To be glad Judy Murray isn't my MIL?

I am sure that she is a perfectly pleasant person and obviously immensely proud of her son; but all of this publicity about appearing on national TV (I think it was 'Strictly') and front page news today in the Evening Standard 'serving coffee to fans', makes me think she is being a wee bit possessive and trying to upstage the fiancée? Or is that being too harsh?

Lingering looks, I didn't catch that Smile

Fideliney · 25/06/2014 19:24

Unless she gets hair extensions and learns to simper, she will always get nonsense from some quarters. I doubt she cares.

VinoTime · 25/06/2014 19:25

One of my mums work colleagues used to play tennis with her years ago and always describes her as: "The biggest misery this world has ever known."

I don't know the woman. She comes across as very serious and very competitive, so I don't think we'd get on Grin But who knows. Frankly, I'd be more bothered at the prospect of having to shack up with good ol' Andy than a MIL Judy. He always seems so grumpy!

LaurieFairyCake · 25/06/2014 19:25

What a big pile of shitey bollocks

Judy Murray seems totally fab

Dolcelatte · 25/06/2014 19:25

Sorry if I've upset some tennis fans.

I don't follow tennis particularly but of course everybody has heard of Andy Murray, although I doubt any but the cognoscenti have heard of the mother. I just don't get why she seems to be getting more column inches than her son.

Fine, she serves some coffee etc to loyal fans, but what's all this business with 'Strictly' - please don't tell me she's there on her own merits; her qualification is that she's Andy's mother. I suspect he is secretly embarrassed but too loyal to say so.

Of course Judy has supported her child, but wouldn't most parents support their DC without trying to cash in on the publicity to promote themselves.

Apologies to anyone who knows Judy or if I have completely got hold of the wrong end of the stick; it's just my impression from the media reports.

YABU.

Fideliney · 25/06/2014 19:27

Sorry if I've upset some tennis fans.

What has 'tennis fans' got to do with it? Confused

Pumpkinpositive · 25/06/2014 19:29

Have you been reading the Daily Mail, OP? Hmm

They are vituperous in their naked hatred of this woman.

To be fair, she does tick all the boxes for characteristics your average DM reader hates, being:

a. female

b. "over a certain age" (25)

c. successful

d. not dead yet (see b. above)

LaurieFairyCake · 25/06/2014 19:29

She's not just 'supported his career' like a mother - she's his manager! For years and years.

She is a tennis manager who got her client to the top.

She's not his mother in her job.

Fideliney · 25/06/2014 19:30

Dolce I am not a particular tennis fan, but I am aware of Judy Murray.

You would have to have been in a cave for the past decade NOT to have heard of Judy Murray.

Your OP reads as having a fairly misogynistic subtext. If that wasn't your intention, perhaps you could explain?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 25/06/2014 19:32

She is fed cup captain, a successful and respected tennis coach. Jeez op is that not enough for you.FFS

Dolcelatte · 25/06/2014 19:32

I am happy to re-assure posters that I don't read the DM! The article I read was in the London Evening Standard.

Pumpkinpositive · 25/06/2014 19:33

I am sure that she is a perfectly pleasant person and obviously immensely proud of her son

She actually has two sons, both Wimbledon champions (one in mixed dubs, the other in singles). I'm sure she's proud of both.

She's obviously doing something right, to produce two Grand Slam winning offspring and have a flourishing career in her own right. Hmm

Dolcelatte · 25/06/2014 19:34

No subtext I assure you; what is it with AIBU these days that posters can't just say YABU, it just turns into a personal attack!

OP posts:
pictish · 25/06/2014 19:34

Oh for fuck's sake.
She is his manager, coached him from a young age through his own choice, and had everything to do with helping him become the player he is today.

But no - the most important thing about her is fantasising that she's a thunderstealing mother in law. Hmm

What a load of old shit.

Fideliney · 25/06/2014 19:35

AM's girlfriend has no official role at Wimbledon so how could she be upstaged?

Fideliney · 25/06/2014 19:36

Personal attack? Where? Hmm

Pumpkinpositive · 25/06/2014 19:37

As his girlfriend I'd have more issues with the lingering looks that pass between him and the new coach

Unless Mauresmo has decided to renounce her wife, I'm sure Kim's doesn't have anything to worry about in that quarter.

pictish · 25/06/2014 19:39

My impression of Judy Murray is that she is a genuinely amiable and intelligent woman, who is proud of her son.

How very dare she hand out coffee? Doesn't she know that as soon as the gf appears, she's supposed to fuck off to the far side of fuck, never to be seen again?

That hag.

Hmm
Pagwatch · 25/06/2014 19:39

I think most people know about her role in her sons tennis careers tbh.
I don't know anyone who doesn't and, whilst I watch Wimbledon, I am not a tennis fan.

I think it's quite unusual not to know she is a coach and a respected figure within tennis.

Nomama · 25/06/2014 19:39

The coffee serving thing is an every year occurrence, coffee, cold drinks, sweeties, pictures.... someone always goes and talks to the queue, it happens every single year.

As for Strictly, she obviously isn't that invested - she said she wanted Artem as her partner! But her 'qualification' for being approached for it includes her son and her own tennis career.

Joysmum · 25/06/2014 19:40

You're the one comparing the 2 women, I don't know them, but would hope they don't see it as a competition as you do.

scotchtikidoll · 25/06/2014 19:41

I've got all the admiration in the world for strong women who do well for themselves. (She is successful in her own right)

She is obviously a fine mother who has raised her sons well.

Fideliney · 25/06/2014 19:42

OP would you post in the same way about the father/manager and boyfriend of a sportswoman?

Pumpkinpositive · 25/06/2014 19:44

although I doubt any but the cognoscenti have heard of the mother

Unless you've been dwelling in a cave or under a bridge most people will have heard of Judy Murray. She's the Fed Cup Captain. She doesn't need to ride Andy's coat tails. 'Celebrities' a lot less noteworthy than her have graced the line up of Strictly for years.
