..with all the immigrants who've come to the UK over the past few years?

Given that I suspect you think there are far too many here and that they are a major cause of our current housing and jobs shortage?

Just asking! :-)

So mum if we came out of Europe nobody could live in Europe to work?

NotAgainTrevor · 26/05/2014 21:47

On thing that does concern me about the ageing population and requiring young people to pay taxes for their care and pensions is at what point does it stop? Are we counting on large proportions of the young to return home, but what if they don't? Do we then have an even larger ageing population requiring even greater funding? This cannot carry on indefinitely, it is not sustainable, it's more like a pyramid scheme depending on greater numbers at the bottom. At some point we need to insure that pension liabilities etc are actually being funded during our working lives and not being left for the younger generation to pick up. But the nation is already in incredible debt. This is terrifying for the future.

Razzle from what I have read the brain drain of the bright young people from Eastern Europe is having a serious negative effect in those countries. They need those bright young people but they are leaving in droves.

I work in an inner London borough as an SEN teacher. 90+% of my caseload is children of first generation immigrants. They come here to get help for their children. I would rather children get what they deserve than be stuck in institutions. My own child is disabled. I read some of the UKIP comments with a sense of utter doom for what my child may face. If you voted UKIP you will not be able to understand how scary they seem to the rest of us.

ikeaismylocal · 26/05/2014 22:01

And how are kids from 5( which is when you'd need to start in order to be fluent)supposed to shoe horn learning 4 in ?

I would expect a child to be fluent in English ( and obviously Swedish!) English is often taught at nursery, many Swedish and international parents choose to sent their children to English language nurseries even in the home language is Swedish/dutch/Frenc. The Swedes tend to sound more American than English but I often can't tell if a Swede speaking English is American or Swedish.

I don't expect my children to be quadlingual ( possibly a made up word!) I expect them to know 2 additional languages but not to be passable as French/German/Chinese.

3 languages ( Swedish, English + another) is normal ( possibly compulsory) as my dc will already be bilingual and most probably educated at an English speaking school the 3rd language would be when Swedes are usually studying English and tge 4th would be in the place of the 3rd language option.

mumthetaxidriver · 26/05/2014 22:04

That's a fair point Retro - of course we don't know at this point but lets say the UK put restrictions on EU immigrants it would surely be expected that other EU countries would put similar limits on UK citizens.

"Immigrants must financially support themselves and their dependents for 5 years. This means private health insurance (except emergency medical care), private education and private housing - they should pay into the pot before they take out of it" This comes from the UKIP website.

So why should other countries continue to support our citizens if it is not reciprocated? As an example my DB and SIL have recently moved to Germany - they have two young children - they are both working and have bought a house and have a private medical care but there is no way they could afford private education. This opportunity for career progression would certainly be limited if they couldn't access local free education.

inabeautifulplace · 26/05/2014 22:06

"Nothing is going to happen to people already here." You mean apart from heightened levels of abuse and an overwhelming sense of not being welcome?

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 22:12

Razzle from what I have read the brain drain of the bright young people from Eastern Europe is having a serious negative effect in those countries. They need those bright young people but they are leaving in droves

YES but that brain drain will be made up by other people moving there. .

TucsonGirl · 26/05/2014 22:18

From where are the other brainy people going to move to Eastern Europe from?

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 22:20

Germany< sweden, france, spain....italy etc...

this is the whole bloody point of Schenectady, free movement.

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 22:21

they are already going to these places.

ikeaismylocal · 26/05/2014 22:21

It would be interesting to know if there is anti-European feelings in tge eastern European countries. I tried to read the results but it was all a bit too complicated for me.

mijas99 · 26/05/2014 22:56

Retropear - you do come across as rather dim

There are many wonderful opportunities in Europe which 2.2 million Brits (including myself) are making use of. If you don't speak anything but English then that is you fault - learn a language for Christ sake! I didn't learn anything at school but taught myself Spanish in my uni summer holidays, have now lived here for 7 years. You can't imagine how great it is, despite Spain having one of the greatest economic crashes ever

If you are uneducated and close minded then you will never have the chance to make the best out of Europe. A lot of the young 20 something's I met in Barcelona speak 4 languages as standard now. British kids won't be able to compete with this unless the British attitude changes

Retropear · 26/05/2014 22:58

And coming out of Europe would bring an end to those opportunities how exactly?

I'll ignore your rudeness.

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 23:01

It would be interesting to know if there is anti-European feelings in tge eastern European countries

Id be very interested to know how they feel about it too actually...

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 23:02

Retropear - you do come across as rather dim

Not very nice Mijass, I was thinking how nice this thread was with no name calling, no racism insults and so on....just normal nice debate on the issues which hopefully we can have more of on MN without the rabid frothy insults....Confused

Retropear · 26/05/2014 23:03

And considering that youth unemployment in Spain is now over 51% they'll need them I guess.

Retropear · 26/05/2014 23:04

Thanks RazzleSmile

caruthers · 26/05/2014 23:09

Retropear - you do come across as rather dim

You sound patronising and morally delinquent.

But that isn't the issue here is it?

The left explaining why the right is dim is where most of the anti-UKIP posters are coming from.......and that pie faced rhetoric just isn't working any more.

Retropear · 26/05/2014 23:11

Exactly Caruthers which is where I entered this thread in order to point it out.

The strategy clearly ain't working going by this weeks results.

inabeautifulplace · 26/05/2014 23:12

"And coming out of Europe would bring an end to those opportunities how exactly?"

For example, I have a medical condition which could make me unattractive as a long term immigrant. My skill set is also only in the second tier for Australian immigration.

Currently, I could work all over Europe. I would not want to lose that freedom.

Retropear · 26/05/2014 23:14

So where do you live and work, what do you do and how many languages do you speak?

Is the theory put into practise?

mijas99 · 26/05/2014 23:17

UKIP are pretty rude also. They play to one of British people's greatest weaknesses - xenophobia.

As for retropear's comments. It is clear that you think everyone wants to come to the UK but it simply isn't true. 4 million people immigrated to Spain between 1995-2010. That is way more than the UK received. Now that Spain is in hard times then why shouldn't their young people go abroad for experience? There are plenty of young British people doing the same here in Spain, teaching English mainly

inabeautifulplace · 26/05/2014 23:20

I live in the UK (where I was born) and work in management. I speak 3 other languages passably. My DP is polish, and we have considered moving there. Can't currently get a permanent Australian visa :(

caruthers · 26/05/2014 23:21

The figure quoted on here of 2.2 million Brits living and working in Europe should drive some sort of naive altruism from the voters at home?

That's just not how it works.

RazzleDazzleEm · 26/05/2014 23:21

I think its really important sometimes to think beyond ourselves and look at the bigger picture.
anyway good night, been nice to have a chat about ukip without the insults ( bar one).

Id be interested in some figures on migration to the former eastern block countries and how they are coping.....

and migration to them from where in the rest of europe.

id also be interested to know in how they feel and benefit from being in the eu.

whatever anyone thinks, lib dems are gone and ukip is on our polictical landscape..and will be for some time to come.
