To think that Saville was NEVER a "Much loved family favourite"???

MrsWinnibago · 26/06/2014 13:33

Sorry to start a thread about this sick, awful animal but they just said on Radio 4 that he was a much loved family favourite.

I CLEARLY remember watching him on Jim'l Fix It and thinking "Oh he's HORRIBLE!"

I hated him...he was frightening and I could see that some children were very scared of him on that show.

Did ANYONE actually enjoy his "performances" and appearances?? I don't think so.

I think the establishment kept him where he was...on TV and in positions of power because he knew too much about THEIR activities.

And it's funny how it all came out once he was dead and couldn't name anyone else.

I challenge anyone to think back and remember how much they "loved" him at the time before his activities were known.

I LOVED Tony Hart and Morph and Chas

hiddenhome · 26/06/2014 14:09

I always thought he was creepy and vile, even with all that charity work shit.

I hope he's being tortured in Hell for eternity.

ViviPru · 26/06/2014 14:09

Perhaps those of us who thought he was weird as fuck were more sophisticated, maybe not. I think it's rather unfair on the OP though - nowhere has she intimated that his victims were to blame.

hellskitty · 26/06/2014 14:09

Nigellasdealer I cannot even bother responding to your illogical ramblings

MrsWinnibago · 26/06/2014 14:09

hidden I know what you mean.

Me too darkest

MrsWinnibago · 26/06/2014 14:10

Viv as I just said I was very unsophisticated. Quite sheltered and led a bit of a charmed life.

I agree with you entirely OP.

I arrived in UK in 1994. Every time I saw reference to JS in the media they were telling me how wonderful and beloved he was. I could never understand it - he was a horrible man. I instinctively found him entirely repellent and have only ever had a similar reaction to one other person, who turned out to be a pedophile.

One of the mysteries of British life to me was how JS was a celebrity, successful media career and was so "well liked". Perplexing.

limitedperiodonly · 26/06/2014 14:11

Bruce Forcythe is another one who gives me the creeps. Not that I'm saying there's anything dodgy about him - he just makes me uncomfortable.

Yeah, that Christopher Jefferies's appearance made a lot of people feel uncomfortable too. Remember him? Not that I'm saying he's dodgy, or anything

If only it was that easy to identify threats, or wholly innocent people such as Mr Jefferies.

ViviPru · 26/06/2014 14:11

Me too. Tony Hart was on the nice list.

NigellasDealer · 26/06/2014 14:12

how is what I have said 'illogical' hellskitty?

you see that is typical of apologists for this scum, dismiss people usiing loaded words like 'ramblings' - what are you trying to say? do you think I am mentally ill?

NigellasDealer · 26/06/2014 14:13

oh and by the way love you just did respond to my post didn't you? Grin

HauntedNoddyCar · 26/06/2014 14:14

At the beginning of JFI millions of people did watch it. I remember not particularly liking him but liking the fixes. He was just an annoying link man. After a few years I realised he was strange and creepy and that feeling increased.

So in the 1990s when a friend with newspaper contacts told me of the goings on at St James Hospital and the morgue stuff, I was horrified but entirely credulous.

The papers knew but were scared to use it. Hospital staff knew but weren't able to stop him. He kept his charity work to make him seem a saint whilst he abused children.

The streets were lined with mourners for his funeral. People liked him right up until the revelations.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 26/06/2014 14:14

I think it would be a generational thing too.

I was a child of the 70's but in the 60's Saville was a big influence in dance hall music and was apparently a very innovative DJ. He went onto Radio Luxembourg which was IIRC extremely on trend and where he was probably seen as quirky. He presented the first ever Top of the Pops, so I imagine a generation of kids in the 60's were pretty heavily influenced by him.

Although when you look now at the show titles e.g. Teen and Twenty Disc Club you do shudder a bit, but no one would have made the connection then I imagine.

I remember his Sunday radio show where you'd have to guess the year, and win points for guessing the number one in a top ten countdown. It was on every sunday while my mum and dad made lunch.

I loved Jim'll Fixit but when he presented the medals or sat on the sofa surround by kids I just used to think of him as one of those embarrassing older people that you occasionally came into contact with as a kid, like an Uncle who gets pissed and over the top at a wedding. The vests with his droopy chest and hair hanging out used to be a bit cringey.

I think that sums him up for me at the time, a bit embarrassing and cringey.

I agree that the Louis Theroux program was a turning point - all of a sudden he wasn't a cringey rude arse piece, he became dark.

But I put it down to hidden homosexuality (his travel companion Jimmy the Pill was an awkward conversation) or that he possibly had an incestuous relationship with his mother. And who knows, maybe he did?

I think I was more suprised and gutted with the DLT and Rolf accusations though, DLT was a family favourite in our house.

Aeroflotgirl · 26/06/2014 14:14

It was a nice programme and I loved the fix it's. I did not have an opinion on him as I was still only little, but watching the Louis Theroux programme on him made me sick. He was so yucky.

Fav · 26/06/2014 14:14

I loved Jim'll fix it, it was my favourite show as a child.
I can't remember thinking anything about JS, either bad or good, until I was a teenager, when he was regarded as a creepy old letch by most of the people I knew.

TheSpottedZebra · 26/06/2014 14:15

I was in hospital in the mid-80s and he visited.
We were strongly encouraged to sit with him, sit on his lap etc etc. My hospital friend and I thought he was horrid so we ran and hid. And got into trouble from everyone - the hospital staff, our parents, the other patients' parents - as he was such a beloved creature.

BeeInYourBonnet · 26/06/2014 14:16

I always found him creepy, not for any particular reason though. There were a lot of creepy looking/acting middle aged men on TV at the time.

Saying that, I was desperate to go on Jim'll Fix It!

fairnotfair · 26/06/2014 14:16

I loved the show, but he made me feel very uncomfortable. As a child, I thought he was a creepy, embarrassing show-off. My parents also hated him, but I think that was partly because of his manner and his appalling clothes - my mother thought he was the epitome of vulgar!

HouseofEliot · 26/06/2014 14:17

I loved Jim'll fix it as did all of my friends. If he was never liked he would not have been on television.

Disgusted with him now though.

Smilesandpiles · 26/06/2014 14:17

Holy Crap, that forum is going to be an interesting read Nigella.

NigellasDealer · 26/06/2014 14:18

just take it easy if you are going to read it smiles, don't try and read it in one sitting.

YouTheCat · 26/06/2014 14:19

I always thought he was a total weird perv, even as a child. Very dodgy indeed.

I get the same vibe off a local bloke who dresses up as a clown and gets invited into schools. I can't put my finger on why.

I'm glad Jeremy Beadle isn't part of the 'bad list'. I met him at a friend's 40th years ago and he was absolutely lovely, unassuming and kind.

MrsWinnibago · 26/06/2014 14:21

Saying what I've just said in my OP...I met Rolf Harris once...when I was 26 and thought he was just lovely! He was very charming to me. Confused

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 26/06/2014 14:22

You are definitely NOT being unreasonable; I was a child of the 50s and I NEVER liked him there was something dead behind the eyes about him. There weren't many options to watch on telly in them days!
