How can I convince my daughter to come with HB and myself without her constantly saying : I'm not going!
We'll be going to UAE and there are some amazing places over there.
Of course there might be some negative points but I like to believe the positive points outbalance them.
Does anyone have experience of travelling with a teenage daughter?
She has her friends here etc....It's a big chance . How to make moving abroad exciting for her?

And if you think moss side is less shitholish than Qatar then it's a real shame you got made redundant. Being so bitter and having to live like that will really eat away at you.

Was that aimed at me? Again WTAF? I've never been to moss side let alone mentioned it. I wasn't bothered at the redundancy actually. But hey, carry on feeling "special"

GilmoursPillow · 04/06/2014 17:30

desertmum do you mean GeorgieArmani or GeordieArmani. The latter has a friend in Cyprus.

The Middle East is a horribly small world.

I still think Fannydabbydozey portrays it perfectly

As for the runners - not all are people who decided to keep up with the jones'. My work friend who ran had been there for two years and had two cars because he lived in Dubai and worked in Abu Dhabi and his wife needed a car to do the school run. It's cheaper to buy a car out there than hire one. It's also very, very easy to buy one. He was earning a good salary

FanDabby, irrespective to what their reasons were for getting into debt, keeping up with the Jones' or actual need of a brand spanking new 4x4 (for all I know they might have to drive over a wadi to get to work?), people know the risks they are taking, they know defaulting on debt is a criminal offense, yet they CHOSE to do it. Yes buying is cheaper than leasing a car, yes renting for a year with post dated cheques is cheaper than a serviced apartment, but IMO especially for those who don't have a financial safety net, you pay a small premium to have the peace of mind that if your job does go tits up, you can exit debt free. In fact, I wouldn't recommend anyone to go to live in the ME (or anywhere in Asia) without a "fall back on" amount of cash. Not just to cover the initial outlays, but to cover you if you lose your job.

desertmum small world indeed. I think Livelytrish from EW is living in Cyprus now too. Will see you sometime soon on an EW TNT thread.

I always love the maid threads - they get seriously crazy!

I wonder how the maids feel about them.

desertmum · 04/06/2014 17:42

Modern - often maids will come on and put their point of view forward. And by seriously crazy I am not belittling the maids but commenting on some of the points of view of the posters, some of whom need shooting.
Melted, I know livelytrish !
And yes, I meant geordie not georgie!
The world just keeps getting smaller.

Melted I lived in the UAE for two years and have worked in Qatar three times on separate short term projects. I def preferred the UAE. I was angling to go to Oman towards the end but thes not really anything in my industry there. Love Oman!

We started off in Abu Dhabi because that was where my work was, then moved to Dubai when the school wasn't right for my daughter. I preferred Dubai really - the driving was better! My company was in Mussafah in Abu Dhabi and I lived on the Corniche and my drive home was TERRIFYING. My second week there I saw a truck drive on top of a sports car at the merging junction of the truck road and airport road. Sometimes you'd hear a crash rather than see it. Oh the near misses I had! I'm feeling tense just remembering it. SZR was remarkably tame in comparison and that's saying something! We'd share the commute to Abu Dhabi - so we'd only have to drive once a week. I tried to make mine any day but Thursday. Thursday night home on the highway was carnage. Oh and driving through fog...

And if we are talking about expatwoman posters, DesertRose1948 was on here. She never came back after posting to confirm it was her though... It must have been as she was discussing the very fair way she treats her staff and I recognised her arguments.

Love Redlesley and all the work she does. She came into our kid's school after I told her there were far too many kids not using car seats. We still have her buckle up bags and hats - the buckle up bags are my children's swimming bags now!

I am not such a horrid person in real life, it's just these threads that make me so angry. I got attacked by a sicko man on this forum a few years ago because of where I lived because his friend had been arrested here and it really, really affected me. It does make me defensive because it's just a place and some of the things people say are completely mental. Anyway, I am happy here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now and I expect that's how most of these posters feel as well so isn't that good. I still stand by my horror of China though.
