To think that Saville was NEVER a "Much loved family favourite"???

MrsWinnibago · 26/06/2014 13:33

Sorry to start a thread about this sick, awful animal but they just said on Radio 4 that he was a much loved family favourite.

I CLEARLY remember watching him on Jim'l Fix It and thinking "Oh he's HORRIBLE!"

I hated him...he was frightening and I could see that some children were very scared of him on that show.

Did ANYONE actually enjoy his "performances" and appearances?? I don't think so.

I think the establishment kept him where he was...on TV and in positions of power because he knew too much about THEIR activities.

And it's funny how it all came out once he was dead and couldn't name anyone else.

I challenge anyone to think back and remember how much they "loved" him at the time before his activities were known.

I never liked him either, probably because my parents and grandparents didn't. But I didn't really like many of the children's/ big star adults entertainers of the time very much.

A lot of them just seemed a bit odd/nasty, or just old and unfunny, to me as a kid. Of course a lot of them were actually just a bit odd in a harmless way or a bit pissed off to find themselves working with snotty kids they didn't like very much. I didn't like Mike Read or Rod Hull or Bernie Winters or Jimmy Tarbuck or Matthew Corbett or The Great Soprendo or The Krankies or Bruce Forsyth or Jim Davidson or any of the ventroliquists particularly.

I did really like Brian Trueman, Fred Harris, Derek Griffiths, Floella Benjamin and Johnny Ball, the Rainbow lot, and most of the women on Playschool apart from Kate Copstick and Carol Chell.

I wasn't sure about Brian Cant. He seemed grumpy on Bric a Brac.

EvilGallstones · 26/06/2014 13:56

Who do you blame for him getting away with it all?

MrsWinnibago · 26/06/2014 13:57

baby yes it would seem the majority of people on here didn't have any suspicions whereas a minority did.

I didn't ever think he was much loved, but I felt he was very eccentric.

I vividly remember the Louis Theroux interview where he confronted JS about the rumours. JS said that he didn't ever go with the kids on their Jim'll Fix it days out as he was scared he would be accused of 'things'. He wanted to protect himself. I'm ashamed to admit I felt a bit sorry for him. I thought that it was a shame that he felt that way because of how the world had become.

How wrong was I. Vile excuse for a human being.

MrsWinnibago · 26/06/2014 13:58

Evil what do you mean?

he had friends in very high places didnt he? not mentioning any names of course.

BomChickaMeowMeow · 26/06/2014 13:59

CHRISTOPHER LILICRAP. He was on my good list as well. Though I couldn't understand why my mum laughed a lot at his name.

tethersend · 26/06/2014 14:00

Don't agree about Noel Edmonds- as a child, I found him creepy too.

And Bruce Forsyth.

ViviPru · 26/06/2014 14:00

BomChicka I totally concur with your weird-creep-o-meter. Would add in Noel Edmunds to the urgh-get-him-away-from-me category.

MrsWinnibago · 26/06/2014 14:01

Oh I see. Evil well if I knew that then I'd be off reporting them wouldn;t I! He knocked about with politicians, police, legal people and gangsters from what I hear.

stopgap · 26/06/2014 14:01

When I was a child, I thought he was strange but harmless. My mum considered him a grim weirdo when she was a teenager and watched Top of the Pops.

BomChickaMeowMeow · 26/06/2014 14:02

I didn't mind Noel Edmonds, or Cheggers. Couldn't stand the former after he starting doing his Saturday night stuff though.

gatofeliz · 26/06/2014 14:02

I read the other thread a couple of years ago which was eye opening.

Someone posted a link about Jeremy Beadle raising in excess of 100 million pounds for his charity work, yet he didnt get knighted, wasnt classed as a national treasure, and certainly didnt run hospitals or advise the Royals.

Makes you wonder why those in power were so in awe of Saville when others of his generation were doing the same work and what they personally gained from brushing it under the carpet Hmm

Saville was a shit DJ and a creepy TV presenter who scared me as a child.

CharmQuark · 26/06/2014 14:02

We didn't like him in our house.

I thought he was naff and that Jim'll Fix It was naff, I hated all JS's mannersims, all that stupid UHohUHohUHoh warbling, and his hair and clothes.

My Mum, who worked with abused children (generally, not JS victims, as far as she knew) , thought him creepy and always turned over if he was on TV.

ViviPru · 26/06/2014 14:04

it may or may not be relevant, but with hindsight I recognise that as a child I was probably totally parroting my Mum's views on who we liked and didn't like. On a tangent, For years I couldn't stand Nelson Mandela, but could never quite articulate why. Then he died and my Mum was, lets just say less than sad at the news. I was like Ahhh that's where my problem with him comes from. I'm just her drone.

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 26/06/2014 14:04

I couldn't stand him either. He always seemed creepy and grubby.

That twat Harris made me uncomfortable too. His cartoon drawing show with all of that panting was really odd.

Bruce Forcythe is another one who gives me the creeps. Not that I'm saying there's anything dodgy about him - he just makes me uncomfortable.

BomChickaMeowMeow · 26/06/2014 14:05

I just don't like that "Take the piss out of Joe Bloggs" style that Forsyth had on Generation Game/Play Your Cards Right. Which is why I like Alexander Armstrong so much these days, he laughs with the contestants on Pointless, and there is only ever gentle ribbing, not that stroppy I MAKE THE JOKES AROUND HERE style of yesteryear.

DangerousBeanz · 26/06/2014 14:05

I can remember hiding behind the sofa when Jimmy Saville was on the telly when I was little. Him and Gary Glitter scared me senseless, and I wasn't a soft kid I watched Dr who with no fear. My Mum and Dad thought he did good work, but later my MIL who was brought up in Leeds, said that it was common knowledge in the early 60's, when he was a DJ, that he was interested in very young girls. The Louis Theroux programme totally freaked me out, but even then my DH, who is usually,V astute defended him on the grounds of all the good work he had. Saville was very clever and created a smoke screen arond himself that fooleda lot of people

limitedperiodonly · 26/06/2014 14:05

OP, you must have been a far more sophisticated child than me and also my parents, and they were nobody's fools.

At the time of Jim'll Fix It, Jimmy Savile was the epitome of the much-loved family favourite.

Your post seems to suggest that viewers knew, or should have known that he was a wrong 'un. I'm sure it's not your intention, but that is close to saying that people who were abused by him, or whose children were, are at fault.

NigellasDealer · 26/06/2014 14:06

have a look at the thread about him on the DI forums...DI is another one that said years ago about JS but having a v public mental breakdown was easy to dismiss.
take a look

NigellasDealer · 26/06/2014 14:06

*having had

Darkesteyes · 26/06/2014 14:06

He was back presenting the final edition of Top of the Pops on bbc1 in 2006.

My dm was defending him even AFTER the truth came out. She said the victims should be ashamed for going on This Morning.

We had a MASSIVE ROW about it in her kitchen. I was angry and upset with her.....I still am because of these attitudes.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/06/2014 14:07

Yes, loved Jim ll fix it - everyone did. He was very sweet to the children on the show and aged 6/7 all I wanted was to go on that show

BomChickaMeowMeow · 26/06/2014 14:08

I wasn't a massive fan of Rolf Harris as a person, but Rolf's Cartoon Club was de rigeur at one point in my life.

MrsWinnibago · 26/06/2014 14:08

limited I was FAR from sophisticated.
