To be glad Judy Murray isn't my MIL?

I am sure that she is a perfectly pleasant person and obviously immensely proud of her son; but all of this publicity about appearing on national TV (I think it was 'Strictly') and front page news today in the Evening Standard 'serving coffee to fans', makes me think she is being a wee bit possessive and trying to upstage the fiancée? Or is that being too harsh?

I would bloody love for Judy to be my MIL. She could help me improve my backhand and I could go and stay in her big house in Bridge of Allan when she was travelling with her Federation Cup duties.

pictish · 25/06/2014 19:46

I'm not a tennis fan at all...and I know about Judy Murray. Everyone knows Judy Murray.

Fideliney · 25/06/2014 19:47

Have some Cake OP, this isn't going how you hoped is it?

georgedawes · 25/06/2014 19:47

As already said, she's fed cup captain - successful in her own right! (She's not his manager though to those that said).

Hate all this sexist crap from people who don't know anything about her or her son. I think she is inspirational - to have raised two grand slam champions in dunblane of all places is incredible.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 25/06/2014 19:52

I can't stand don't follow tennis. But I saw her on jack Whitehall (never thought I'd say that) and I thought what a fantastic role model she is, supported her family, is witty, intelligent and shows the dmailers of this world that a woman of a certain age doesn't have to fade into the background. Know nothing about her relationship with her dil and her son and care less.

LucilleBluth · 25/06/2014 19:52

MN has finally reached the pinnacle of MIL bashing......a successful woman coaches her two grand slam winning sons from childhood, invests in their future, ships them off to world class tennis camps and now she should shrivel up and die cos one DS has a tabloid friendly GF, what the actual fuck are you on about OP.

RiverTam · 25/06/2014 19:55

what a nasty post. YABVU. Oh, and the Evening Standard is no improvement on the DM, by the way, given that it's part of the same newspaper group.

caramelwaffle · 25/06/2014 19:56

"FidelineyWed 25-Jun-14 19:42:01

OPwould you post in the same way about the father/manager and boyfriend of a sportswoman?"

An EXCELLENT point by FidelineyWed

OneStepCloser · 25/06/2014 19:58

Successful in her own right, strong woman, whats not to admire. We should celebrate people like Judy Murray.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 25/06/2014 19:59

It's a bit rich, really, to start an entire thread criticising a woman you've never met and admit you know little about and then to start complaining about "personal attacks".

She's worked with the LTA on a host of things -- recently on improving grassroots participation in the sport and most recently as Fed Cup captain (which gives her something of an oversight of the women's game in general). And she runs a campaign (Set4Sport) to get young children moving and involved in active games. It's part of her job to drum up publicity.

EmpireBiscuit · 25/06/2014 20:01

Many years ago I went to a party at her house.

Fideliney · 25/06/2014 20:03

That was illuminating Empire Grin

Pagwatch · 25/06/2014 20:03
Grin
ExitPursuedByAKoalaBear · 25/06/2014 20:04

Sheesh.

Yeah. Slap that bitch down. How dare shebe in the press because she is Successful in what she does and interesting and involved and active.

She is doing so much to encourage girls into tennis.

Was the girlfriend wanting to be on stage?

LucilleBluth · 25/06/2014 20:04

Was it a car keys in the bowl kind of party.

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 25/06/2014 20:07

I assumed it was a light-hearted post and responded accordingly ....

Mrsjayy · 25/06/2014 20:08

She looks terrifying but apparently really lovely dd and her friend met her, a lot of mums from dunblane have a determined look about them, I hope she does strictly I bet she will be in her element

So she is strong, successful, ambitious and competitive?

I admire and respect her and think that she has done loads for British tennis.

You sound petty. We need to promote strong women in this country instead of criticising them.

Dolcelatte · 25/06/2014 20:11

Empire - was it a good party?

I note the comments; I still don't see why she wants to go on 'Strictly' if she is a serious individual and sportswoman - isn't that for failed politicians and the wannabes like Nancy Delorio?

I get that she loves her sons, but I still suspect that they are embarrassed by her. I'm all for growing old disgracefully but I wouldn't want to do it publicly and embarrass my DC.

And the Evening Standard is free and the only evening paper in London, which virtually everybody who lives and works in London reads; so not sure of the point being made here.

In the Radio Times this week Judy Murray is quoted as saying "if I were the dad of sons, I wouldn't have been noticed"

What about the female tennis players coached by their fathers? The Murray lads seem to be far less damaged than a lot of the teenage champion girls like Sabatini.

drudgetrudy · 25/06/2014 20:14

Glad to see the responses.
Restored my faith in mumsnet a bit.
Both ageism and mysogyny combined in your post.

HauntedNoddyCar · 25/06/2014 20:14

Quite a few sportsMEN have done Strictly.

It's just a sense, I admit, but I don't think they are that shallow.

They have every reason to appreciate their luck in being alive and having each other.
