To be glad Judy Murray isn't my MIL?

I am sure that she is a perfectly pleasant person and obviously immensely proud of her son; but all of this publicity about appearing on national TV (I think it was 'Strictly') and front page news today in the Evening Standard 'serving coffee to fans', makes me think she is being a wee bit possessive and trying to upstage the fiancée? Or is that being too harsh?

OP posts:
Happydaysatlast · 25/06/2014 22:07

Bumnyjo brilliant.

GrouchyKiwi · 25/06/2014 22:08

Showy Grin Literally cackling.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 25/06/2014 22:08

"I didn't realise - honestly - that Judy had attracted bad press. I just got the impression from reading recent press reports that she seems a bit self obsessed and trying to cash in on Andy's success."

Let's just take that one sentence at a time, shall we?

"I didn't realise - honestly - that Judy had attracted bad press."

Fair enough, OP... you can't keep on top of everything and clearly you've just not read any of the bad press...

"I just got the impression from reading recent press reports that she seems a bit self obsessed and trying to cash in on Andy's success."

...Oh.

LastMinuteLil · 25/06/2014 22:08

he said something like 'god I hope not, I won't be watching'.....

I'm sure he said that but what you need to take into account was the tone he said it in.

I get the impression - mostly from Twitter, admittedly - that he and his mother tease each other a lot. I get the feeling that their relationship is very secure, close and affectionate. There doesn't appear to me any embarrassment on either side.

WhereTheWildlingsAre · 25/06/2014 22:10

bunnyjo, you have the advantage over all of us

GrouchyKiwi · 25/06/2014 22:10

Bunnyjo Perfect.

MelanieCheeks · 25/06/2014 22:14

I think she is a great role model, a feisty, determined, successful older woman with her own sense of style. I look forward to seeing her on Strickly. Who'd be her best partner, I wonder?

ExitPursuedByAKoalaBear · 25/06/2014 22:18

Anton. Or Brendan.

limitedperiodonly · 25/06/2014 22:19

Who cares what the OP thinks of Judy Murray?

Did anyone see a great documentary late on Monday called When Andy Won Wimbledon?.

They talked to friends and family and a few famous people and intercut with footage of the final and film of him watching a rerun at home on the sofa with his girlfriend - that's not as pigheaded as it sounds.

They had the brilliant idea of filming people as they watched the match on telly not knowing whether he'd win or lose. They're cheering and groaning - it brings it back. I can remember twirling round the room singing: 'Go Andy. Go Andy' and then going 'Oh God, no.'

And to get to the point - Judy Murray comes over so well. So proud of both her sons but not stealing their limelight. I loved that she was genuinely delighted at the glamour of being at the winners' ball - not I Am The Champion's Mum at all.

She even hung back when he climbed into the stands and he had to be reminded to hug her. I liked his dad too and really admire them for being friends even though they're divorced.

It's only on for another five days so do catch it soon because it's worth it.

Especially for his two mates who are happily chatting away in a flat with the filthiest carpet in the world Grin

I think I might watch it again.

Itsfab · 25/06/2014 22:20

What bad press?

carabos · 25/06/2014 22:23

A madman murdered Andy and Jamie's school friends. The parents ran in panic to the school not knowing which children were dead and which were alive. For surviving that experience alone Judy deserves our admiration.

For her personal achievements in sport, her work in women's tennis and her contribution to her sons' success - champions both, she's an outstanding role model for women.

limitedperiodonly · 25/06/2014 22:23

Is she doing Strictly? I guess she'd be quite a good mover.

And she looked great in a close-fitting silver gown for the Winners' Ball which she happily admitted she'd blagged because she didn't have anything as nice.

Fideliney · 25/06/2014 22:25

For surviving that experience alone Judy deserves our admiration.

Sorry carabos I know what you meant, but I'm wincing.

limitedperiodonly · 25/06/2014 22:25

And she has achieved in tennis in her own right, of course, apart from being a mum and looking nice in a silver frock.

MelanieCheeks · 25/06/2014 22:28

Anton gets the no hoper comedy female. Brendan is the feisty pro who gets the demure sleb. I think she might be paired with a less in-your-face dancer like Artem.

limitedperiodonly · 25/06/2014 22:33

She might do badly on Strictly though.

It's watched by a lot of people like the OP who know nothing about Judy Murray's bad press and just speak as they find Wink

I might break the habit of a lifetime and vote on a reality TV show.

Nomama · 25/06/2014 22:33

Coughs - Melanie, no Artem, he's gone! That was the error she made which makes me suspect she isn't really all that interested!

Mrsjayy · 25/06/2014 22:38

Daybreak or whatever is called now showed a pic with artem judy looked v v happy

ChelsyHandy · 25/06/2014 22:38

I think she's great. But she is a nationally ranked tennis coach in her own right. I think she specialises more in up and coming juniors but she's certainly produced results in her chosen sport. Lots of sports have manager types who get lots of publicity, not just players.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 25/06/2014 22:39

Seeing as how her sons went off to train at full time tennis camps from a very young age, With her blessing, i think 'possessive' is not really an adjective that can used about Judy's relationship with her sons.

Mrsjayy · 25/06/2014 22:40

A less I your face like arte m , he and his pecks are always in your face so sad hes gone

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 25/06/2014 22:41

Also she is a Scottish woman who has made a career in tennis. She's rarer than an actual fucking unicorn. But don't give her any credit for that op, whatever you do.

Frontier · 25/06/2014 22:41

I think she'll either be brilliant or dreadful on Strictly. If she has any natural ability at all she'l be fit enough and work hard enough to be good but i get the impression that she might not be very comfortable shaking her booty in a skimpy dress.

Whether she dances well or not, she might not do well in the popularity contest that is the voting. Is the demographic of voters similar to DM readers?!

Mrsjayy · 25/06/2014 22:42

She has a tennis academy I think

wooldonor · 25/06/2014 22:45

Oh dear, I hadn't heard about Judy Murray doing Strictly, if you're reading Judy please don't do it - no good will come of it. People like the OP will tear you apart in the media.
