probably by perverted councilors, police and others. The 70s were a dark time.
