..with all the immigrants who've come to the UK over the past few years?

Given that I suspect you think there are far too many here and that they are a major cause of our current housing and jobs shortage?

Just asking! :-)

I know that I haven't personally got much to worry about as anti Irish rhetoric isn't the done thing at the moment, but I just wonder exactly how far the average ukkip voters prejudice against immigrants goes, and why, I with my charming accent and pale looks are OK, but Romanians aren't. When we're both doing the same economic thing at the base of it.

mrsruffallo · 26/05/2014 18:33

Yes, we will still be able to holiday. I wouldn't feel at all comfortable about taking my children to Latvia and living on benefits and having them educated there. That's not liberating, it's depressing.

whynowblowwind · 26/05/2014 18:34

I wasn't being rude! It was an observation, not a criticism. I've heard Bulgaria is lovely actually but I don't travel myself so wouldn't know.

The point is, the movement is as I said one way and I don't think that is a good thing, sorry - but I don't.

I didn't vote UKIP though; I didn't vote at all actually.

mrsruffallo · 26/05/2014 18:34

From the ones I know, I don't think they hate immigrants at all.

VampyreofTimeandMemory · 26/05/2014 18:35

no idea tucson I just know many of our grandparents weren't originally from here.

TucsonGirl · 26/05/2014 18:35

I don't think people would be so anti-EU if it had just stayed at being a union of Western Europe. There's not so much benefit for French, German, Dutch, people to come here as there is Polish, Slovakian, Romanian etc.

diaimchlo · 26/05/2014 18:36

It really makes me Angry To see threads like this where people seem to have chosen UKIP because of immigration.... is that all as the supposed party they are going to deal with?????? If their members comments over the last few years have anything to go by the answer is NO!!!!

They have spouted bile such as disabled babies should be terminated, disabled people should be institutionalized etc...... in fact I do not see anything about this megalomaniac party that is good tbh.

People want rid of the Tories because of complete mess up they have made of this country with their Draconian ways..... So why vote for a Party that is so more to the Right of the house that they are sitting in the Thames.... must say that is the best place for them.

The whole point is being part of Europe with the automatic freedom of movement rather than singling out individual countries to swap directly with

Why in gods name would being able to go to Latvia merit staying in Europe?

Its not just Latvia there is also Romania and the other EE countries.

Why wouldnt people want to go there?

What is the point of open borders with so many countries if people don't want to go there...

I am quite sure....there is equal ish movement from Spain and France etc to those EE countries as well as from Britain and under the agreement they can claim the same benefits, and have same cushions...like health care as well.

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 18:39

Or at the very least like spain has done where you now have to have a minimum income per month to move despite it being in EU

I dont think Spain has done this or UK would have...

Its all got to be equal, that is the whole point

EffectiveCommunication · 26/05/2014 18:40

I wondered about it too. I phoned up a European relative and asked them what they thought of UKIP, and what would they do if they were asked to leave the UK. They responded, I work so I doubt they will want to get rid of me.

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 18:43

I wouldn't feel at all comfortable about taking my children to Latvia and living on benefits and having them educated there. That's not liberating, it's depressing

Sorry when I meant benefits I mean, not go and sit on the dole I mean free health service, translators, a cushion if you loose your job etc...I mean the benefits of a welfare state.

WickedWitchoftheNorthWest · 26/05/2014 18:43

For goodness sakes can we stop getting sidetracked about Latvia etc? The fact is that loads and loads of Brits, about a million of them, do actually live in the EU. If the UK pulls out of Europe there is no reason at all to think the Spanish, French, etc governments would let them stay.

Thee is a great deal of resentment in France and Spain about Brits moving over and pushing up the price of houses over there so that young local people can't afford to buy their own homes. If the UK pulls out of the EU then Brits lose their automatic right to remain there, and many would be forced to sell their properties off cheaply and return home. Problem solved, from the point of view of the French and Spanish. Very few of them want the massive waves of British immigrants that are there!

mrsruffallo · 26/05/2014 18:44

You go there then, Razzle, and claim benefits. Let us know how you get on.

mrsruffallo · 26/05/2014 18:44

Riga - I believe the police drive Ladas

mrsruffallo · 26/05/2014 18:45

Health service on a par with the NHS? Translators? I don't think so.

TucsonGirl · 26/05/2014 18:45

What "massive waves of British immigrants"? Where is this? And are they right for resenting this whereas British people are wrong for resenting the immigrants we have here?

I do not believe British people would be kicked out of EU member countries were we to leave the union.

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 18:46

Its not just the UK that is benefiting so much from immigration, its rather greedy and inward looking to be rubbing hands over all the immigration to the UK, and yet Millions have left Poland...and the other countries, so what benefit are they getting if not two way?

Retropear · 26/05/2014 18:46

Razzle for a start there is limited work and like many British people dp and I don't speak anything other than English and a bit of French. So finding a job(if there was an abundance in our fields which I doubt)let alone being able to do it in another language would be nigh on impossible.

And actually like many I kind of like it here and have/ had a decent NHS,ed system, family etc.

Again why on earth would I want to live in Latvia?Paris would be nice but actually unworkable when you consider lang barrier, jobs,ed,family etc

I seriously worry re some pro Euro people, seriously not being horrible but you're living in cloud cuckoo land.

mrsruffallo · 26/05/2014 18:47

Why wouldn't they let them stay? Brits bring a lot of money into Spain and France. I don't think we should kick people out. You are the only person talking, endlessly it seems, about that.

manicinsomniac · 26/05/2014 18:47

but there is no cushion for immigrants coming here is there? It's work or go home.

I have a South African friend who recently moved to London with her (also South African) husband because he got a new job there. She was very picky about which jobs she applied to and I asked her if the job centre wouldn't start forcing her to apply for things she had no interest in. She looked at me like I was crazy and said 'I haven't got a British passport, I'm not eligible for JSA.' She's been in this country for 3 years.

Or is it different for people from the EU?

WickedWitchoftheNorthWest · 26/05/2014 18:48

Tucsongirl they are in France and Spain, mostly. On what legal basis do you think would they be allowed to remain and why would the governments of those countries agree to let them stay? Doesn't matter what you "believe", it's the facts that matter.

Teeb · 26/05/2014 18:48

Do you believe free movement is a generally good thing Razzle? I don't see why a points system would be a bad thing. If Latvians brought sufficient money/assets/skills with them that we as a country required, then they would be allowed to enter. Likewise for Brits who would like to live in France, Latvia, Romania.

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 18:48

For goodness sakes can we stop getting sidetracked about Latvia etc?

Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Lithuania.

I dont understand how its getting side tracked, people do move there in large numbers from the UK as well as to Spain and France.

As I said its rather greedy to be relishing all the benefits of immigration, and then suggest these countries are missing out?

mrsruffallo · 26/05/2014 18:48

I am confused. You sound like you think France and Spain should kick non nationals out. Did you vote UKIP?
