It is over 100 years since a national election has been won by a party other than the Conservatives and Labour.

What's more the UK Independence Party did it by winning seats not just in every region of England but in Wales and Scotland too!

UKIP opinions are the majority - FACT!

OP posts:
squoosh · 27/05/2014 14:02

Oh yes the low levels of voter turnout is enraging.

OxfordBags · 27/05/2014 14:04

It comes as no surprise that a UKIP voter wouldn't be able to understand a simple concept like what a majority is, and wouldn't know what sort of election they'd just voted in, although it's always a horrible surprise when women chose to vote for the most misogynist party on offer.

OP, a majority means 'more than 50%'. As others have pointed out, as only 34% of eligible voters voted, no view or vote can be considered representative of majority opinion. Furthermore, as UKIP didn't even get close to 50% of the 34% of votes, it can only be classified as a minority view.

I voted, and did not vote UKIP because I am not a hateful, thick, racist, homophobic, xenophobic scumbag with a terrifying level of internalised misogyny, and I simply do not have low enough self-esteem or intelligence to demean myself by voting for such a party, nor am I gullible enough to decide to vote for a party purely because the leader is a 'character', nor immature enough to vote for them just to try to make some sort of misguided protest.

And I'm putting that as nicely as I can, believe me.

AutumnStar · 27/05/2014 14:04

And yes, Jillian . Some party members are in favour of aborting foetuses with Down's Syndrome.

goshhhhhh · 27/05/2014 14:05

So MrsSkilly - UKIP are sexist as well as racist? & btw there are long term proven benefits to society in enabling mothers to be with their child in the first year of their life.

OxfordBags · 27/05/2014 14:05

BTW, the law of irony dictates that anyone who writes 'FACT!' like the OP did will have their facts wrong, just like pedantic posts will inevitably contain typos or a dodgy apostrophe :)

IdkickJilliansAss · 27/05/2014 14:08

Thanks Autumn I thought I'd read that

Joysmum · 27/05/2014 14:10

I hope it makes the main parties reevaluate there policies on Europe and immigration and take a stance more akin to the economic benefits and migrants can bring.

Other than that I'm not delighted. They had elected MEP's prior to the election and instead if attending to bring about change, they neglected to turn up to vote!

Their national policies are non existent or harmful so I hope to hell they don't do well in national elections.

MrsSkilly · 27/05/2014 14:11

goshhhhhh I was quoting OP. Believe me, those are not my opinions!

FidelineandFumblin · 27/05/2014 14:12

It wasn't a national election

Yes it was. It was national but not a general election.

LittleMissDisorganized · 27/05/2014 14:18

OxfordBags is spot on. I read a really good blog this morning about the actual results of the election, and not the London-centric anti-Labour rubbish that the BBC and the Press seem determined to print.

I have always voted, and I find the number of people who voted for Europe sad, infuriating, and frightening in equal measure.

BaldricksTurnip · 27/05/2014 14:20

Brilliant post from OxfordBags.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 27/05/2014 14:21

"I think you mean reducing, not scrapping, maternity pay?"

No, I don't. See <a class="break-all" href="//web.archive.org/web/20140502092103/www.keithrowe.info/policies/ukip-small-business-policy/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">web.archive.org/web/20140502092103/www.keithrowe.info/policies/ukip-small-business-policy/ (archived version of page which has now been taken down but was there a couple of weeks ago): "UKIP would abolish SMP entirely" (granted they would pay £64/week to 'parents who stay at home with their children')

Again, until the last couple of weeks the website of UKIP's Small and Medium Business Spokesman Amjad Bashir listed Maternity leave in a list of "Employment policies which make it impossible to employ" -- you can still see the original page <a class="break-all" href="//web.archive.org/web/20140429214324/www.amjadbashir.co.uk/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here.

SO well put!

evelynj · 27/05/2014 14:27

I didn't vote and I think it's shameful. Understanding the political parties has been on my to do list for a long time. I've now moved to Northern Ireland which is a whole other kind of weird system. Where is a good place to learn simple & fairly unbiased views? Obv I'm against UKIP....

wigornian · 27/05/2014 14:27

These threads are hilarious - zealots on both sides making unsubstantiated claims about the other. There is very little tolerance on Mumsnet and here there certainly seems to be a majority of Guardian-reading lefties goaded by UKIP adherents, I dont think you will ever understand each other.

OP is misguided, no party represents a majority of opinions in this country, as has been said no party since the early 1950s had got over 50% of the vote, and I think at that point, in 1950 despite winning the popular vote, the Conservatives narrowly missed beating Labour, though did so in 1951. I digress.

Our system is so skewed towards Labour now, those of you who are UKIP averse can rest easy, they won't win, or probably get more than one or two MPs either - Labour could lose the popular vote and still get a majority in Parliament....plainly undemocratic, but that will be OK with Mumsnet majority won't it, because you agree with them?

By the way - here's a fact, there are nutters in every party, UKIP are new to the big time and have rattled the establishment. A lot of the things people claim are there policies are actually left-wing propaganda, just like the hubbub about Gove's plans for English literature!

And, a final shot for your pearl clutching Mumsnet champagne socialists - I am a darkie, ethnic minority voter, I have a Masters Degree in Politics from Durham University, I am a Tory, but voted UKIP for the European Elections because I want out and despair at the compromises the Tories have had to make with Clegg (who I do, nevertheless, and paradoxically, feel sorry for as I think he did a courageous thing going into Coalition to save the country from the usual mess the Labour lot leave it in).

ToysRLuv · 27/05/2014 14:27

During this week I have been correcting too many people on their maths. It's appalling.

"Majority of the country wants" this and that UKIP related. Bollocks.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 27/05/2014 14:27

"the actual results of the election, and not the London-centric anti-Labour rubbish that the BBC and the Press seem determined to print."

Hang on, the London vote swung quite strongly towards Labour. So how can the reporting have been both London-centric and anti-Labour? I can see how one or the other could have been managed, but not both at once.

Fakebook · 27/05/2014 14:31

Doesn't take much to overjoy you does it? Hmm...

AutumnStar · 27/05/2014 14:32

"A darkie ethnic minority"? Jesus wept.

squoosh · 27/05/2014 14:33

'I am a darkie, ethnic minority voter, I have a Masters Degree in Politics from Durham University, I am a Tory, but voted UKIP'

Good for you! Hmm

squoosh · 27/05/2014 14:34

I'm an immigrant and I didn't vote UKIP.

AutumnStar · 27/05/2014 14:36

Might just get in the cupboard and weep for humanity. Who wants in? You'll have to bring biscuits with you.

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/05/2014 14:38

Anyone who thinks the we should leave the EU quite clearly doesn't understand the purpose, importance or implications. I'd suggest some bed time reading for you people.

The one think about this whole thing that comforts me is that people are protest voting. This has caused the inflated numbers. They won't be protest voting at the general elections and die hard UKIP supporters will find themselves disappointed. That'll be a good day.

ToysRLuv · 27/05/2014 14:39

I don't know whether to laugh or cry about all the goings on, so I feel mainly confusion.

I have also had this playing in my head a lot this week (I'm an immigrant and married to the son of a refugee, but at least neither of us are "darkies", eh) :

ToysRLuv · 27/05/2014 14:40

Hey, I've got chocolate - can I come in the cupboard? Is it big enough for my bum?
